Optimized page titles post penguin
-
Just a quick question to hear a few opinions on page titles in a post penguin/panda world.
For example, we are working on a large downloads portal that offers Addons for games called FSX and FS2004... Page titles are currently as follows:
Concorde for FSX - Civil Aircraft Downloads
British Airways Boeing 747 for FSX - Civil Aircraft Downloads
Quants Airbus A380 for FSX - Civil Aircraft DownloadsI thought it would be beneficial to remove the boilerplate "Civil Aircraft Downloads" to stop the template effect in the titles. Yay or nay? Good idea or bad idea? Other ideas?
Also, after removing that the titles would be as follows:
British Airways Boeing 747 for FSX
We still will have "for FSX" boiler plate text...is this okay? Perhaps we should remove the "for" and just have the title as "FSX Concorde" or "Concorde FSX" -what do you guys think?
Are there any other title suggestions you guys can recommend?
Your thoughts, tips and suggestions are very much appreciated.

Peter,
Are you saying that every product is an FSX Addon?
If so, then you are going to need to think this through and really get clear on Keyword research. Other keywords that get a ton of queries are FSX as a stand alone, FSX Simulator, etc. Also, FSX Download might be a clever one for those where there is a direct download as many who buy software do not wish to wait.
So, my thought is this: You could make it start with the FSX piece: FSX Download, FSX Missions, FSX Aircraft, FSX Addon PIPE the specific aircraft PIPE then your Brand Name.
So: FSX AddOn | Boeing 747 British Airways | Your Brand
I think this will help you and as long as your content is unique (so dont have 90% of FSX Addon on the page and 10% on the plane). There are ways to avoid duplicating the content by potentially using Categories then make the product the individual aircraft download. I would need to see more of the site and think it through to be clear on resolution.
Hope this bit helps, -
Lets say you wanted to rank for "blue cat" having your page set up like this:
URL: http://www.brand.com/blue-cat
Page Title:blue cat
H1:blue cat
body: blue cat
link on page: blue cat
This is considered over optimizing
Having your page set up like this:
URL: http://www.brand.com/blue-cat
Page Title:blue cat from the Brand
H1:Welcome to blue cat - where we painted our cat blue.
body: the blue cat has many friends and smells like paint. lorem ipsum etc. etc.
link on page: learn more about the blue cat
This is a page that uses diversity and still includes your main keyword phrase. This is how you protect your site prom the over optimizing.

This overall was a great question and removes a bit of anxiety I'd been having. However, Donnie I have a followup - can you please elaborate on not using the exact keyword? Do you mean like "cat" in the url, "cats" in the title, "felines" in the H1... ?
-
Thank you for your replies guys.
So from your comments, I'm under the impression that it's OK to use boilerplate text that is not the company/brand name in titles. I mean, if I was to use "FSX Addon Boeing 747" then we would have over 20,000 pages with "FSX Addon" at the start of the title tag...that's okay?
From research and reading, I was under the impression to steer away from templating in a post panda/penguin world...not just in page content but titles too.
Ler me know your thoughts!

I like to think from a users perspective. When you type something into Google many times you will click on the title that shows exactly or close to the exact thing you were looking for.
SEOmoz report card recommends that you place your keyword as close to the beginning of the title. However do not use exact keyword in your URL/title/H1/Body, use diversity.
-
SEO-wise: have your keyword in the first position in the title
Aside from that you want to encourage a high CTR with a title that describes the page and entices a click. If you have room for a brand name boiler plate, I like to add it. I only remove it if the title is too long and would get cut off in SERPs.
-
The first thing you should be looking at is what is the query? In other words what are the searched on Keywords for these items. Since FSX is an add on for flight simulation, what do people who are looking for it search for?
If they search for FSX addons and the type (Boeing 747) and your company is Super FSX Addons, I would follow the suggested convention of FSX Add on Boeing 747 | Super FSX Addons.
So, the keyword is first in the title tag, separated by a PIPE (straight up line) and then the Brand.
Be sure you take a look though and know what the important keywords are and don't just assume you know because you sell this all the time. You may be surprised,
Good luck.

How can another country domain appear in a page title?
I have run into something i have never seen before. A friend has a website with two country domains, so page titles for the homepages of both websites look like this: Rent your care here | carrentals.de Rent your car here | carrentals.co.uk The thing is, both are perfectly well set-up in Yoast. Yet when googling, the different URL's both appear like this: Rent your car here | carrentals.co.uk How could this happen?

Multiple pages optimised for the same keywords but pages are functionally different and visually different
Hi MOZ community! We're wondering what the implications would be on organic ranking by having 2 pages, which have quite different functionality were optimised for the same keywords. So, for example, one of the pages in question is
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | TrueluxGroup
https://www.whichledlight.com/categories/led-spotlights
and the other page is
https://www.whichledlight.com/t/led-spotlights both of these pages are basically geared towards the keyword led spotlights the first link essentially shows the options for led spotlights, the different kind of fittings available, and the second link is a product search / results page for all products that are spotlights. We're wondering what the implications of this could be, as we are currently looking to improve the ranking for the site particularly for this keyword. Is this even safe to do? Especially since we're at the bottom of the hill of climbing the ranking ladder of this keyword. Give us a shout if you want any more detail on this to answer more easily 🙂0 -
Google indexing only 1 page out of 2 similar pages made for different cities
We have created two category pages, in which we are showing products which could be delivered in separate cities. Both pages are related to cake delivery in that city. But out of these two category pages only 1 got indexed in google and other has not. Its been around 1 month but still only Bangalore category page got indexed. We have submitted sitemap and google is not giving any crawl error. We have also submitted for indexing from "Fetch as google" option in webmasters. www.winni.in/c/4/cakes (Indexed - Bangalore page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_blr_cakes.xml) 2. http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 (Not indexed - Hyderabad page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_hyd_cakes.xml) I tried searching for "hyderabad site:www.winni.in" in google but there also http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 this link is not coming, instead of this only www.winni.in/c/4/cakes is coming. Can anyone please let me know what could be the possible issue with this?

SEO mobile app optimization: multi tag link alternate media per every devices is acceptable in the desktop page?
Hi All, Hi hope someone could answer to this question because on internet I haven't found a clear solution so far: I have: 1 desktop website (let's make www.example.com) and different mobile websites for each main device (let's make iphone.example.mobi; android.example.mobi; winphone.example.mobi) In order to optimize my mobile websites, According to the Google guideline of the above separate urls configuration , I should add a tag link alternate media in the desktop page and a canonical tag in the corresponding mobile page in order to create a connection between them. But, I need to keep a 1-to-1 connection between desktop page and mobile page (Google recommends to have 1 desktop page linked to 1 mobile page and viceversa and discourages the 1-to-multi connections). What I would like: In my case, I have to add the a single desktop page of desktop site (example www.example.com/category1/), 3 links alternate media tag,( one for iphone.example.mobi, one for android.example.mobi and one for winphone.example.mobi). Furthemore, I have to add a canonical tag in every corresponding mobile page of the 3 mobile site version, a canonical tag pointing to my sektop page www.example.com/category1/. Now my worries are: having a single desktop page with 3 different link alternate tags pointing to 3 different mobile websites (one each), is something or not aligned to the google seo mobile guideline? If not, How should I configure my desktop website and my 3 mobile web applications(iphone, android, winphone) in order to follow the Google requirements for Separate urls apllication? Thanks, Massimliano

Duplicate page title at bottom of page - ok, or bad?
Can I get you experts opinion? A few years ago, we customized our pages to repeat the page title at the bottom of the page. So the page title is in the breadcrumbs at the top, and then it's also at the bottom of the page under all the contents. Here is a sample page: bit.ly/1pYyrUl I attached a screen shot and highlighted the second occurence of the page title. Am worried that this might be keyword stuffing, or over optimizing? Thoughts or advice on this? Thank you so much! ron ZH8xQX6

Page Authority Issue
My home page http://www.musicliveuk.com has a domain authority of 42 and page authority of 52. However I have set up other pages on the site to optimise for one keyword per page as I thought this was best practice. For example http://www.musicliveuk.com/home/wedding-bands targets 'wedding band' but this has a page authority of 24 way below my competitors. Having used the keyword difficulty tool on here it appears that is why I am struggling to rank highly (number 9). This is the same problem for several of my main keywords. I am building links to this and other pages in order to increase their authority and eventually rank highly but am I not better off optimising my home page that already has a good page authority and would probably out rank my competitors? Or am I missing something?

We are changing ?page= dynamic url's to /page/ static urls. Will this hurt the progress we have made with the pages using dynamic addresses?
Question about changing url from dynamic to static to improve SEO but concern about hurting progress made so far.
