Need advice on search listings and link building
-
Search results on my keyword (engraved wedding glasses) produces several pages of linked domains. (My domain is giftthings.net) Some are good. And admittedly, some are not so good. My question then is simply, why does seomoz link analysis show such a small number of links? And the second part of my question is, "Is there some sort of "magic number", some sort of thresh hold that triggers Google's interest? With a link list that is small but growing, am I missing something in my concern that I'm not moving up in the search listings? I've written a few articles, continuing my work on link building but I remain buried in the search results.

Ok. I'll get to work on it. Thanks again.

well... sorta...
your best bet is to move the blog over so it's on the same domain name as the store... that way, as you build useful content, if/when that content gets links, they're coming to the same root domain.
and i wouldn't really suggest making the blog the home page of the main URL. You need more content there, but that's not the solution.
either way, you definitely need to work on the content on your site. Do your keyword research, figure out what you're targeting, and optimize the site for your terms. Doesn't really matter that the business name doesn't have search volume, you'll be targeting terms that DO have volume.
and if your blog is all on the same domain, you can send all your traffic to the same root domain - instead of sending traffic to your blog, that's not necessarily going to continue over to your site.

I see what you're saying Greg. And I agree. Actually, I had thought about making the blog the home page already. My only concern is that that name "personally engraved gifts" has no search volume, no traffic.
So you're saying just focus on developing the blog? And do links to the store?

Could you please explain a little about organic (looking) link profiles. I really thought my anchor text should match my keywords.
-
Wow. Thanks everyone. Looks like I've been wasting a lot of time. Not giving up but I see I needed direction. Again, I appreciate the responses.

Hi Ben,
Just to clarify, our bot is not identical to Google. We don't crawl as many pages as Google does, and don't have the server farm that they do. We crawl in a similar manner, but we may see some links Google doesn't index/count, and Google certainly indexes and counts links we don't see.

Hi Ahmad,

I would go out on a limb and say OSE crawls just like Google, so if your links aren't counted in OSE they, are not being counted by Google.

"Is there some sort of "magic number"
No.
Watch this video, it is what you need to focus on to rank well!

I would definitely suggest working on your overall SEO strategy. A quick look at OSE shows that you only have 6 domains linking to you, and one of those is just a comment on a blog post that's not related to anything wedding. Also, other than the items on your site, your site has almost no content. You don't have the phrase "engraved wedding glasses" on your home page anywhere except the single text link... and on the page for "engraved wedding glasses" you have it in the title tag (good), at the end of your H1 (it'd be better if it were first), and a single time in the page text (which is only a few short sentences).
If your goal is to sell a ton of engraved wedding glasses, you need to create a lot more content on your site about engraved wedding glasses. If it's your biggest push, you should definitely optimize your home page for that term as well.
As far as links go, you'll need to work on getting more links, and if you're going to stick with the current strategy, those links should point to the "engraved wedding glasses" page instead of your home page.
I see you've got a blog - you might want to consider setting up your blog to be on your primary domain name - that way, any links you get will count towards your primary URL instead of a completely separate one. Also, you need to write some posts about "engraved wedding glasses" and why people need them (and why they should buy yours). Currently, your blog doesn't even have data in OSE, which leads me to guess that there aren't any quality inbound links there either. Linking from your blog to your site won't matter if the blog doesn't have any authority or relevance.

Hey Ahmad,
OSE (open site explorer) only shows links from the more reputable sites and does not show links from low quality sources another reason could simply be that Roger (the SEOMoz crawler bot) has not yet crawled sites with your links on.
You should attempt to build an organic (looking) link profile... If all your links are anchor text for "engraved wedding glasses" it looks unnatural and spammy.
There is no golden number of links that triggers googles algo, but don't build stupid amounts in one go, a few per day should be fine I'd say no more than 20 and ideally gradually increase more per day as your site authority grows.
If you are asking why your ranking has not increased... My answer would be due to the quality of your inbound links, most are from low quality forums, directories or low authority sites.
The quality of the inbound link matters greatly.

Redirects Advice Please
Hi All, I have been approached by someone to look at their website who has seen a rank drop over the last week of around 15 places. On a quick look at their website I have seen what I am imaging could be the culprit as I imagine it will be creating a re-direct loop. However, i am not 100% with these things so would like some others opinions.com They have a wordpress website. There home page lets say https://theirsite.com/ They have an internal page built for a search term https://www.theirsite.com/keyword In wordpress they have set that page in settings to be the homepage. However, I looked on their server and via htaccess they have a 301 redirect from https://www.theirsite.com/keyword to https://www.theirsite.com/ So the questions are: 1. Could this be creating a loop? 2. The redirect was placed around a week before the rank drop. Could this possibly be the cause of the drop? 3. I am assuming that removing the 301 from htaccess is recommended? Thanks in advance for any advice

Updating inbound links vs. 301 redirecting the page they link to
Hi everyone, I'm preparing myself for a website redesign and finding conflicting information about inbound links and 301 redirects. If I have a URL (we'll say website.com/website) that is linked to by outside sources, should I get those outside sources to update their links when I change the URL to website.com/webpage? Or is it just as effective from a link juice perspective to simply 301 redirect the old page to the new page? Are there any other implications to this choice that I may want to consider? Thanks!

Keyword links in footer
Hi - I am trying to help a site to get out from under a Google manual action penalty - down as "Partial Matches - Unnatural Links to site".
Technical SEO | | StevieD
I am checking through their links - the site that links most to them is a local directory style site - it has 2,682 links back into 1 page (Home) The directory site was built by the web co. that built my clients' site and they put a keyword link in the footer of the directory site - the keyword was "Buy Truffles". All my instincts say that is a bad thing! But - this is what is perplexing me - they are ranking no.1 for that keyword! Whereas they have lost rankings (i.e. not top 50) for all the other keywords they were targeting. So I don't get it! Can anyone explain why this is. I feel I should I get that link removed but don't want to take out their only ranking keyword! Webmaster shows about 55 different pages in the directory site have a link back to my client. Hope you can help.

Too many navigational links
Hi there, I have an issue with the amount of internal links on my webpages. Moz campaign manager gives a lot of 'too many on page links' issues. Over 7000.
Technical SEO | | MarcelMoz
I know the importance of a good internal linking structure. 1. Not too many internal links (over approximately 100) is good for flowing through some authority from authoritive pages.
2. Too many internal links can spend all of the 'crawler budget' so the crawlers won't crawl the complete website anymore (right?). This can cause problems with indexing new webpages (right?). This is the situation: The website is a webshop The header contains 6 links, the footer contains 32 links, the homepage contains 42 links, the body content of some category pages contains a variated amount of links from 30 to a maximum of 100 links. Product pages do contain a maximum of 25 links. There is no problem here. Now here's the problem: The website navigation is a dropdown menu that contains 167 links to tier 2. These links are very important for our visitors. They can immediately find the right category/product by it. Removing or shrinking this dropdown is not an option. But the dropdown navigation is causing all of the 'too many on page links' issues. Question: is there a SEO (indexing, PA) problem in this situation which i should solve? What should I solve and how should I solve this? Note: pages have good organic positions and authority. Thanks a lot. Marcel0 -
Is it something really obvious or is off-site link building all thats missing?
I'm trying to get a client ranked for the keyword Quaich and its like pulling teeth 😞 This keyword performs brilliantly for adwords but I've never got it ranked at all in googles SERPs. Last November I created this page: http://kiltmakers.co.uk/quaich Which ranks as A with seo-moz but still nothing. I'm still a newbie to SEO work but can someone point me in the right direction? Is it just the domain authority that the issue - should I switch my focus to link building off-site?

Canonicalization - Some advice needed :)
Hi guys, To be honest, it's a little bit embarrassing to throw out this question but it's one of the weakest points of knowledge at the moment for me. I've tried to get a grasp of canonical URLs and what it all means. From my understanding, it's informing Google which page to take into consideration when there's the possibility for duplicate content. Right? However, with the site I'm working on I'm not sure if it would be worth putting site-wide and the impact it would have. Site I'm working on - http://bit.ly/N7eew7 With the nature of the site, there would be a lot of duplicated content as there's the possibility that several properties listed could have a similar address due to being in the same building etc. From what I can see, no canonical URL was setup on the homepage. The other variations of the homepage URL are 301 redirecting to thee http:/www. version. Can someone explain it all to me in simple terms? Honestly believe that I'm getting more confused by the minute. Thanks guys for your patience 🙂

Link Juice
When we say "link juice", does it mean that a particular page has link juice ( due to backlinks pointing towards the page ) or each link on that page has link juice which it passes to the target page I suppose "link juice " is different from Pagerank ?
