How fast is too fast in building quality links?
-
So I'm working on a brand new project, and want to go after my competition rather aggressively. I have a long list of industry resources, including blogs, articles and directories, and several news/media/press release type sites that I could have link to me in a very short amount of time.
How fast is too fast? Is there a penalty for getting links too fast if they are all legit?

This is a very subjective situation I think. If you had an older, very large, well-established site, the rate at which links are acquired might have a history. As with anything, there are times when things might have peaks and valleys. For example, if you are Coca-Cola and you release a new product, you might see a huge jump in the number of inbound links as the news breaks, and then things will setlle back down to normal. Google understands that this type of thing is normal.
I'd take a look at the linking profiles, site-size and domain age of your competitors. Since your site sounds like it will be a brand new one, Barn-burning your way past your competitors in terms of inbound links in the first week is probably going to raise Googlebot's eyebrows a bit.
However, I have to (as always) throw in the caveat that no one, not me, nor anyone here, can predict what Google will or won't like, rank or penalize.
Look at the profiles of your competitors, if at most they are adding a link or two a day, then stay within that. But of course, ideally, the links are coming because you've built a better site than your competitors and people just are naturally wanting to link to you (I know, I know....in a perfect world....)
Trust your gut. If you are going agreesively after links and have to ask yourself "Is this too many too fast?"...then it probably is.

Drip Feeding Free Top 10 Blog Sites for Link Building?
Is it a good move to pick 10 free blogging sites to build links. Like drip feeding them. Let's say 10 blogging sites irrespective of its a sub-domain as we get in wordpress or a sub-folder blog as we get in livejournal. Now adding articles related to my money website on those blogs newly created & building links from them. Then drip feeding them by putting 1 article a month at regular intervals with anchor as links in each of them. Do you think its a good move?

I have read all the articles on moz and everything, but I need a personal touch on this matter. Thanks,

How does a competing website with clearly black hat style SEO tactics, have a far higher domain authority than our website that only uses legitimate link building tactics?
Through SEO Moz link analysis tools, we looked at a competing websites external followed links and discovered a large number of links going to Blog pages with domain authorities in the 90's (their blog page authorities were between 40 and 60), however the single blog post written by this website was exactly the same in every instance and had been posted in August 2011. Some of these blog sites had 160 or so links linking back to this competing website whose domain authority is 49 while ours is 28, their Moz Trust is 5.43 while ours is 5.18. An example of some of the blogs that link to the competing website are: http://advocacy.mit.edu/coulter/blog/?p=13 http://pest-control-termite-inspection.posterous.com/\ However many of these links are "no follow" and yet still show up on Open Site Explorer as some of this competing websites top linking pages. Admittedly, they have 584 linking root domains while we have only 35, but if most of them are the kind of websites posted above, we don't understand how Google is rewarding them with a higher domain authority. Our website is www.anteater.com.au Are these tactics now the only way to get ahead?

Links from Directories
We are currently listed in a number of Association Buyer's Guides. We signed up for these last year in an effort to increase our external links. With recent Panda changes, do these links carry any value for us? Here are some examples: http://buyersguideforeducators.com/ http://wasteindustrymarketplace.com/ http://wefbuyersguide.com/ We're in about 40-50 of these different directories. Thanks, Ben
