URL paramters and duplicate content
-
Hello,
I have a 2-fold question:
- Crawl Diagnostics is picking up a lot of Duplicate Page Title errors, and as far as I can tell, all of them are cause by URL parameters trailing the URL.
We use a Magento store, and all filtering attributes, categories, product pages etc are tagged on as URL parameters.
example:
Main URL:
/accessories.htmlDuplicated Title Page URLs:
/accessories.html?dir=asc&order=position
/accessories.html?mode=list
/accessories.html?mode=grid
...and many othersHow can I make the Crawl Diagnostics not identify these as errors?
- Now from an SEO point of view, all these URL parameters are been picked up by google, and are listed in WedMaster Tools -> URL parameters.
All URL parameters are set to "let google decide".
I remember having read that Google was smart enough here to make the right decision, and we shouldn't have to worry about it.
Is this true, or is there a larger issue at hand here?
Thankas!

I'm going to look into our canonical tags first - I think this is the best place to start.
Once this is done, I'll wait a week and see if the next scan yields fewer errors.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Hi yacpro13. We had a similar problem. We aren't on Magento, but definitely we had the same issue. For us it was a combination of several things. Make sure that your canonical tags are squared away In our case, we had a program running that was automatically writing canonical tags that matched these URLs with the URL parameters attached. Eventually we stopped using the parameters completely, but by then many of these pages had already been indexed (even though they weren't technically separate pages, Google saw them as such). No, Google definitely wasn't smart enough to decide. In our case, Google had sometimes indexed 4-5 versions of the same identical page, and of course we were getting dinged for having duplicate content.
Because we aren't using the parameters any more our solution was to ask Google to remove those URLs from the index. This is a painfully long process for a big site. We've already submitted over 500 remove requests and only about 1/2 have been completed. In your case, since it appears you are currently using parameters, this may not be the best solution. I would start with the canonical tags and investigate those and make sure they aren't part of the problem.
Good luck. Hope this helps a tiny bit.

How to deal with auto generated pages on our site that are considered thin content
Hi there, Wondering how to deal w/ about 300+ pages on our site that are autogenerated & considered thin content. Here is an example of those pages: https://app.cobalt.io/ninp0 The pages are auto generated when a new security researcher joins our team & then filled by each researcher with specifics about their personal experience. Additionally, there is a fair amount of dynamic content on these pages that updates with certain activities. These pages are also getting marked as not having a canonical tag on them, however, they are technically different pages just w/ very similar elements. I'm not sure I would want to put a canonical tag on them as some of them have a decent page authority & I think could be contributing to our overall SEO health. Any ideas on how I should deal w/ this group of similar but not identical pages?

Missing Meta Description in Pop Up Image Gallery URL
Hi there, Moz has reported that I have a lot of missing meta description in the Pop Up Image Gallery. There are over 150 of these that are missing. The issue is that in our CMS I cannot add meta description to images. I am also not entirely sure why the images I am loading up are generating their own URL like the one below. Possibly that is why Moz is saying it needs a meta description when it is only an image?. An example of the link that has missing meta description that I can't add would be something like this: http://www.domianhere.com/products/PopUpImageGallery/93/1?iframe=true When clicking these links it is purely an image with no text. So basically I am asking how do you add a meta description to a Pop Up image Gallery photo URL and/or possibly why would an image create a custom URL so I have to put in a Meta Description? Hopefully that makes sense, thank you in advance for your help - much appreciated!

Another site copied my content word for word. Whats the best way to handle or report this?
I work at CloudHashing and created a Bitcoin 101 and glossary for the site. - https://cloudhashing.com/bitcoin-101 The content was written by my team members and I, so it's all unique content. This site recently popped up and scraped all of our content - http://www.pacifichashing.com/bitcoin-class-101/ (It looks like they are located in Hong Kong- I'm not positive though) How will this affect us and will it benefit their site to copy our content? What's the best way to handle situations like this? Should I report this? If so, how? It sucks to see something my team and I worked really hard on to have it scraped by a competitor. Thanks in advance for any help! -Ryan

My crawl diagnostic is showing 2 duplicate content and titles.
First of all Hi - My name is Jason and I've just joined - How you all doing? My 1st question then: When I view where these errors are occurring it says www mydomain co uk and www mydomain co uk/index.html Isn't this the same page? I have looked into my root folder and only index.html exists.

"no urls with duplicate content to report"
Hi there, i am trying to clean up some duplicate content issues on a website. The crawl diagnostics says that one of the pages has 8 other URLS with the same content. When i click on the number "8" to see the pages with duplicate content, i get to a page that says "no urls with duplicate content to report". Why is this happening? How do i fix it?
