2 questions about linkbuilding
-
1. Are these types of sites bad to submit a link to?

2. If I submit my product for another blog to review (in turn they write a post for me with links to my website), is this GOOD?
Look forward to hearing back from you,
thanks

Yes, you can disregard my guest blogging comment. That will teach me to slow down when I read. As I mentioned later, seeking reviews is good, especially if you are using some criteria as you outlined. What I would try to do is gain links in other ways as well to help diversify the type of links you get.

If it's a high quality link you shouldn't need to worry. If you are paying for the review, I suggest being careful. Check out their link profile and see if it is really something you are interested in. I would be wary of any type of paid reviews/links.

"Are these types of sites bad to submit a link to? http://www.mompack.com/mom2mom/"
That looks like a catch all links directory to me. I would avoid it.
"If I submit my product for another blog to review (in turn they write a post for me with links to my website), is this GOOD?"
That's a good tactic to use, just make sure you target high quality blogs. I would let the blogger link to you however they see fit, to keep things looking natural.

It's fine, I misread your original post on that part actually. Fine to the extent that I don't think that should be your only focus in building links. A diverse link profile may serve you better than strictly links coming from review posts.

Thanks Owen. I've not too interested in guest blogging but rather interested in sending a product over to get it reviewed from quality blog writers in my niche. Some want money for this and some just want the product. I'm curious why this isn't good though as it "looks" like we're mentioned naturally in a beautifully written article. These sites that I'd like to send my products to are not spammy at all and have massive facebook followers and a fan base.

Thanks for your input. Why is it bad to submit my product for a review though? It informs potential customers about our product and yet provides a valuable backlink. All the reviews are quality written and unique in content.

Don't do either of those and start here instead:

Hi Christoper,
-
I tend to think about gaining links from sites that present a clear value to visitors, are active on social media (and have positive and engaged fans), and in general seem to know what they are doing. While I am not that familiar with this site, they seem like a directory and also are quite focused on links. Does that mean steer clear? Not necessarily, but I'd be cautious. If it were my choice I would avoid this type of site typically.
-
Guest blogging is ok, as long as its not excessive. A few here and there perhaps. Try not to be consistent in using that as your primary way of gaining links.
In both cases I'd stress that you think about creating content that people get excited about... giveaways, original concepts, viral media, are all common ways to boost your links over time and perhaps keep a more evenly distributed link profile.

De-indexing and SSL question
Few days ago Google indexed hundreds of my directories by mistake (error with plugins/host), my traffic dropped as a consequence. Anyway I fixed that and submitted a URL removal request. Now just waiting things to go back to normality. Meantime I was supposed to move my website to HTTPS this week. Question: Should I wait until this indexing error has been fixed or I may as well go ahead with the SSL move?

2 sites using 1 CMS... issues?
Hi, We are working with a client that has 2 sites in the same sector. They are currently on separate servers, with separate blogs, images galleries etc. Both sites rank combined for over 200 terms. IF we were to "combine" the sites on one CMS, with one IP, two separate front ends, one blog stream, one image gallery what do you think the SEO impact would be from this? We had an issue with another client whose sites were too close and we had to separate in order to get them both to rank. Further to this we want both sites to now have their own https certificate however this wouldn't be possible if combined. Interested to hear thoughts on this. Thanks

Sitemap all of a sudden only indexing 2 out of 5000+ pages
Any ideas why this happened? Our sitemap looks the same. Also, our total number of pages indexed has not decreased, just the sitemap. Could this eventually affect my pages being in the index?

Sitelink Demotion Question
A non profit in our industry that we support pro bono--the awesome Efficiency First--is finding that individual member listings are sometimes showing up within their sitelinks. This obviously does not sit well with the members who do not show up. I know that you can "demote" specific URL's within webmaster tools, but I'm wondering if it's possible to demote an entire section. Their structure is www.efficiencyfirst.org/member/member#. Do we demote the entire member section? Or is there a more structural problem at play here? Thanks much. 2IZuPkD.png

SEOMoz Crawler vs Googlebot Question
I read somewhere that SEOMoz’s crawler marks a page in its Crawl Diagnostics as duplicate content if it doesn’t have more than 5% unique content.(I can’t find that statistic anywhere on SEOMoz to confirm though). We are an eCommerce site, so many of our pages share the same sidebar, header, and footer links. The pages flagged by SEOMoz as duplicates have these same links, but they have unique URLs and category names. Because they’re not actual duplicates of each other, canonical tags aren’t the answer. Also because inventory might automatically come back in stock, we can’t use 301 redirects on these “duplicate” pages. It seems like it’s the sidebar, header, and footer links that are what’s causing these pages to be flagged as duplicates. Does the SEOMoz crawler mimic the way Googlebot works? Also, is Googlebot smart enough not to count the sidebar and header/footer links when looking for duplicate content?

Very Quick Joomla Question
Hi, A client's site was previously built in Joomla and he wants us to reproduce content that was in there, but the Joomla site is no longer live and has come to me as an archive containing all the files and folders that were included. So, I am looking at the files and folders without Joomla installed. Can someone tell me quickly how to find the where the actual page content was stored? I started looking, but there are some folders I cannot open and nothing that looks as I expected. Would appreciate a hint or two from someone who knows Joomla well.. Life is too short! Thanks Sha

WordPress Question: Canonical field in Category Section of Yoast SEO Plug In
I've added the Yoast SEO Plug In for my word press blog. When I add a new category, there is a listing called "Edit Category". On this page there is a listing "Yoast WordPress SEO Settings." In this section, there are two fields in which I need guidance on what is supposed to be included. One: There is a field called "Canonical". What info is supposed to be entered in this field and how does it need to be formatted? Is it a URL. If so, what URL is supposed to go there? Two: Breadcrumbs title. What is the purpose of this field? (Isn't it OK to just use the category name as the breadcrumb title?)
