Will Google penalize for backlinks on non-indexed pages?
-
Have a client who has a bunch of links from spammy sites that aren't even indexed by Google. Will Google penalize (i.e. Penguin) for backlinks from spammy sites that aren't indexed?
I'm guessing "Yes, Google still crawls non-indexed sites and may penalize the sites linked to from the banned site." Anyone have any data or experience with this?
Anyone have a non-indexed or banned site? Does Google still crawl it?

I would think that Google does still crawl these sites (or have just blacklisted them). Therefore, they would still have a negative effect on your client's website.
I would recommend taking a look into Google's new disavow tool - you will be able remove the association with bad links.
Dr Pete recently wrote a great article on the disavow tool - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/googles-disavow-tool-take-a-deep-breath

to be on the safe side, it is better to get rid of them

The links were built by another SEO firm. I'm working on getting rid of them, was just wondering what others new about links on de-indexed sites.

No Idea as such but the thing is you have bunch of spammy links from low quality sites that you have built, it is better get rid of them. Since there is some possibilities that Google may have crawled those sites earlier and when then deindexed them finding them spammy, risk is always involved.

MOZ indicates 404 page and 0 backlinks, after 301 redirect. The best redirect solution?
Dear MOZers, I have one concern i would like to ask you.. My website have valuable backlinks to the most important page which is awesome. But, some of those backlinks is old URL which is 301 redirected to the URL I use today. As far as i know 301 redirects pass page rank, so it should be alright. (?) Link i use today: domain.com/awesome-url/ My backlink: domain.com/old-boring-url/ 301 redirected to domain.com/awesome-url/ What bothers me is that in MOZ report (Link opportunities) MOZ indicates my important URL (domain.com/old-boring-url/) return 404. But, it is not true. It is 301 redirected to domain.com/awesome-url/ and it works! I am worried i am losing important link juice here(!?) Also, my On Page Grader tool for domain.com/awesome-url/ reports 0 backlinks. And that is not true! I know exactly which websites are linking back, only problem is that those website are using old URL (domain.com/old-boring-url/) to link back to my website. Am i doing something wrong? Is there a better way to redirect and save valuable link juice for my page? Thank you very much! PS The URL was changed in March 2015.

Backlinks and Domain Authority
Hi there, I have a question on backlinks. I have seen conflicting stories about it, and hoping someone with a vast amount of experience will be able to help me (If you could please be so kind). Now I understand the difference between 'no-follow' links and 'follow' links. I have accumulated quite a few 'no-follow' links through things like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter etc. I understand that they won't feed my site authority or trust; or anything of that sort (I do work on content too, and have gotten a few follow links, don't worry). Now I have seen conflicting answers to the actual importance of them. Some things I have read are saying that SEs completely ignore them (NFL), and they don't even consider them a 'link', but rather a user tool to further the experience of the reader on your site. Which is fair enough, but then people are turning around and also saying that Google relies heavily on them, and they only make up 5% of the internet or something. I have even read something saying they are the only ones worth getting (I know that is bs, but they must have a reason behind this thought?). If someone could enlighten me as to a 'ideal' ratio, and also any little known authoritative sites I could look at submitting content to. I am in the plumbing business, and doing my own sites, so I'm no expert. Also, what are the importance of comment links? I don't go for them, but don't know if I should? Sorry for the mouthful, but I would really appreciate help on this matter. Kindest regards, Kyle The Plumber Bro's The Electrician Bro's

PR1 and PR2 backlinks
We're doing some content marketing. I've heard that it is a good idea to target even PR1 and PR2 sites (small DA sites). I'm concerned about these sites disappearing after a few months, as we've found that losing a backlink can sting a bit and be worse than never having it. Though this isn't as big a deal any more. Anyways, can somebody say when a PR1/PR2 backlink would be appropriate to go after? Some of them would be easy and if it's appropriate I'd like to include them. So far they would only pass our standards if they are Above PR0 Look like a white hat, quality site from the outside Have a clean backlink profile Look like they're going to stick around Successful Social Media Accounts a plus What are you guys' criteria for including these sites? Do you gain value from them?

Best way to get over the Hump (from page 2 to page 1)
Hello, I've recently been able to bring my site way up in the rankings for some very competitive keywords. I've done nothing spammy, and everything has been done with a lot of detail and a focus on only using the best techniques. My site is on page 2 for a lot of keywords. What would be your suggestions for getting over that hump and making it to page 1? I'm happy with my results (coming from pages 30-50 to page 2 over a couple of months) but I'm not satisfied and won't be until I can be on the top of page 1... Any suggestions are welcome... Thanks

Penguin and Backlinks
I have been looking closely at my backlinks. I readily admin that I have not worked on backlinks in years since for e-commerce there is little white hat opportunity but here is what I find in doing a detailed analysis. I mostly have back links that are pointing to our nicely ranked site (well it use to be pre-penguin) being hyjacked by crappy sites that just put us on the their site in order to try and rank. I have no way to prevent this. They are like a cancer. Point me to the Doctor. Is Goggle penalizing us for these guys listing us in long pages list to create pages that obviously exist for one reason...... To display Adword Ads....isn't that a twist that simply sucks for use but has Google making money either way. If they want to penalize us for them stealing our link then we should get a say in accepting the link. Advice on dealing with this? Do I have to hire someone to create enough good links to overcome this trash that I have no control over ? Perhaps my competitors are doing this. I simply can't tell. Any advice is appriciated.

Multiple pages battling for same keyword
Hi, I have earlier had a post about this, but still I am in doubt. I posted: http://www.seomoz.org/q/page-not-being-indexed The keyword "betsafe" in that question has now "bounced" back and is now the page shown in SERPS for the search keyword. This is great, however I don't know why. By checking the URL in OSE i have discovered that the page has in-links from SEOmoz.org. Which comes from the above questions thread. Can it really be, that these 2 links from SEOmoz forum has done the difference? We appareantly have zero links from other sites to the URL, despite actually having them on another site. Now we are having trouble with keyword: "bet365" which should show page http://www.betxpert.com/bookmakere/bet365 but does not (on google.dk). I have optimized the page as far as I can stretch it without doing in in an unnatural way. Only thing left to do is bring down number of links. What is your advice? Should I simply try to link build for the URL with the keyword - and then it will beat our other pages which seem to steal the SERPS? -Rasmus

Starting My First Backlink Campaign
Hi Team, I've started my first campaign and would like some advice on building backlinks. I have got the no. 1 competitor's backlinks through OSE. Here is the first backlink URL as mentioned in OSE. for them: www.uofaemergency.org/ (DA: 45 PA:44) However the backlink appears on another page of that domain, not on the homepage as it says in OSE. That backlinking page as a PA of just 1. Do I go for the homepage or the page on which the competitor's backlink appears? It is an unrelated site to the niche and the content in which the link appears is nonsensical. Does this matter as far as link juice is concerned? Is this a good site or page to get a link from? How do I go about getting an in content anchor text link from this site? What's the required process? I would like to start buidling good links asap and start to get rankings for my site. Thanks. Sunil.
