Poor Google.co.uk ranking for a UK based .net, but great Google.com
-
I run an extremely popular news & community website at http://www.onedirection.net, but we're having a few ranking issues in Google.co.uk.
The site gets most of its traffic from the USA which isnt a bad thing - but for our key term "one direction", we currently don't rank at all on Google.co.uk.
The site is located on a server based in Manchester, UK, and we used to rank very well earlier this year - fluttering about in position 5-7 most of the time.
However earlier this year, around July, we started to fall down to page 2 or 3, and at the start of this month we don't rank at all for "one direction" on Google.co.uk. On Google.com however we're very strong, always on page one.
We're definitely indexed on .co.uk, just not for main search term - which I find a bit frustrating.
All the content on our site is unique, and we write 2-4 stories every day. We have an active forum too, so a lot of our content is user-generated. We've never had any "unnatural link building" messages in Webmaster Tools, and our link profile looks fine to me.
Do we just need more .co.uk links, or are we being penalised for something? (I can't imagine what though). It certainly seems that way though.
Another site, "www.onedirection.co.uk" which is never updated and has a blatant ad for something completely unrelated on its homepage, ranks above us at the moment- which I find quite frankly appalling as our site is pretty much regarded as the worlds most popular One Direction news and fan site.
We've spent the last few months improving the page-load times of our site, and we've reduced any unneccesary internal linking on the site. Approx 2 months ago we launched a new forum on the site, 301'ing all the old forum links to the new one, so that could have had an impact on rankings - but we'd expect to see an impact on Google.com as well if this was an issue.
We definitely feel that we should be ranking higher on Google.co.uk.
Does anyone have any ideas what the iproblems could be?
Cheers,
Chris.

"the US rankings are still very strong, so for any Penguin penalisation wouldnt it be applied equally across all indexes?"
I'm not sure - I think the updates are usually language based as Google phrases it along the lines of "1% of English language queries will be affected" - but tapshop321 is UK-based so who knows...
"With the explosion of the band, again if this was a a major factor, wouldnt we have dropped equally on Google.com ?"
It's just a hunch but I'd say no, perhaps based on the above, quality of links from either country and potentially hundreds of other factors.
If I was you I'd write occasional guest articles, with a link back to onedirection.net, for other related UK websites - fansites or official sites of similar bands perhaps. I wouldn't bother too much with getting exact match anchor text - if you use your URL you have the match anyway and you don't want your link profile to be too heavily waited towards one phrase, just in case (even though you should naturally get 'one direction' matches). Mix it up a bit if you go ahead, with URL links and phrases like 'one direction fansite'. Even just a mention of One Direction in these articles could help.
Have you interviewed One Direction or similar UK bands? If you could, they're likely to link to the interview on your site.
If you haven't already, perhaps setting up Google+ Authorship would help too.

With SEO, you can never be certain. Since I don't have firsthand experience in it, I can't promise anything and neither can anyone else who doesn't(have firsthand experience). However, it never hurts to try. It's all about giving google the correct signals and hoping it picks up on them and it is what it's looking for.

I'll take a look at Ahrefs - never used it before, thanks.
Press release might be a good idea. So looking at everything as a whole, the main issue just might be the percentage of .com links compared to .co.uk links?

We did have a drop in traffic in April from Penguin, but the US rankings are still very strong, so for any Penguin penalisation wouldnt it be applied equally across all indexes? Ah, well spotted on that site - we'll get that link removed straight away - in fact I thought that was already gone.
With the explosion of the band, again if this was a a major factor, wouldnt we have dropped equally on Google.com ?
Thanks for your help.

I personally prefer Ahrefs due to the more frequently updated and larger sized index, plus the interface and graphs are great.
If they have only dropped on google.co.uk, while I don't have personal experience with it and it's just theoretical hear-say and common sense, google has been moving in a direction to personalize search results even more, in which case it might be explained by your small percentage of backlinks from UK websites. (https://ahrefs.com/site-explorer/overview/subdomains/onedirection.net)
You can do a press release targeted to UK, and see if that makes any difference. Make the Press Release LSI related to one direction, UK, and have your website mentioned in there, preferably in a link and in a sentence containing UK.
-
That could be an issue. Was it targeted to the UK before?
Looking further into it, the Penguin updates throughout the year (the first in April) don't match directly with the timing of drops you mentioned, but some of your "one direction" exact match anchor text links could have been devalued. The site-wide footer link here for example, on a completely unrelated website (that's a big no-no in Google's eyes): http://www.tapshop321.com/blog/
How about the explosion in popularity of the band? Your Domain and Page Authority is lower than most of the results on the first 3 pages. This is worldwide but illustrates the point - there will be a lot more competition from other sites now: http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=one%20direction&cmpt=q

Hi Bernita,
Rankings for other keywords have also dropped too, only on Google.co.uk though.
Did you look at this in OpenSite Explorer? We did remove a number of site-wide links that we thought might be causing a problem, and these were taken off about 3 months ago.
Wouldn't this also effect Google.com rankings though? This is what is confusing us.
-
Hi Alex,
Yes the site is registered on Webmaster Tools, and no it doesnt have any geo-targeting set. We did experiment with this a few months back, but it has been reset to nothing for the last 2 months.
We definitely don't want to lose US traffic.
Chris.

Did your rankings just start falling for "one direction" or related keywords as well?
I've noticed recently that google has started "penalizing" websites for specific keywords only, leaving the remaining keywords untouched.
I took a quick peek and your backlinks for "one direction" at a domain level are higher than "onedirection.net". I'd try and fix that by getting the anchors changed or building new links.
-
Is the site registered with Google Webmaster Tools? If so, is it geo-targeted to a particular country? Do you have links from other UK sites? Do you have a physical UK address you could list as a contact on the site?
Be aware you might lose some US traffic if you do decide to change/set a location, though you can still target a particular country and rank well in others.

Geotargeting in Webmaster Tools - Is there an expected ranking benefit in the geotargeted region ?
Hi Is there an expected ranking benefit from geotargeting regional focused subfolders or domain mapped TLDs' in the target countries ? Or does it just prevent these pages from showing up in other regions search results ? For example i have a client with a main .com site targeting english worldwide generally, then a /tr subfolder in turkish to target Turkey. Then another subfolder /de targeting german in germany (but the de has also been domain mapped to .de top level domain too). Im leaving the main .com site non geotargeted since its job is to achieve english language results wherever possible and wandering whether to geotarget the turkish subfolder & german tld The Turkish regional subfolder & the German tld are achieving some ranking results already in their target countries googles, but also getting traffic from other countries too (which im happy to get, dont really want to stop this traffic unless there really is a local region ranking benefit for the main target country by gwt geotargeting). So should I use GWT international targeting tool or not ? Since the tld site is clearly on a german domain with german language pages and the Turkish subfolder /tr site is in Turkish the i presume Googles got no probs working this out which is demonstrated by the regional & language ranking results So I presume if achieving results in target countries already then no real need to set international taregt in GWT especially if it may stop traffic from other regions too. BUT if its likely to improve those rankings further in the main target countries googles significantly then i would happily cut off or reduce the other region traffic in favour of higher rankings and hence targeted traffic from the main target country .All Best Dan

Google suggesting a translation
Hi everybody, I notice since some months that Google when used for german language results proposes a translation next to the listing of one of my websites. When searching for english results (hl=en) it does not propose a translation! My website is clearly in german (given as target in GWMT and by meta tag). Other pages on the same domain are not treated this way by Google. No translation is proposed for all subpages of this website. Obviously, Google considers the homepage of this website english instead of german. Any fix for that? It is a *.org Wolfgang

How well does Google's crawlers understand foreign websites?
I speak 5 languages and therefore have the opportunity to do on-page SEO and content writing for 5 different cultures. This question to me has much to do with the way Google translator works. It doesn't, trust me! Which then makes me wonder how the web crawlers, which are designed with English in mind, can fairly and equally attribute the same ranking points to a foreign website. Since Google seems to use sematic search technology I'm wondering if foreign sites have it easier or not. Any ideas?

Use country-specific domains or stick to already strong .com domain?
We run an online store with the majority of our customers coming from 4 different European countries. The site is accessible through TLD's of all of these countries. However our .com domain currently has the most links pointing to it and the highest domain authority. Unfortunately, we are unable to tell through which TLD visitors reach our site. The niche is rather competetive, and therefore I am unsure whether it would be worth it to solely use our .com domain for the English language, and try to rank for each of the seperate languages with its own country-specific domain. **Question/discussion: **Will it be worth the costs and time to spent to build links for the country specific domains in these countries, or should we focus on making our .com domain stronger and use it for all countries? I'm aware of the benefits of ranking with a domain in the country the user is in. Note: We have major duplicate content issues at this moment, due the content being available in different languages, on a handful of domains. On each domain, users can view the site in different languages. In addition, the language indication in the url is not very clear (?lang=x) so I believe this should be improved to make it easier for search engines to tell which language is presented. If I choose to use a different language for each TLD, then the language flag in the navigation on the site will point to a different domain, so each language is hosted on 1 domain and there is no more duplicate content. However, I'm afraid this will lead to lower rankings, as the (strong) .com domain will no longer host the content in different languages.

Backlinks that we didnt place, killing our SERP rank and PR
I am in need of advice regarding back links that we did not place, and which are hurting our search engine results. How and why they got there I cannot explain. But they have appeared recently, and are damaging our SERP ranks. For several years, I have been a member with SEOmoz, and we have done our search engine optimization in house. I am the owner of a personal injury law firm, which is a competitive field in search engine optimization. Recently, in the spring, we updated our website, added significant content (over 100 additional pages), we set up a better site structure, and we completed a significant back link campaign from white hat sources. As a result, we were the strongest law firm in search engine results in the state of Arizona, and the page rank from our home page went from a 4 to 6, and from our next highest level of pages, they went from a 3 to 6. This happened in 10 week period. Our search engine results were fantastic. We were getting a significant amount of business from out Places page and our Organic results. That has almost completely dried up. Approximately 6-8 weeks later, we started having some serious problems. Specifically, our search engine results decreased significantly, our page rank reduced from a six to a four. So we started using SEOmoz tools to see what the problem was, and when we created an open site Explorer report, there are approximately 1000 different links from very shady websites they are now linking to our home page. Some of these linking URLs prompt a download to video and other files. Other of the linking are simple on junk sites. Obviously, some other person placed these links. First and foremost I am interested in maintaining the integrity of our site, and if there were a way to remove these links, and protect against that in the future, that is what I want. Secondly, if there were a way to find out who did this, I would like to know that also. What options and/or actions should be taken. I am thinking that I may need to employ a professional/consultant. Will I have to transfer content to another domain? Your thought and help are appreciated. Thanks,

Does publishing your physical company address increase your Google Trust?
The question is in the title: Does publishing your physical company address increase your Google Trust? I.e. on the contact page of the website, providing a physical address. The address would match the WHOIS entry for the domain, and allow customers to contact you via post.
