How to format a video sitemap for GWT using Vimeo iframe code
-
I noticed a thread on this forum about using the old embedd code from vimeo for videos, although I can't see this option in Vimeo in 2013.
My Question is I have Iframe embedded videos from vimeo,
How do I format a google video site map accordingly?
or do I need a custom media player instead?

Using the tool I have this.. Ive submitted the following to GWT but have errors saying it's an invalid URL..
<url><loc>www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk</loc></url>video:thumbnail_lochttp://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/videos/home.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc>video:titleAbout The Furniture Market</video:title>video:descriptionA video all about The Furniture Market a Multi Award Winning Company, based in Kelsall, Cheshire, UK.</video:description>video:content_loc"http://player.vimeo.com/external/56085518.hd.mp4?s=4d34a69f32af0d61e3c19212bdd67a81</video:content_loc>video:duration92</video:duration>video:publication_date2012-12-21</video:publication_date>video:family_friendlyyes</video:family_friendly>video:tagFurniture</video:tag>video:tagFurniture</video:tag>video:tagFurniture</video:tag><video:uploader info="http://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/">The Furniture Market</video:uploader>video:liveno</video:live>
I tried with http: had the same error message
I am using the new vimeo iframe embed code.
any ideas? I read your forum thread but couldn't see any answers.
-
No. Just the iframe will be fine, as long as you have set up the video sitemap properly.
-
For the new Vimeo videos in a pro account, do I need to add the <embed> mark up to the page the video is on?
-
I've detailed the exact process for vimeo fairly explicitly in this post http://www.distilled.net/blog/video/creating-video-sitemaps-for-each-video-hosting-platform/
You need to find the Thumbnail and player details, then you can use the Googledoc
-
yeah we paid the $199 its a no brainer.
these videos come from vimeo and are on the pro platform
this video here http://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/about.asp
If we can get away with it how do I format the sitemap using Distilled google doc here..

Vimeo Pro is not the same as vimeo. It's a cheap hosting platform, where vimeo is a video community website. The key regarding "keeping SEO benefit" is whether or not it's also visible on vimeo.com. If you have Vimeo PRO, then you can make it only visible on your site.
Whether it's hosted on a branded cname subdomain or not actually makes no difference at all.
iFrame isn't that bad, it just doesn't get indexed as easily as flash by Google. I've seen them get better at this recently though.
-
I am confused now.
I thought if you had a subdomain
** videos.mysite.com**
This will have more authority than if you have videos linking out to vimeo etc..
I also don't understand why i frame is so bad.
-
Makes no difference from an SEO perspective, so i suggest making the decision based on other factors such as resource and budget.
The key with SEO is to make your page look like the canonical, either by enabling domain restrictions on third party platforms, or hosting it yourself. It's pretty cheap to set up a cloudfront server or similar.
If you want to make things as simple and as easy as possible, Wistia have the best autogenerated video sitemap system available.
-
Wouldn't we just be better off hosting these on our server with a nice custom media player?
We have our own server my only slight concern is bandwidth issues.
Ideally Phil would this be your recommendation?
-
You're right about the first bit, but not about the second.
I assume you have a Vimeo Pro account? if so, you can enable domain restrictions once you "disable community pass".
Use the iframe embed, but reference the flash file (located within the old embed code) as the player_loc tag. in your video sitemap
-
I may be wrong here but the old embed code uses a kind of flash player so our lovely iPad customers would miss out.
Am I right?
Also to enable the old embed code it makes the video embeddable on any website, and we don't want that.
-
You want this article http://www.distilled.net/blog/video/creating-video-sitemaps-for-each-video-hosting-platform/
Which explains your problem in detail.
Also, the old embed code is still there, it's just that it's harder to find.
-
So use this embedd code in that doc and generate an output?
Will it matter the video is not hosted on our own server?
-
Have you tried the Distilled Video Sitemap generator?
I think this is the Google doc for it: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhK1-u_-nIZhdE5KdEFTYVJCN3M4Yk9Xb2pfY0hrQkE#gid=0

Sites in multiple countries using same content question
Hey Moz, I am looking to target international audiences. But I may have duplicate content. For example, I have article 123 on each domain listed below. Will each content rank separately (in US and UK and Canada) because of the domain? The idea is to rank well in several different countries. But should I never have an article duplicated? Should we start from ground up creating articles per country? Some articles may apply to both! I guess this whole duplicate content thing is quite confusing to me. I understand that I can submit to GWT and do geographic location and add rel=alternate tag but will that allow all of them to rank separately? www.example.com www.example.co.uk www.example.ca Please help and thanks so much! Is Using a Question, Answer Format Appropriate for a Blog? Is a 300 Word Micro Blog An SEO Plus?
My PR agency has suggested a question answer format be incorporated in my blog. They suggest a microblog with a single sentence question and an answer of about 300 words. My blog currently has about 35 posts. I would like to ramp up blog entries to about one or two per week of these "mini blog" posts. The format of the new blog begins as a question with the responses being paragraphs that do not use headings. My concerns are as follows: 1. No headings in an answer of 300 words will fail to provide Google with context regarding the content's meaning. Everything I have read about SEO suggests text be broken up in short sections and that it be divided by headings (preferably H2s). I very much like my agency's concept for a question answer format blog. It provides very practical info for visitors. How can I use it in a manner that supports SEO best practices? 2. According to a reputable SEO firm that has been assisting me, Google does not consider a blog post of less than 600 words to be superior quality. They told me that blog posts of 300 words, from an SEO purpose will not be a great helpful, that the content will not be rich enough to generate incoming links. Is this really the case? What if this abbreviated content is very well written and engaging? If so, is 300 words sufficient? From the visitor's perspective I am not sure they would have the patience to read 600 words when 300 words is more than than enough to answer these basic questions. From a PR perspective I think the shorter content in a question answer format is superior at least for my line of business (commercial real estate brokerage). 3. If 500-600 words is the minimum word count, and headings are necessary, what is the best way to execute a question and answer blog format? The purpose of this blog is to provide very useful info to my visitors while generating incoming links to that will boast my rankings. Thanks in advance for your feedback!!! Alan

Add URL parameters in SEOMoz as per GWT?
Hi, this may be a tall order, or maybe it's already in place and I'm behind the times! Any chance on getting something like this going? Even handier, have SEOMoz import these settings directly from GWT. The issue comes into play when looking at my duplicate page content reports; I'm guessing that SEOMoz will continue showing these as duplicates even after I have tweaked GWT to read them properly. Haven't tested this theory as I just started down this road on GWT myself. Thanks. 🙂

Software to add subtitles to videos?
Hi, I work for a site that focuses on providing health information through videos. We would like to add French subtitles (because we're in Canada) so I'm looking into software that would allow us to add them to our videos. I have no experience with this sort of thing, so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on the best type of software to use? Thanks! E

How long is it safe to use a 302 redirect?
Hi All, Lets assume there is site A and site B, both sites are live on the internet today as standalone businesses, but they sell very similar products. Site B has built up some link equity and will eventually become the domain for site A due to an organisational re-brand. For the time being however site A will remain, but site B needs to disappear temporarily, but not lose the link equity which has been built up against it. My current thinking is to 302 redirect site B to site A such that users and search bots accessing site B will be redirected to site A whilst leaving the link equity that exists against site B fully intact and allowing us to continue to grow it should we wish to. The question is, does anybody have a view on how long it is safe to use a 302 temporary redirect for? i.e., is 8-10 months to long. Thanks, Ben
