How to format a video sitemap for GWT using Vimeo iframe code
-
I noticed a thread on this forum about using the old embedd code from vimeo for videos, although I can't see this option in Vimeo in 2013.
My Question is I have Iframe embedded videos from vimeo,
How do I format a google video site map accordingly?
or do I need a custom media player instead?

Using the tool I have this.. Ive submitted the following to GWT but have errors saying it's an invalid URL..
<url><loc>www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk</loc></url>video:thumbnail_lochttp://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/videos/home.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc>video:titleAbout The Furniture Market</video:title>video:descriptionA video all about The Furniture Market a Multi Award Winning Company, based in Kelsall, Cheshire, UK.</video:description>video:content_loc"http://player.vimeo.com/external/56085518.hd.mp4?s=4d34a69f32af0d61e3c19212bdd67a81</video:content_loc>video:duration92</video:duration>video:publication_date2012-12-21</video:publication_date>video:family_friendlyyes</video:family_friendly>video:tagFurniture</video:tag>video:tagFurniture</video:tag>video:tagFurniture</video:tag><video:uploader info="http://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/">The Furniture Market</video:uploader>video:liveno</video:live>
I tried with http: had the same error message
I am using the new vimeo iframe embed code.
any ideas? I read your forum thread but couldn't see any answers.
-
No. Just the iframe will be fine, as long as you have set up the video sitemap properly.
-
For the new Vimeo videos in a pro account, do I need to add the <embed> mark up to the page the video is on?
-
I've detailed the exact process for vimeo fairly explicitly in this post http://www.distilled.net/blog/video/creating-video-sitemaps-for-each-video-hosting-platform/
You need to find the Thumbnail and player details, then you can use the Googledoc
-
yeah we paid the $199 its a no brainer.
these videos come from vimeo and are on the pro platform
this video here http://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/about.asp
If we can get away with it how do I format the sitemap using Distilled google doc here..

Vimeo Pro is not the same as vimeo. It's a cheap hosting platform, where vimeo is a video community website. The key regarding "keeping SEO benefit" is whether or not it's also visible on vimeo.com. If you have Vimeo PRO, then you can make it only visible on your site.
Whether it's hosted on a branded cname subdomain or not actually makes no difference at all.
iFrame isn't that bad, it just doesn't get indexed as easily as flash by Google. I've seen them get better at this recently though.
-
I am confused now.
I thought if you had a subdomain
** videos.mysite.com**
This will have more authority than if you have videos linking out to vimeo etc..
I also don't understand why i frame is so bad.
-
Makes no difference from an SEO perspective, so i suggest making the decision based on other factors such as resource and budget.
The key with SEO is to make your page look like the canonical, either by enabling domain restrictions on third party platforms, or hosting it yourself. It's pretty cheap to set up a cloudfront server or similar.
If you want to make things as simple and as easy as possible, Wistia have the best autogenerated video sitemap system available.
-
Wouldn't we just be better off hosting these on our server with a nice custom media player?
We have our own server my only slight concern is bandwidth issues.
Ideally Phil would this be your recommendation?
-
You're right about the first bit, but not about the second.
I assume you have a Vimeo Pro account? if so, you can enable domain restrictions once you "disable community pass".
Use the iframe embed, but reference the flash file (located within the old embed code) as the player_loc tag. in your video sitemap
-
I may be wrong here but the old embed code uses a kind of flash player so our lovely iPad customers would miss out.
Am I right?
Also to enable the old embed code it makes the video embeddable on any website, and we don't want that.
-
You want this article http://www.distilled.net/blog/video/creating-video-sitemaps-for-each-video-hosting-platform/
Which explains your problem in detail.
Also, the old embed code is still there, it's just that it's harder to find.
-
So use this embedd code in that doc and generate an output?
Will it matter the video is not hosted on our own server?
-
Have you tried the Distilled Video Sitemap generator?
I think this is the Google doc for it: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhK1-u_-nIZhdE5KdEFTYVJCN3M4Yk9Xb2pfY0hrQkE#gid=0

How can I use AMP html on a CMS
I have been trying to research using AMP to improve our mobile speed. We have a whole lot of sites on the same platform managed by a CMS. From what I have read, AMP html can only be used on static pages. Does that mean we would not be able to incorporate this into the html through our CMS? I would like to implement this across all our homepages to test the effectiveness of it if possible, but there is no way to rebuild all our homepages statically. Any advice is much appreciated!

Sitemap Indexation
When we use HTML sitemap. Many a times i have seen that the sitemap itself gets mapped to keywords which it shouldn't have got to. So should we keep the HTML sitemap as No-Index, Follow or does anyone has a better solution that the sitemap doesn't show-up for other keyword terms that actually isn't representing this page.

XML Sitemaps settings for simple websites
We have numerous simple websites that are not updated very often (maybe once every 12-18 months). We are trying to create the perfect XML sitemap for them. Which brings me to my 2 questions:- 1. Should we include the "lastmod" tag in the XML sitemap? 2. What would you set the "changefreq" at? Once a month? Remember these sites are never updated as they are simple sites for industry sectors such as building and property maintenance. Please justify your answer and explain why as we are trying to understand.

Should I use individual product pages for different formats of the same product?
Hi All -- I'm working with a publishing client who is launching a new site. They have a large product catalogue offered in a number of format types (print, ebook, online learning, packages) with each one possessing a unique ISBN code. From past experience, I know that ISBN codes can be a really important ranking factor. We are currently trying to sort out product page guidelines. The proposed methods are: A single product page for all formats. The user then has the option to select which format they wish to purchase. The page would contain all key descriptors for each format, including: individual ISBN, format, title, price, author, etc. We would then use schema mark-up just to assist search engines with understanding and crawling. BUT we worry that the single page won't rank as well as say an invidual product page with a unique ISBN in the URL (for example: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470573325.html) Which leads to the next option... Individual URLs for each format. We understand that most e-commerce guidelines state you shouldn't dilute link equity amongst multiple pages with very similar products and descriptions. BUT we want searchers to be able to search by individual ISBN and still find that specific format within the SERPs. This seems to rule out canonicalizing, because we don't prefer one format over the other and still want say the ebook to show up as much as the print version. If anyone has any other options or considerations that we haven't thought about, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, U

Unnatural Inbound Links Warning in GWT
Hi all, A bit of a long questions so apologies in advance but please bear with me... My client has received an 'Unnatural Inbound Links' warning and it is now my task to try and resolve through a process of; Highlighting the unnatural links Requesting that the links be removed (via webmaster requests) Possibly using the Disavow Tool Submitting a Reconsideration Request So I downloaded my clients link profile from both OSE and GWT in CSV format and compared - the amount of links returned was considerably more in GWT than it was in OSE...? So I set about going through the links, first filtering into order so that I could see blocks of links from the same URL - I highlighted in colours; Red - Definitely need to be removed Orange - Suspect, need to investigate further Yellow - Seem to be ok but may revisit Green - Happy with the link, no further action So to my question which relates to, is it 'black & white' - is it a case of 'good link v 'bad link' or could there be some middle ground? (am I making this process even more confusing than it actually is?) As an example, here are some 'Orange' URL's; http://www.24searchengines.com/ (not exact URL as it goes to the travel section which is my clients niche) - this to me looks spammy and I would normally 'paint it red' and look to remove, however, when I go to the 'contact us' page; (http://www.24searchengines.com/texis/open/allthru?area=contactus) and follow the link to remove from directory, it takes me here; http://www.dmoz.org/docs/en/help/update.html DMOZ??? My clients has a 'whole heap' of these type of links; http://www.25searchengines.com/ http://www.26searchengines.com/ http://www.27searchengines.com/ http://www.28searchengines.com/ ...and many many more!! Here is another example; http://foodys.eu/ http://foodys.eu/2007/01/04/the-smoke-ring-bbq-community/ ...plus many more... My client is in the 'cruise niche' and as there is a 'cruise' section on the site I'm not sure whether this constitutes a good, bad or indifferent link! Finally, prior to me working with this client (1 month) they moved their site from a .co.uk to a .com domain and redirected all links from the .co.uk to the .com (according to GWT, over 16k have been redirected) - a lot of these 'spammy' links were to the .co.uk and have thus been redirected, should I even consider removing the redirection or will that have severe consequences? Apologies for the long (long) post, I know I'm heading in the right direction but some assurance wouldn't go amiss! 🙂 Many thanks Andy <colgroup><col width="1317"></colgroup>

Indexing/Sitemap - I must be wrong
Hi All, I would guess that a great number of us new to SEO (or not) share some simple beliefs in relation to Google indexing and Sitemaps, and as such get confused by what Web master tools shows us. It would be great if somone with experience/knowledge could clear this up for once and all 🙂 Common beliefs: Google will crawl your site from the top down, following each link and recursively repeating the process until it bottoms out/becomes cyclic. A Sitemap can be provided that outlines the definitive structure of the site, and is especially useful for links that may not be easily discovered via crawling. In Google’s webmaster tools in the sitemap section the number of pages indexed shows the number of pages in your sitemap that Google considers to be worthwhile indexing. If you place a rel="canonical" tag on every page pointing to the definitive version you will avoid duplicate content and aid Google in its indexing endeavour. These preconceptions seem fair, but must be flawed. Our site has 1,417 pages as listed in our Sitemap. Google’s tools tell us there are no issues with this sitemap but a mere 44 are indexed! We submit 2,716 images (because we create all our own images for products) and a disappointing zero are indexed. Under Health->Index status in WM tools, we apparently have 4,169 pages indexed. I tend to assume these are old pages that now yield a 404 if they are visited. It could be that Google’s Indexed quotient of 44 could mean “Pages indexed by virtue of your sitemap, i.e. we didn’t find them by crawling – so thanks for that”, but despite trawling through Google’s help, I don’t really get that feeling. This is basic stuff, but I suspect a great number of us struggle to understand the disparity between our expectations and what WM Tools yields, and we go on to either ignore an important problem, or waste time on non-issues. Can anyone shine a light on this for once and all? If you are interested, our map looks like this : http://www.1010direct.com/Sitemap.xml Many thanks Paul

Adding Links Under Embedded Videos?
What's the current opinion of adding do-follow links under video embed codes? Like what Vimeo does. Is this allowed, or does Google/Matt Cutts suggest always no-following these links?
