Duplicate url problem causing me problems
-
Hi, i am working with a joomla site and i am using the sh404sef plugin. I have contacted the developer of the plugin who has not been very helpful so i am hoping to get help here.
The problem i am having is, the description of the page showing in google listings is not the same as what i have put into the meta tag description.
for example, for this page
http://www.clairehegarty.co.uk/virtual-gastric-band-with-hypnotherapy
the meta tag description should be
Gastric Band Hypnotherapy to lose weight guaranteed. Free Gastric Band Hypnosis Consultations with Well Known Gastric Hypno Band expert as seen on TV. Hypno Gastric Band Works. We offer full support after your Gastric Band Hypnotherapy
but in google it is showing
Gastric Band Hypnotherapy Works. If you would like a slimmer and healthier body with all the benefits of weight loss surgery without any of the risks that can be ...
now one thing i have noticed is: in the sh404sef control panel, i have noticed that i have the following
index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=190&id=153&lang=en&view=article
the above is the original url from day one but then i have the one below which is not the original
index.php?option=com_content&Itemid=190&catid=150&id=153&lang=en&view=article
i keep deleting the above which is not the original but it keeps coming back and i have been told this could be the fault
can anyone please help me with this and solve how to stop it from coming back so google shows the correct description please.

I'm not an expert with Joomla by any means, but based on your original post you seem confidant as to what the description tag should be, but then its not showing up in the actual code, so I feel like something with your Joomla setup isn't working. Or possibly you have two plugins that are conflicting with one another?
-
hi, really do not understand, can you explain more please
-
Hey Diane, Just following up on Richards post, but I'm guessing theres something bigger going on with your Joomla plugins because your description tag is blank. I checked both of the "non pretty" url's and they are both directing to the same page with the same blank description. So I would be looking for a missing checkbox somewhere in the setup for this particular page.

Hi Diane, just seen you are a 'journeyman' status so apologies if its likely to me my previous comment was simply telling you what you already know!
Best of luck in finding a fix,
RIchard

Hi Diane
Looking at page you mention I cannot see a meta description - its blank - therefore Google has no choice but to try and pick the most appropriate words from the page.
Bear in mind their is no guarantee Google will display the meta description - it will either pick the description or copy from the page - depending on which it thinks is most appropriate for your search.
On its own the meta description does not influence your position, however by being a powerful marketing message opportunity the better written ones may get more clicks... so being more popular may improve the position.
Sorry I dont know my way around Joomla so others are better to help you with the exact fix however hope the above may help in the direction you go.

URL removals
Hello there, I found out that some pages of the site have two different URL's pointing at the same page generating duplicate content, title and description. Is there a way to block one of them? cheers

Duplicate content
I'm getting an error showing that two separate pages have duplicate content. The pages are: | Help System: Domain Registration Agreement - Registrar Register4Less, Inc. http://register4less.com/faq/cache/11.html 1 27 1 Help System: Domain Registration Agreement - Register4Less Reseller (Tucows) http://register4less.com/faq/cache/7.html | These are both registration agreements, one for us (Register4Less, Inc.) as the registrar, and one for Tucows as the registrar. The pages are largely the same, but are in fact different. Is there a way to flag these pages as not being duplicate content? Thanks, Doug.

Trailing Slashes In Url use Canonical Url or 301 Redirect?
I was thinking of using 301 redirects for trailing slahes to no trailing slashes for my urls. EG: www.url.com/page1/ 301 redirect to www.url.com/page1 Already got a redirect for non-www to www already. Just wondering in my case would it be best to continue using htacces for the trailing slash redirect or just go with Canonical URLs?

Removing duplicate &var=1 etc var name urls from google
Hi I had a huge drop in traffic around the 11th of july over 50% down with no recovery as yet... ~5000 organic visits per day down to barley over 2500. I fixed up a problem that one script was introducing that had caused high bounce rates. Now i have identified that google has indexed the entire news section 4 times, same content but with var=0 var=1 2 3 etc around 40,000 urls in total. Now this would have to be causing problems. I have fixed the problem and those url's 404 now, no need for 301's as they are not linked to from anywhere. How can I get them out of the index? I cant do it one by one with the url removal request.. I cant remove a directory from url removal tool as the reuglar content is still there.. If I ban it in robots.txt those urls, wont it never try to index them again and thus not ever discover they are 404ing? These urls are no longer linked to from anywhere, so how can google ever reach them by crawling to find them 404ing?

URLs: To Change or Not to Change
Hello, We recently launched a redesigned site in Drupal in December of last year. We are an eco-travel company. My current URL's look like this: /africa-and-middle-east/kenya-tanzania /central-south-america/galapagos-islands My pages have good term targeting grades, and the rankings for the terms we are targeting - "kenya and tanzania safaris" and "galapagos islands cruises" are decent, but not great - most are on page 2 or 3. The one URL where I targeted our most important term, "amazon river cruises," I am still on page 2. /central-south-america/amazon-river-cruises My questions are: Did I miss an opportunity with the rest of the URL's, and should I consider changing the rest to more targeted terms with 301s? Since the new site launched in January, perhaps I have not given enough time for my new URL's to index and mature. Would it be easier to set up landing pages with unique article content that targets terms such as "galapagos islands cruises" and "kenya and tanzania safaris"? If so, how can I do it in such a way as to not "compete" with the pages I want to drive them to? This also raises the question of redirecting the same URL twice i.e. I would have 2 redirects in place for the same url e.g. from the former site to the new site, and yet another redirect to the most-recent URL. Is that a problem? Sorry if I've asked too many questions in one post. 😉 Any advice appreciated.
