Redirects in site map
-
I have a site with the ace/sef ( creates friendly URLS) in a large data base site.
It creates a site map dynamically.
Yet I realize one issue which I am trying to think through.
I recently changed my urls to include an ID number
example: homepage/houses/1134-big-blue-house
The prior url was: homepage/houses/big-blue-house
the original url above redirects to the new one with the ID like I want.
However the site map has both URLS in it which go to same page
I am not sure but it seems rather stupid to have the new URL and OLD redirected URL in the site map. Yet beside stupid I am wondering if this is duplicate content and will cause a penalty from the google bot.
What is your opinion ?

Howdy,
Actually, in the short-term, it may be beneficial to list both in your sitemap.
The reason for this is that you want search engines to try and crawl the "old" url to process the 301 that it finds there. The quicker they visit the old URL, the faster they will realize the page is redirecting, and this actually will reduce any perceived duplicated content issues on the part of the search engines.
Generally, you would do this with 2 sitemaps - one with the old URLs and one listing the new, and submit them both to Google via Webmaster Tools. You would leave the old one in place for 30 days before removing it.
After 30 days, however, it's best to use a single sitemap with only one set of URLs. As Ben mentioned, you don't want search engines wasting crawling resources on forever trying to visit URLs that redirect.
So after a time, it would be best to remove the old URLs from the sitemap. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the AceSEF Joomla package, but I believe there is a way to configure it to remove those URLs - even if manually according to the feature set: http://www.joomace.net/blog/xmap-joomap-sef-sm-2-and-acesef
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

I would not be afraid of duplicate content more than I would be afraid of diminishing value of your site's focus because the bot is wasting resources on the 301's.

What should I do with URLs that cause site map errors?
Hi Mozzers, I have a client who uses an important customer database and offers gift cards via https://clients.mindbodyonline.com located within the navigation which causes sitemap errors whenever it is submitted since domain is different. Should I ask to remove those links from navigation? if so where can I relocate those links? If not what should I do to have a site map without any errors? Thanks! 1n16jlL.png

To 301 redirect or not...
Hi guys i'd like to get your opinion on this. We currently have two sites, site A is the old one with PA44 and DA33. Site B is the new one which is going to replace site A it currently has PA37 and DA24 Our plan for the future is to shut down site A and redirect all pages using 301 to the relevant pages on side B. Currently we have some links in place for a couple of keywords on site A to site B which seems to be working great for our ranking. Now i'm wondering if this is maybe a good option, to give back links from A to B or will i pass through more link juice when redirecting everything? (ps. both are e commerce sites hosted and registred with different companies)

301 redirects reverting to 302 redirects
We recently built a new website with a new site structure. To prevent there being a load of 404's I redirected the old pages to the new relevant pages with 301 redirects. A few days later the SEOmoz crawl report alerted me to a load of 302 redirects. When I looked into this for some reason all of the 301 redirects I set up are reverting to 302 redirects. I did a test by 301 redirecting a made up URL to an existing page and the same thing happens - it 302 redirects. I can't find any settings in WordPress to possibly explain why this is happening. Has anyone got any ideas why this could be?

Can we use our existing site content on new site?
We added 1000s of pages unique content on our site and soon after google release penguin and we loose our ranking for major keywords and after months of efforts we decided to start a new site. If we use all the existing site content on new domain does google going to penalized the site for duplicate content or it will be treated as unique? Thanks

Just noindexed and redirected junk from my site. Now what?
Hi to all! I've just finished 301 redirecting some pages and "noindex - follow" some other. I have to add a lot of canonicals yet, but this is a start. Now how I check the results? Should I wait a week or so to see if something improves? How long does it takes for Google to remove the pages I've just redirected and noindexed? My site is crawled every day (as all sites I guess). Thanks!

Google Webmaster redirect vs 301 redirect
OK assuming a client's website has the right tracking script (hopefully analytics isn't effected by this issue), ... what happens if the htaccess file has a 301 redirect to the www-address, but within Google Webmaster Tools, the address chosen to crawl by Google is the non-www address? How will Google handle and which address takes precedence in this situation? _Cindy

Redirection in two phases
Hi, One of my client want a website revamp in two phases. The first phase would be to move the CMS from Sharepoint to Drupal keeping the same content and URLs but the page extension will change (it could become php or just the name of the page without any extension) The second phase will be a content revamp with URL change. The first phase will last 3 weeks and then we will push the second phase with the new content and the new URL. Some shortcuts to make it a more readable: old url = OURL old url with new extension = OURLEX new URL = NURL My problem is how can I manage the redirections. Should I: Phase 1: create one rule that will redirect all the OURL to the OURLEX Phase 2: keep the rule I created in phase 1 and add rules for OURLEX to NURL Or Phase 1: create one rule that will redirect all the OURL to the OURLEX Phase 2: keep the rule I created in phase 1 and add redirect OURL to NURL Or Phase 1: create one rule that will redirect all the OURL to the OURLEX Phase 2: remove the rule I created in phase 1 and add redirect OURL to NURL Or Phase 1: create a rules for each OURL that will redirect all the pages to OURLEX Phase 2: remove the rules I created in phase 1 and redirect the OURL to NURL Or Phase 1: create a rules for each OURL that will redirect all the pages to the OURLEX Phase 2: keep the rules I created in phase 1 and add rules to redirect the OURLEX to the NURL Or something else you think is better Difficult to explain, let me know if it's understandable. Thanks for you help! GaB

Can I noindex most of my site?
A large number of the pages on my site are pages that contain things like photos and maps that are useful to my visitors, but would make poor landing pages and have very little written content. My site is huge. Would it be benificial to noindex all of these?
