Can DIVS that look like frames hurt?
-
We are working with a site that has what appears to be a frame in the middle but it is not targeting a new html page it is just a div hiding content until you use the scroll bar.
What are best practices for working with this?
-
The answer is... it depends.
In general, Google doesn't like hidden content - but search engines won't penalize you for it unless they find that the hidden content is meant to deceive. In this case it doesn't sound like it's meant to deceive, but there are a few things to check to make sure the content is being indexed properly.
1. Does the content require javascript or flash to become visible? If so, it's possible for search engines to disregard it.
2. While it's common to place content in divs with CSS attributes set to 'hidden' (for usability purposes) and it's common for Google to index this content, it's hard to say how much seach engines will "weight" this content in it's ranking algorithms.
3. Check Google's cache of the page, and click the text-only link (for example, here's Google's text-only cache of this page. Is there any text visible that's not visible to the user under normal circumstances? This text may not be treated the same way by search engines as completely visible text.
Best practice is to view your site with javascript disabled (you can do this with the MozBar) and make sure everything is visible. If not, you may want to make sure everything degrades gracefully to ensure maximum accessibility, and maximum indexation by search engines.

Hello,
Hidden Divs or interactive content is okay as long as its there for enhancing the user experience. A good example would be a thumbnail image, upon click or rollover the image enlarges with some text describing the picture. A bad example would be a highlighted word when rolled over provides an tool tip with an ad or keyword spam in it.
Always design with User experience as a priority, then Search Engine. What you will find is that the more people who enjoy and talk about your site, the better the search engines will rank your site. That is how it is suppose to work, search engines want to return the most relative and best website for every query they receive, by focusing on the user first your are in essence doing SEO.
Hope that helps,
Don

Do UTM URL parameters hurt SEO backlink value?
Does www.example.com and www.example.com/?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Press+Release&utm_campaign=Google have the same SEO backlink value? I would assume that Google knows the difference.

Are we being Penalized? Can someone Assess Please!
We have two eCommerce sites. Both the sites can broadly be divided into 3 pages 1. Home Page. 2. Detail Page. 3 Category Pages (Altogether our site has approx 3 Million pages each) These are the site URLs http://bit.ly/9tRZIi - This is targeted for USA Audience http://bit.ly/P8MxPR - This is targeted for UK audience The .com domain which was launched earlier in 2011 is doing okay with decent organic traffic Precautions Taken: To avoid content being duplicate on both the sites we are using: a. Geo-targeting through Google webmaster tools b. rel=alternate tag on printsasia.co.uk Problem 1. The .co.uk domain which was launched in May 2012 started gaining organic traffic slowly but then suddenly dropped to almost 0 after September 18. 2. When we use operator site:printsasia.co.uk and apply a filter on past week/month we don't see any result. While when same operator used for "any time" we see some results. 3. According to webmaster tool, Google has indexed 95% of our URLs in the sitemap Our concern: Is our UK site penalized for some reasons? If yes, what could be the possible reason(s) for this penalty and possible steps to get out of it? Would request if experts here can review our site and help us.

How can I get an XML sitemap in the order that I want?
I use Screaming Frog and Xenu on a daily basis and I use them for sitemap creation, but the functionality is limited. With huge sites, it's really easy to create an ordered list of URLs for the sitemap in excel or word and upload that to Screaming Frog to crawl. The only problem is that it won't export the sitemap in the order that I uploaded it. Does anybody know of a tool that will do this or am I doomed to sit an manually arrange the URLs the way I want?

WIll Splash Page Triggered Only for iPhones Hurt SEO
Background We are in the process of launching a website where ticket inventory and processing are handled by a third party. Our primary means of traffic generation (at least at first) will be through SEO traffic. One of the things that they require of us is a script that will detect people with an iPhone and, upon entering the site, display a page giving people the option to call for help or continue to the site. (see attached screenshot) We will still get credit for the transaction (tracked through the phone #) and they say that this increases conversion rate, so it is something that we would like to use, unless it will affect our ability to rank in mobile. Problem My concern is that we will be penalized by Google (or rank poorly in Mobile search) because the page that iPhone users (not iPad users) are served is hosted on a different domain and not optimized at all for the keywords people are searching for. This is obviously a non-issue if Google never sees the page, but I have heard that Google will emulate different devices when crawling pages. Question Can anyone provide any insight about this? I feel like we are adding value to customers by giving them the option to speak to customer support, but I'm afraid that Google will think we are cloaking or at best providing the same page to anyone entering with an iPhone. Here is a link to the soon-to-be-launched website:http://dev.concerttickets.com.vhost.zerolag.com/ -- so you can check it out on your iPhone.

I have evidence that product videos are hurting our rankings - How do I hide them!?
We normally rank between #1-3 for long-tail product related keywords in our industry. Then we saw our rankings drop when we added product videos to some of our product pages. My hypothesis was that for most ecommerce-related queries, Google has a certain aesthetic that they are going for in the SERP's. They like to show video listings somewhere in the middle of the first page.. not as one of the first 3 results. Product page Product page Google shopping results Product page Video Result on product page Video Result on product page Product page I did an experiment by removing the product videos from a selection of our product pages and as soon as they were reindexed w/o the video we saw an average of a 3 spot jump in rankings! Since the product videos have actually helped on-site conversion rate.. we'd like to keep them on the product pages but hide them from being indexed by Google. Is there a safe way to do this? Is it possible to use an i-frame, or will Google still see the video on the page and index it as such. Thanks for any advice!
