How do I control the thumbnail image for a link on a Facebook post?
-
Hi, All!
I've spent about an hour working on this with no success, so I thought I would ask the community:
How do you tell Facebook which image to put in for the thumbnail on a link you're posting? And I would like it to be a different image for each post, and I don't want to have to deal with programming PHP (the main solutions I saw).
I'm on a Wordpress based site, and I've tried putting images in as the featured image, made sure they weren't huge (under 200x200), made sure they were .jpeg... and the only thing that Facebook offers me as a thumbnail is a generic "green globe" image that I don't believe comes from my site at all.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks, Tait.
Does the Wordpress plugin you mentioned actually add open graph tags? Because if not, here's one that I found that does - and works quite well:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-ogp/
Worth reading the plugin page on the author's website to make sure you have the installation set up right.

Thanks, Danny, but that's the only image offered (it says image 1/1 - and the arrows, "choosse thumbnail" don't work).
Any other ideas?

You should get arrows just underneath the thumbnail preview to be able to flick through all the images on the page you have linked too.
Hope that helps

This WordPress plugin might work out-of-the-box for you
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/like/
Just download, unzip it and put it in your wordpress plugins folder. Once you've done that login to the wordpress admin area and locate the "plugins" menu on the left side bar. Click on the word "Plugins". You'll be taken to a the "Plugins" dashboard page. Once you are there use the search box in the top right corner to find and activate your plugin.
I know you don't want to deal with PHP but if you have to here's how you'd do it. It's pretty easy.
You'll need to add some markup to the header (i.e. inside the "" tag) of your posts.
The old way was just to just use a "link rel" tag in your header. I believe it still works but is deprecated.
The new way is to use Facebooks open graph tags. See the "og:image" attribute in this document.
http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/
Here's an example of the new markup:
property="og:image" content="http://tctechcrunch.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/bb2.jpg"/>
You can test out your new markup using this tool.

Promoting our blog posts. Effective ways and planning.
Hi Guys. I work for TOAD diaries, we make personalised journals and diaries. So we've taken a dive into blogging recently to help with brand awareness/ loyalty and increase traffic to our site. We don't have much of a social media following. So I'd like to know about other effective ways to promote them. The advice seems to range from extremely obvious and generic on the one hand i.e) post it to your Facebook, twitter etc, to seriously in depth, using a multitude of tools I've never heard of. I mean it's pretty overwhelming 😕 So I'd like to focus down on 5 or 10 ways I can 'get it out there' effectively. Any thoughts? What are the essential tools/ techniques/ jobs I should be doing? Etc etc. Note on our blogs: They are very different from one another, so far we've done how to make an origami boat and paper vs digital: part 1. We're also working on a time management piece at the moment. So they're all to do with paper, stationery, organisation, planning ect. But like I say each blog post is quite varied. Thus the target market varies too. Also, do let me know what you think to the blog posts 🙂 Any area's we can improve upon? Cheers guys. Isaac.

Analytics tagging on social media links
Curious: do you all tag your social media links with Google Analytics parameters? I know Google Analytics automatically tags referrals from social channels, but I am interested in possibly adding additional tracking parameters to links that I share and potentially promote. If I tag my social links with GA tracking codes, and they are shared widely, do I lose any potential SEO value from those links? I know Google isn't necessarily factoring in social shares from Facebook, etc. yet, but it would seem that, since tagged links are ones that we've influenced, any shares of that link would potentially be considered unnatural? Just curious what others' best practices are for social sharing. Thanks, in advance.

Facebook Likes, Google +1s tactic - is this a good idea
Hello, For our eCommerce site, we're considering doing the following: When people call in to place an order by phone, we take their order and tell them while we have them on the phone that if they click the Facebook Like button and Google +1 button on our site's home page, we'll knock $3 off their total. We would just show them where the buttons are and refresh our screen to make sure the count went up by one like and one +1 when the customer said that they pressed the buttons. Then, we would continue with their phone order and just knock off $3.00 I may not do this just because it may be grey hat, but it seems 100% safe forever. If you recommend against doing this, can you think of any 100% white hat way to do the same thing? Thanks.

Does creating a Facebook App help your social SEO factors?
We're looking to build out an event countdown widget for Facebook users to install as an App. Should we just focus on creating a useful app, or should we be trying to also optimise it for Likes, Comments, Shares etc. Having read the Searchmetrics 2012 report we're starting to ramp up our FB efforts...

What is the value of getting a Facebook like?
Is requesting people to like your facebook page of any real value for a small business? Is it better to encourage people to write a comment/testimonial about your product or service on their own status with a link to your website and/or Facebook page? I have a lot of clients getting more and more into the concept of social marketing so I am now wondering how best to guide them in the right direction with regards to Facebook specifically

Twitter inbound link not being indexed
Hello Mozzers! I was using open site explorer to investigate inbound links to our company website and also to our competitors. The main difference being is their top links are all coming from twitter - where as ours aren't. Now our twitter account is about 10months old maybe more and it's got the standard setup with a description and the URL. We've also been tweeting with a link directly to our site. Yet no luck? Am I missing something? Thanks, Dan
