Finding affiliate links with opensiteexplorer
-
Hey guys,
I'm trying to develop lists of our competitors affiliates using opensiteexplorer using the following method
- When logged in to seomoz, go to http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/
- Search for<rival company="" domain=""></rival>
- Select Show ALL links from ALL pages to PAGES ON THIS ROOT DOMAIN and SHOW LINKS UNGROUPED
- Click 'Filter'
- Click_ 'Download csv'_
- Open the csv in excel and filter the Target URL column for any known part of the affiliate link (example ?a_aid) - this leaves you with a list of the affiliate links
- Filter out duplicates
Is this the best process? I have a feeling I'm missing some as OSE truncates to 25 links per domain. It would be nice also if OSE could do the filtering for me.
Any better ways to do this?

Howdy Pilkster!
Sounds like your method is pretty good, and I don't have too many suggestions to improve it.
In my experience, lot of sites either cloak or redirect affiliate links, so I bet they can be near impossible to find, even for search engines!
OSE advanced reports can filter by anchor text and several other variables, but as you noted it can't sort by URL parameters. If you'd like to see this as a feature request, we have a forum for that - https://seomoz.zendesk.com/forums/293194-SEOmoz-PRO-Feature-Requests
(it would be a pretty cool feature actually - I'd vote for it
As for only seeing 25 links per domain, this could miss some links, but I suspect the majority of the time if a domain links to another with an affiliate link, most of the links would also be affiliate links. There are plans to expose more of this data in the future, at least through the API.
Thanks for the feedback!

In fact when I shared the list of competitors with my client they are sure I'm missing a large proportion of the affiliates. Any ideas?

Inbound links not found on OSE
I have live inbound links for the site htp://vpnexpress.net, but OSE reports nothing found. How long does it usually take for them to index high PR site links? Thanks.

On Link Analysis tab I my best pages are 301 and 404 pages.
I looked on my redirrect file and found that /* redirects to /v/404.asp.
Moz Pro | | sbetzen
However if you look below at the link analysis the 404 page is getting a 404 error.
The homepage ecowindchimes.com/ is getting a 301 (but I don't know where it is going to).
The third one is also redirected. 1. [No Data] ecowindchimes.com/ ||| 301 ||| 2 ||| 36 2. 2. [No Data] ecowindchimes.com/v/404.asp ||| 404 ||| 2 ||| 34 3. [No Data] 3. ecowindchimes.com/index.html?lang=en-us&target=d2.html ||| 301 ||| 1 ||| 33 So I have 2 questions: 1) should this be fixed? and 2) how? This is a volusion site and I believe the "catchall" redirect was done by them0 -
Open Site Explorer - Link Export Not Showing Same Number of Links
Noob question. I'm using Open Site Explorer to hunt down some external links for a website. In the attached image (post-pressing the filter button), it says I have 889 external links, but after I've downloaded the CSV, I only get 695 links. Why the difference in number? And if I'm doing something wrong, how do I make sure I'm getting the full amount of external links to my client's website? Thanks! GG6wURf.jpg

NoFollow Links from Subdomain to root domain better than DoFollow Links?
Our service at fotograf.de is a shopsystem for professional photographers. The customers can build their own website with our tool including an onlineshop to sell their pictures. Here is my question: One part of the customers use subdomains of our site like photographers.fotograf.de. On each customer website we include a backlink to our homepage www.fotograf.de. From SEO view is it better to set these links as NoFollow Links? Or should we put one Follow Link on the starting page on each site and on the other pages only NoFollow Link? Are these links bad for our SEO regarding link diversity because they all come from one root domain? Thanks for the answers! Sebastian

Ways to Find Potential Backlink Providers
We are doing a backlink campaign for a personal development training company that is a pretty good authority with lots of good long articles. So far I found competitors ranking for our keywords - about 10 of them - and analyzed their backlinks We found about 40 possible backlink providers. What's the next step to find more? I know 2 possibilities so far: do inurl commands in google to find related sites with resource sections - how do I do this? Analyze the backlinks of the sites that make up competitor's backlinks.] - how do I organize this huge task? What else is there?

Internal Links
I've searched high and low, but I could just be missing it... Is there a report on internal links? Maybe a count? Or better yet, a way to see internal anchor text?

Non-Recognition of Links
Hi All, I asked about a client last month and have had to do some other digging to try to find out what's going on with its Google rankings. According to our link-building spreadsheet, we have got up to 50 links (from 50 domains) in process of being actioned and a large proportion of these are actually in existence. There are two questions:- 1. Open Site Explorer only recognises 3 domains - as I know that other domains exist and are pointing (mostly 'followed'), what can be the reason OSE doesn't recognise this? 2. What can be done to encourage these external links to be more easily accessible by OSE and, presumably other bots? Other Points:- 1. I initially thought it might be crawl blocking issue causing the rankings, but Bing/Yahoo rankings are slowly dragging themselves upwards. 2. Robots.txt is not blocking any of the site 3. Pro on-site analysis for the target keyword is 'A' 4. The website's stats per OSE are better than some competitors in the top 20 except on the root domain issue, which is why the above point is important. Link building for other clients has worked really well without hiccups and with general gradual recognition, so any tips from more experienced folks out there would be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks, Martin
