Open Directory Project

Hello.
Is it useful to have a site listed in the Open Directory Project?
Thank you.

Thank you, Nakul!

Thank you, ColinSV!

Yup, definitely. Submit it and forget it. If you get it, great. If not, don't stress yourself to it. There's not much you can do anyways.
As Robert said, it's definitely a good link. Also as Colin said, it's "very" important to submit it in the right category and the right title and description. Don't over optimize it. Keep it simple and descriptive enough.

I also believe it's absolutely useful, ODP data still gets aggregated by smaller search engines, other directories, etc...but like Robert said it's not gaurunteed, pay close attention to make sure you choose the most appropriate category and the listing description/title is quality for the best chances.
Good luck!

NYC-SEO
Personally, I like being listed in ODP/dmoz and believe it is a valuable link. Like anything, you cannot look at it in a vacuum. If this were the only link, it might not be as good as others with authority and less links to you. But, it is recognized as a good link and it cannot be bought. You have to have it submitted (to speed up the process if possible - they do get listed without you submitting) and then hopefully an editor will approve and you get a listing at some point.
We always submit a site after its been up three to six months or with a newer client and an older site, etc. Sometime they end up listed, sometimes they don't. When they do, I think the link is good.
On the paid side, Yahoo Directory is a similar link IMO.
Best,
Robert

DMOZ Directory Impact on Rankings
For about 5-10 years ago many SEOers said that it is in particular important to be in Dmoz. What about nowadays?

NoFollow & Directory Scraper Backlinks
I was wondering how important it was to remove/disavow: NoFollow backlinks - many ("buy viagra" etc). Directory backlinks - many questionable/generic directories. Obviously the focus is the equity passing links but both of the above constitute a significant proportion of backlinks to the site - I've seen that "scrapers" are seen as natural and obviously NoFollow do not pass link juice - but does the sheer number have a bearing and therefore make them equally important to address? Thanks in advance for your responses. Regards

Are directories still a valid practice? If so what are some of your favorite and most authoritative directories?
After combing over several competitor sites I have found many if not the majority of their links are from directories. I am curious to know if individuals/companies/seos etc. still use directories, if so what are some of the favorites?

Paid Directory Links
To my surprise, I couldn't find a clear answer to the questions "Do paid directory links violate Google guidelines?" I know Matt Cutt's recently had a video on paid links, but it didn't really cover paid directory links. Are well-curated directory sites that charge for inclusion violate Google's guidelines? A good example would be the business.com directory.

This directory looks great - would you agree?
I know people have mixed feelings towards submitting their sites to directories, but this one really seemed special, so I decided to share the opportunity with the Moz community, as well as open up a discussion on the value of being a part of this directory (and similar ones.) We recently submitted our site to Dial a Human (www.dialahuman.com) It is a directory of companies' phone numbers, which go directly to a person (bypassing the machines.) I think this directory actually does provide users with value, and is far from your typical link farm. The Page Authority is 56 and the Domain Authority is 47, and it is a PR5 site. The other companies listed are all extremely reputable (most of them are fortune 500 companies.) The fee to join is $75-$150, but to be included with this group of companies, we felt it was very worthwhile. We would join this type of directory over and over again. Would you? If you have any other directories which are of the same caliber please share!

Which Directory Sites to Choose?
Hi All I am a newbie to SEO and have a quick Q. Assuming that appropriate steps would be to; a) Ensure all onsite matters are are correct, title tags, meta descriptions, redirects, canonical issues. b) Submit to Directories c) Build Links I am approaching step b) Which Directories are worth submitting to? For those which require payment, how can I decide which are value for money or should I just use SEOMOZ list of links and assume that theyre worth the $50 - $100 if my higher ranking competitors have links from these directories. Also, can this be looked opon as grey/black hat 'buying of links'? Thank you Sean www.pretavoir.co.uk

What are the best paid directories today?
Looking to do some paid directory submissions and was wondering if a) they were still worth the money and b) if you have $500-$1,000 what paid directories would you submit too? I am assuming that BOTW is still on the list, but I rarely every see a BOTW link in any backlink report. Are they still relevant or are they more a sign of quality to the engines rather than an actual link? Same with JoeAnt
