Scarce niche websites for link building

Hello!
A small company from Mexico that offers cleaning services for home & businesses wants to rank on the first page of Google.
The Good:
Every month they give away stuff (discounts and/or a free service) and they also participate in campaigns that support non-profitable organizations & charity. So there is plenty of material for me to build some backlinks and to create some interesting content.
Their competitors have 0 SEO. I have been doing my homework and none of their competitors websites that are ranking on the top 5 are doing any kind of SEO. But they have had their website for a long time and they probably have a decent amount of traffic per day. Open Site Explorer shows minimal to no websites pointing to them.
Google Adwords has increased their sales. They are using virtually nothing as budget and it is helping, but they want organic SEO.
The Bad:
Blogs seem to be dead in Mexico. And that is one of my strongest ways to create backlinks. I usually get a blogger to write about the company I'm working for to create backlinks and works like a charm in countries were SEO is prehistoric.
Usually it takes me very little effort to accomplish a website to rank very well in this kind of scenario, but I'm having trouble this time.
The Something:
I have been able to boost their rankings with basic SEO in a month but I'm stuck in page #2-5 on their most important keywords.
The Ugly:
I'm out of ideas. And their budget isn't good enough to apply paid strategies.
Any ideas?

Hi DHStom,
Thank you for your recommendation, I will start working on this strategy.
Cheers

Why don't you consider looking outside of Mexico for some company websites elsewhere that are in a similar industry or about a similar subject matter. As long as the content is relevant in some way to both websites and holds unique value then it should be worth exploring in my opinion.

I tried getting links from the non-profit organizations but... one doesn't have a website (and btw I'm considering making it for free) and the other one has terrible organization and no one seems to know who is in charge of the website, how to update it, etc. It is a bit sad.
I'm trying the social media approach but it is quite the challenge. They had less than 50 fans and I haven't been able to reach a 100 yet. I am struggling there too but just with a bit of patience I'm sure it will turn out ok.
I have noticed the strategies I find online regarding SEO and Social Media aren't very successful in Mexico. Mostly because they do not have strong online communities, and without them doing SEO is more difficult in my opinion. Educating people to adapt to certain activities or behaviors one would normally expect is not easy at all.

Hello Eblan!
You probably have also tried to get links from these non-profit organizations with whom they are working with?
You didn't mention social media at all. It's probably lively in Mexico? You could try to create campaigns using different social media platforms around the free giveaways to get some social mentions.

Do you get links from new websites?
There's a new industry specific website that looks decent. It's clean and nothing spammy. However, it's so new it's DA is under 10. Is it worth pursuing a link from a site like this? On one hand, there's nothing spammy and it is industry specific. On the other...it's just DA is so terrible (worse than any of our other links), I don't want it to hurt us. Any thoughts? Ruben

Deleting Website Section, Preserve Links with 301?
HI Mozers! I have a client who is deleting their community section of their website because they have little activity. I know there are some inbound links going the the community section. If I 301 redirect those links to the homepage instead, will that still preserve the SEO credit of the link -OR-is Google smart enough to know it's redirecting the the homepage and kill the link love? My initial thoughts are that Google will see that it's being redirected to the homepage and not count the link anymore, but I'm just guessing. Any ideas? Anyone have any experience in something like this?

Website structure question - linking to categories?
Hi there, I have a video website (user uploaded clips) which are sorted into 75 categories. Now, these categories have their own pages and 90% of the traffic comes from the category keywords. All 75 categories are linked from the homepage (which is obvious, right?) AND from all video pages. Now, my question is: from SEO point of view, it is OK to link to categories from the video pages, too? I am in doubt here because: 1. I tend to think it is OK because I get a lot of traffic for the category keywords. 2. I tend to think that isn't OK because I get almost no traffic for the video pages. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Redirect micro-niche site to bigger niche site?
I have a micro niche site that performs reasonably well (page 1 at least) for it's main keywords. It is an exact match domain. To save the ongoing maintenance of a site that gets less than 10 visitors a day, I was thinking of redirecting this micro niche site to a bigger site (a niche site that the micro niche fits into, if that makes sense!) Would I lose rankings because of the power that the EMD provided? Would it be better keeping it there for the backlink it provides to the bigger site (although on the same C Class IP)

Links from tumblr
I have two links from hosted tumblr blogs which are not on tumblr.com. So, website1 has a tumblr blog: tumblr.website1.com And another site website2.com also uses the a record/custom domains option from tumblr but not on a subdomain, which is decribed below: http://www.tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains Does this mean that all links from such sites count as coming from the same IP in google's eyes? Or is there value in getting links from multiple sites because the a-record doesn't affect SEO in a negative way? Many thanks, Mike.

Link Request Email on Site`s Link Pages
Hello I have assembled a list of web-sites that have "Links" section that has a list of persons` favorite tools. Those pages have a link to my competitor. I know my tool is just as good if not better and want to request a link. I`m thinking of sending an email asking for a link and offering a small amount of money for it. Questions: A) How much should I offer? Should I offer anything at all B) Is there an email style that someone can suggest that has been tested and proven to work for this type of situtation?
