How to redirect whole site to home page without breaking wordpress
-
Hi all
I had a phpprobid site which was heavily indexed but got hacked.
I have deleted the old site and installed wordpress and a holding page.
I can't work out how to 301 redirect all the old indexed pages to the home page without the existing wordpress redirect.
Anyone care to help?

Actually, before you redirect ALL errors to the homepage, please do some reading on that tactic:
http://www.rimmkaufman.com/blog/seo-and-404-pages/01022013/
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=93641

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2011/05/do-404s-hurt-my-site.html
Google specifically says (page 13)
Avoid not having a 404 page at all.
Finally:

Use a 301 Redirect to permanently redirect all pages on your old site to your new site. This tells search engines and users that your site has permanently moved. We recommend that you move and redirect a section or directory first, and then test to make sure that your redirects are working correctly before moving all your content.
Don't do a single redirect directing all traffic from your old site to your new home page. This will avoid 404 errors, but it's not a good user experience. It's more work, but a page-to-page redirect will help preserve your site's ranking in Google while providing a consistent and transparent experience for your users. If there won't be a 1:1 match between pages on your old site and your new site (recommended), try to make sure that every page on your old site is at least redirected to a new page with similar content.
Google does not recommend this tactic and says "Avoid." That's enough for me. I don't know how to help you with the Mod Rewrite but I wouldn't 301 your 404.

Thanks Moosa
I hadn't considered that way of handling the issue.
SEO-wise is that a good tactic or is it best just to salvage something from the train wreck?

If there URLs are not available then they must be giving the status of 404 all you have to do is to add a command in the .htaccess that any page that as a status of 404 will redirect to home page so that way all the pages that are no more available will automatically take the user to the home page.
Hope this helps!

yeh - they weren't in directories - they were top level - so the old urls are like
xxxx.com/featured,option,auctions_show/
There's over 1000 of them so I was hoping to do a mod rewrite that would 301 them all to the home page without breaking the wordpress rewrite rules.

The new Wordpress installation will take all the homepage juice so you don't need to direct home to home.
For all the rest, do you have an old sitemap or directory? You could easily direct old pages to the same relevant new pages or even back to homepage if you need. If you just want the new site.com to take all site.com's old juice - that will happen as Google indexes the new Wordpress.
After that it's simple enough - just Redirect 301 /old-directory/ http://www.site.com in an htaccess file.
Am I missing something in the question?

How to 301 Redirect /page.php to /page, after a RewriteRule has already made /page.php accessible by /page (Getting errors)
A site has its URLs with php extensions, like this: example.com/page.php I used the following rewrite to remove the extension so that the page can now be accessed from example.com/page RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php [L] It works great. I can access it via the example.com/page URL. However, the problem is the page can still be accessed from example.com/page.php. Because I have external links going to the page, I want to 301 redirect example.com/page.php to example.com/page. I've tried this a couple of ways but I get redirect loops or 500 internal server errors. Is there a way to have both? Remove the extension and 301 the .php to no extension? By the way, if it matters, page.php is an actual file in the root directory (not created through another rewrite or URI routing). I'm hoping I can do this, and not just throw a example.com/page canonical tag on the page. Thanks!0 -
Is site page structure hurting its chances to rank?
I have a client that sells geotextiles and related products. None of his keywords gets a lot of traffic google as it is a very B2B niche specific industry. For instance, and these numbers are off the top of my head The phrase geotextiles may get 80 searches a month and we have a domain.com/geotextiles.php page Then there are woven and nonwoven geotextiles which may get 30 searches a month We too have a domain.com/nonwoven-geotextiles.php and etc It then goes even further and has things like slit film series non woven /woven and we have subpages from there. To me, I feel as if we need to merge all of these pages to just a singular geotextile page with headers for woven and nonwoven and product info for the sub branches of those two. I feel as if we are basically competing for the same phrase again and again and again for very small amounts of traffic. Thoughts?

Embed Same Video On Multiple Pages or 301 Redirect Into 1?
I have 3 pages that rank VERY well for related terms such as: -How to get widgets -How to become a widget -Getting widgets -etc. I am incorporating a video on the topic and rewriting much of the content on the site. I am wondering if it is wise to 301 redirect all 3 pages to 1 page that has the new/better video content or if I should leave the old content that is ranking well and embed the video on the top of each. The anal retentive side of me wants a nice new site structure and 1 powerful page. However, if the 3 pages are currently ranking (sometimes 2 pages in the same top 10 results), should I mess with what is working? Ultimately my goal is to increase the avg time on site as these 3 pages are top traffic pages for the site. However, they do not convert at all, as they are for a product we don't offer. Thoughts?

How would you handle 12,000 "tag" pages on Wordpress site?
We have a Wordpress site where /tag/ pages were not set to "noindex" and they are driving 25% of site's traffic (roughly 100,000 visits year to date). We can't simply "noindex" them all now, or we'll lose a massive amount of traffic. We can't possibly write unique descriptions for all of them. We can't just do nothing or a Panda update will come by and ding us for duplicate content one day (surprised it hasn't already). What would you do?

Do in page links pointing to the parent page make the page more relevant for that term?
Here's a technical question. Suppose I have a page relevant to the term "Mobile Phones". I have a piece of text, on that page talking about "mobile phones", and within that text is the term "cell phones". Now if I link the text "cell phones", to the page it is already placed on (ie the parent page) - will the page gain more relevancy for the term "cell phones"?? Thanks
