Will combining multiple websites/brands into one Wordpress Multisite Installation hurt SEO?
-
My company currently operates four websites, independently of each other, a corporate website and three separate store brands.
- innovativemattresssolutions.com - corporate website
- mattressking.net
- sleepoutfitters.com
- mattresswarehouse.com
All of our stores have the same branding, same TV spots, same print ads, etc across the company, we just swap out logos on all marketing pieces.
It is proving nearly impossible for us to maintain four separate websites, currently on three different platforms. all four are hosted separately as of now. We would like to combine all four websites to one Wordpress Multisite installation so we can manage the pages from one place, using the same theme and even content in many places because all brands share the same info, policies, products, etc. We would set up wordpress multi using subfolders for installation and point the URL directly to resolve to the appropriate subfolder. The only site that would crosslink to the others would be the corporate website.
Is this a bad idea for SEO? What other options would we have? Should we keep the corporate site on its own installation, but put the other three brands on a multisite install? Would duplicating content on the three brand pages be an issue? Less of an issue if they were not on multisite?
Any insight is much appreciated.

My first reaction was the same as Brads. After looking at the sites themselves and hearing your response, I think it's very normal to operate these sites separately since they are separate brands. I wouldn't worry about that aspect.

So, for the most part I don't see any issue with this.
The only thing that comes to mind is that all 4 domains would suddenly be on a single IP address. While that's fine for the brands that aren't competing with each other, it looks like there are a few store location in KY under competing brand names. In the event that there are geographic areas where you have competing locations that are suddenly on the same IP address, I could potentially see one of the domains being affected if the SERP for "city name KY mattresses" is highly competitive. I don't have any tests I can point you towards to support this, it's primarily a theory that Google might display just 1 in the interest of domain diversity. That said, I wouldn't worry about it too heavily.
Another option is a paid service such as ManageWP.com. This would allow you to manage multiple Wordpress installations on separate servers and mitigate any unforeseen consequences of having the domains on a single IP address. I can't say that the risk of experiencing issues simply due to server IP address is enough to justify the expense, however, so that should show you that I'm not very worried about the IP consideration overall.

Brett,
It sounds like there are more business reasons other than search visibility. Given that information I can see this is a more difficult issue for you. I don't envy you. I stand by my assessment that managing 3 brands that are so similar is going to prove to be difficult. In my business we attempted to manage 2 for a very long time. Ours was more driven by search visibility but we also had a brand associated. Ultimately we decided to perform the 301s and certainly lost some business by doing so. In the end I stand by the decision. I think the focus on 1 hurts in the short run and pays huge dividends in the long run.

Thanks Brad, I don't take that as harsh at all and I don't disagree with you. Yes, search visibility, rankings of local store listings, etc is one of the primary reasons we have operated the sites separately to this point. One of the sites is a recent acquisition so that has just compounded the issue. I should clarify that content is not 100% duplicated, mainly store locator functionality and local partnership content on each site.
The other reason we have not gone the 301 route is marketing perception. Several years ago, this is how we handled it. But the brands operate independent of each other in different areas of the country. It's not a Limited example where they operate Gap, Old Navy, etc. Customers in the Mattress King area of the country, have no idea what Sleep Outfitters is and 301s to the strongest domain was causing huge bounce rates, customer confusion and low visibility for individual store locations.
So there is our issue. Weighing pros and cons and not sure which side is winning right now.

I think there is a bigger issue going on here. Why are you operating 3 different sites where you are just swapping out logos? I don't see the multi site causing you any specific problems but my gut tells me your long term prospects are not good. All the effort that you are going into for this elaborate scheme are probably causing you to not do as well in search as you would with one brand. I would suggest instead of trying to maintain 3 brands (for no other perceivable reason than search visibility) that you bite the bullet and reduce to 1 site. Take your best one and 301 the others to it. Maintain one platform and you might be able to cut some operational costs internally. To me the strategy you are outlining above was a good idea in 2005. Not trying to be harsh. Hope this helps.

Canconical tag on site with multiple URL links but only one set of pages
We have a site www.mezfloor.com which has a number of Url's pointing at one site. As the url's have been in use for many years there are links from many sources include good old fashioned hard copy advertising. We have now decided that it would be better to try to start porting all sources to the .co.uk version and get that listing as the prime/master site. A couple of days ago I went through and used canonical tags on all the pages thinking that would set the priority and that would also strengthen the page in terms of trust due to the reduced duplication. However when I went to scan the site in MOZ the warning that the page redirects came up and I am beginning to think that I need to remove all these canonical tags so that search engines do not get into a confused spiral where we loose the little page rank we have. Is there a way that I can redirect everything except the target URL without setting up a separate master site just for all the other pages to point at.

Website Redesign / Switching CMS / .aspx and .html extensions question
Hello everyone, We're currently preparing a website redesign for one of our important websites. It is our most important website, having good rankings and a lot of visitors from Search Engines, so we want to be really careful with the redesign. Our strategy is to keep as much in place as possible. At first, we are only changing the styling of the website, we will keep the content, the structure, and as much as URLs the same as possible. However, we are switching from a custom build CMS system which created URLs like www.homepage.com/default-en.aspx

No we would like to keep this URL the same , but our new CMS system does not support this kind of URLs. The same with for instance the URL: www.homepage.com/products.html
We're not able to recreate this URL in our new CMS. What would be the best strategy for SEO? Keep the URLs like this:
www.homepage.com/default-en
www.homepage.com/products Or doesn't it really matter, since Google we view these as completely different URLs? And, what would the impact of this changes in URLs be? Thanks a lot in advance! Best Regards, Jorg1 -
Domain Forwarding / Multiple Domain Names / or Rebuild Blogs on them
I am considering forwarding 3 very aged and valuable domain names to my main site. There were once over 100 blog posts on each blog and each one has a page authority of 45 and domain authority of 37. My question is should i put up three blogs on the domains and link them to my site or should i just forward the domains to my main site? Which will provide me with more value. I have the capability to have some one blog on them every day. However, i do not have access to any of the old blog posts. I guess i could scrape it of archive.org. Any advice would be appreciated. /out/ URLs in GWMTs
I am recently seeing some URLs come up as 404s in GWMTs for a client. They look like this: http://client-url/out/www.linkedin.com/company/client-linkedin-name /out/client-url/sub-directory/postname/ We thought they might have something to do with the social plugins but they are all over the place and they are sometime for internal pages on the site. Anyone run into these and know why they are happening?

Best way to get SEO friendly URLSs on huge old website
Hi folks Hope someone may be able to help wit this conundrum: A client site runs on old tech (IIS6) and has circa 300,000 pages indexed in Google. Most pages are dynamic with a horrible URL structure such as http://www.domain.com/search/results.aspx?ida=19191&idb=56&idc=2888 and I have been trying to implement rewrites + redirects to get clean URLs and remove some of the duplication that exists, using the IIRF Isapi filter: http://iirf.codeplex.com/ I manage to get a large sample of URLS re-writing and redirecting (on a staging version of the site), but the site then slows to crawl. To imple, ent all URLs woudl be 10x the volume of config. I am starting to wonder if there is a better way: Upgrade to Win 2008 / IIS 7 and use the better URL rewrite functionality included? Rebuild the site entirely (preferably on PHP with a decent URL structure) Accept that the URLS can't be made friendly on a site this size and focus on other aspects Persevere with the IIRF filter config, and hope that the config loads into memory and the site runs at a reasonable speed when live None of the options are great as they either involve lots of work/cost of they involve keeping a site which performs well but could do so much better, with poor URLs. Any thoughts from the great minds in the SEOmoz community appreciated! Cheers Simon

How best to optimise a website for more than one location?
I have a client who is a acupuncturist and operates clinics both in Chester and Knutsford in Cheshire the site performs well for Chester based terms such as "Chester acupuncture" this is the primary location the client wishes to focus efforts on but would also like to improve rankings for the Knutsford clinic and area. I have setup local places pages for each clinic and registered each on different local directories. Both clinic addresses are placed on each page of the website and have a map to each on the contact page. Most of the on-page SEO elements such as page titles, descriptions and on-page keywords mainly focus on the term "Chester" over "Knutsford" is it advisable to target both locations in these page elements or will local search have an effect on this and will reduce/ dilute overall rankings for Chester clinic? I haven't setup and separate page for each clinic location as this might help in terms of SEO for improving ranking for both locations but from a user point of view it would just duplicate the same content but for a different location and also would create duplicate content issues. Any advice/ experience on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

WordPress Question: Canonical field in Category Section of Yoast SEO Plug In
I've added the Yoast SEO Plug In for my word press blog. When I add a new category, there is a listing called "Edit Category". On this page there is a listing "Yoast WordPress SEO Settings." In this section, there are two fields in which I need guidance on what is supposed to be included. One: There is a field called "Canonical". What info is supposed to be entered in this field and how does it need to be formatted? Is it a URL. If so, what URL is supposed to go there? Two: Breadcrumbs title. What is the purpose of this field? (Isn't it OK to just use the category name as the breadcrumb title?)
