How to handle outdated products/pages?
-
Hi,
I wonder how I should handle pages with outdated products. Our market is changing rapidly unfortunately so products we offered in the past are no longer existent.
So for example one of our product was called "PRODUCT 1"
The URL for this product is still:
www.mydomain.com/product-1/with different subpages about the product like:
www.mydomain.com/product-1/about/
www.mydomain.com/product-1/howto/
www.mydomain.com/product-1/pricing/
www.mydomain.com/product-1/whatever/Our new product is totally different from the first one.
Is it still a good idea to set up 301 redirects or are there any other ideas?
Thanks in advance

Hello Bastian,
With regard to outdated products the best solution I have found is to 301 redirect the old product URL to the closest category page. I prefer this to redirecting to another product page because once the new product is outdated you'll be going through multiple redirects.
Look into updating the old blog posts and making them more relevant for readers today. If you are unable to do that I would just leave them where they are. As they get outdated they should drop in the rankings anyway. Or you could 301 redirect them to a more recent post.

Hi Kyle,
thanks for your fast answer.
It's really difficult for me where to get started. I have the same problem with old blog posts. Should I keep all the old blog posts even they are not relevant and bad written?
Or is it sometimes a good choice to make a break and build a new website from scratch with just some of the "old" good pages and focus on new relevant content?
Thanks in advance

Hi Bastian,
You're quite fortunate here in that your URL structure is very simple. When product SKUs, item IDs and search parameters enter the mix it can complicate things further. However, given your clean URLs you should be able to 301 redirect without any problems.
The question is where do you 301 that product URL (and its subfolders)? Maybe a new product has superseded it - that might be a good fit; or maybe you can redirect to a category that contains similar products; or if this product has been discontinued and there are no similar products elsewhere on your site, you could 301 back to the homepage.
Of course, you'll want to ensure that your internal linking is also up to scratch and reflects the changes you want to make. Either remove the internal links to that page or send them elsewhere (preferably the former if the product is no longer in stock).
Happy redirecting.

Our protected pages 302 redirect to a login page if not a member. Is that a problem for SEO?
We have a membership site that has links out in our unprotected pages. If a non-member clicks on these links it sends a 302 redirect to the login / join page. Is this an issue for SEO? Thanks!

Best practice to handle Wordpress Categories/Tags
Hello Mozzers, I am sure a lot of people here are using wordpress. How do you handle Categories & Tags? I came across that they produce a lot of duplicate content in the google index. My website is brand new so I don't have any traffic yet, how would you handle it? noindex, follow? Or block /categories/ and /tags/ from robots.txt? Probably I am completely wrong with both ways? I am grateful for your answers! Best regards!

According to 1 of my PRO campaigns - I have 250+ pages with Duplicate Content - Could my empty 'tag' pages be to blame?
Like I said, my one of my moz reports is showing 250+ pages with duplicate content. should I just delete the tag pages? Is that worth my time? how do I alert SEOmoz that the changes have been made, so that they show up in my next report?

Do I need to add canonical link tags to pages that I promote & track w/ UTM tags?
New to SEOmoz, loving it so far. I promote content on my site a lot and am diligent about using UTM tags to track conversions & attribute data properly. I was reading earlier about the use of link rel=canonical in the case of duplicate page content and can't find a conclusive answer whether or not I need to add the canonical tag to these pages. Do I need the canonical tag in this case? If so, can the canonical tag live in the HEAD section of the original / base page itself as well as any other URLs that call that content (that have UTM tags, etc)? Thank you.

Position of elements in the product page
Hello. As I am a SEO Beginner I wonder if the elements of the page will make a better or worse ranking. I ask this because my boss asked to change the order of the elements. He wants to put first the section of Supplies and Accesories, and then additional information. http://www.theprinterdepo.com/hp-9500mfp-refurbished-printer Does it affect my seo for worse or for better?
