Site verification in WMT
-
Hello all,
I have a site and I want to set a preferred domain but when I do it says I need to verify my site but it gives me no ideas how to do that.
I know that normally you have to do it when you set the account up but I had an analytics account for this domain first then just logged on with those details and I was in with no verification process.

Thank you all that seemed to have worked.

What Chad means, Ian, is that you have to set up two separate GWT sites. One for yoursite.com and a separate one for www.yoursite.com.
When on the Webmaster Tools dashboard, you'll need to click the big red Add Site button on the right to add a new site to your GWT account - create it using the version of the site that's different from the first one you created. The new site can be verified the same way the original was, using your Analytics accounts.
One the second site is set up, set the preferred domain in both sites to the same version.
The quirk is that GWT considers ALL subdomains to be SEPARATE sites, and the www version of a website is technically a subdomain.
Hope that helps?
Paul

Hi Chad,
The problem is I can't verify anything atm.
-
Hi Kyle,
Under manage site there is only
Add or remove usersGoogle Analytics property<a class="gwt-Anchor">Delete site</a>I've tried linking wmt to analytics but nothing changes
-
You need to verify both your www. version and your non www version of your website.
Then go to the non www. version and "Configuration" then "Settings" then choose your preferred domain.

Hi Ian,
You should be able to verify your site in WMT with your Google Analytics code.
On the webmaster tools home screen there will be a button on the right of your screen named "Manage Site". Click this and then click on Verify This Site. You'll be greeted by a page with a recommended way of verification; however, if you have analytics installed you can click on Alternate Methods and select Google Analytics. Google will then check the analytics code on the site against your Analytics account which you are logged in to.
Hope that helps,
K

Site structure headache
Hello all, I'm struggling to get to grips with a websites site structure. I appreciate that quality content is key etc, and the more content the better, but then I have issues with regards to doorway pages. For example im now starting to develop a lot of ecommerce websites and want to promote this service. should we have pages that detail all of the ins and outs of ecommerce - or should we simplify it to a couple of pages. what is best practice? Also isn't a content hub similar to having doorway pages? let me know what you think! William

Switching site from http to https. Should I do entire site?
Good morning, As many of you have read, Google seems to have confirmed that they will give a small boost to sites with SSL certificates this morning. So my question is, does that mean we have to switch our entire site to https? Even simple information pages and blog posts? Or will we get credit for the https boost as long as the sensitive parts of our site have it? Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

Blocking subdomains without blocking sites...
So let's say I am working for bloggingplatform.com, and people can create free sites through my tools and those sites show up as myblog.bloggingplatform.com. However that site can also be accessed from myblog.com. Is there a way, separate from editing the myblog.com site code or files, for me to tell google to stop indexing myblog.bloggingplatform.com while still letting them index myblog.com without inserting any code into the page load? This is a simplification of a problem I am running across. Basically, Google is associating subdomains to my domain that it shouldn't even index, and it is adversely affecting my main domain. Other than contacting the offending sub-domain holders (which we do), I am looking for a way to stop Google from indexing those domains at all (they are used for technical purposes, and not for users to find the sites). Thoughts?

Will sitemap generated in Yoast for a combined wordpress/magento site map entire site ?
Hi For an ecommerce site thats been developed via a combination of wordpress and magento and has yoast installed, will the sitemap (& other yoast features) map (& apply to) the entire site or just wordpress aspects ? In other words does one need to do anything else to have a full sitemap for a combined magento/wordpress site or will Yoast cover it all ? This link seems to suggest should be fine but seeing if anyone else encountered this and had problems or if straightforward ? http://fishpig.co.uk/wordpress-integration/docs/plugins.html cheers dan

What is the best way to find missing alt tags on my site (site wide - not page by page)?
I am looking to find all the missing alt tags on my site at once. I have a FF extension that use to do it page by page, but my site is huge and that will take forever. Thanks!!

Site being indexed by Google before it has launched
We are currently coming towards the end of a site migration, and are at the final stage of testing redirects etc. However, to our horror we've just discovered Google has started indexing the new site. Any ideas on how this could have happened? I have most recently asked for robots.txt to exclude anything with a certain parameter in URL. Is there a chance this, wrongly implemented, could have caused this?

Moving Duplicate Sites
Apologies in advance for the complexity. My client, company A, has purchased company B in the same industry, with A and B having separate domains. Current hosting arrangement combines registrar and hosting functions in 1 account so as to allow both domains to point to a common folder, with the result that identical content is displayed for both A & B. The current site is kind of an amalgam of A and B. Company A has decided to rebrand and completely absorb company B. The problem is that link value overwhelmingly favours B over A. The current (only) hosting package is Windows, and I am creating a new site and moving them to Linux with another hosting company. I can use 301's for A , but not for B as it is a separate domain and currently shares a hosting package with A. How can I best preserve the link juice that domain B has? The only conclusion I can come up with is to set up separate Linux hosting for B which will allow for the use of 301's. Does anyone have a better idea?
