Parent pages
-
Hi guys,
A website has many venue pages, for example:
For some reason the parent www.example.com/venue/ is 301 redirecting to a minor page elsewhere on the website.
Should I remove the 301 redirect and then create www.example.com/venue/ page that then links to all the venues?
My thinking is:
-
Google will expect there to be a /venue/ 'parent' page
-
So if the parent page is redirecting to a minor page elsewhere within the website its telling Google all the venues like paris must be even less important.
Should I do it? Any suggestions from fellow SEOMoz's would be appreciated!
All the best
Richard

Hi Richard, It sounds like the best way to answer your question would be to use an example and think about it from a user point of view.
Let's say you own a hotel site with the following URL structure:
www.example.com/hotels/london - (in your case this would be your www.example.com/venue/paris page)
If I was a user and I now want to see all hotels, it would make sense that the page www.example.com/hotels/ would show me that. If it doesn't and I get redirected to a less important page I would find that strange. Forgetting Google for a minute it's also not good to put users through an internal redirect as it's slower and if users see the URL change it can confuse them.
To summarize, I would remove the 301 redirect and create a category page as it's better for your users and can have a chance of ranking for a category keyword.
I hope this helps,
Craig

Hi Richard, having the vanue info in the /venue/ folder is definitely the options which makes more sense to both users and google. I think that having that content in the venue folder and then linking to all inner pages is the easiest way to both handle your page and analyse the traffic/conversions delivered by the venue related content.

Will google be able to crawl all of the pages given that the pages displayed or the info on a page varies according to the city of a user?
So the website I am working for asks for a location before displaying the product pages. There are two cities with multiple warehouses. Based on the users' location, the product pages available in the warehouse serving only in that area are shown. If the user skips location, default warehouse-related product pages are shown. The APIs are all location-based.

301 Redirect to Home Page or Sub-Page?
What do you think about 301 redirect of good expired domain to a sub-page instead of the home page? I'm doing this so I don't hurt my brand name. Let me know your thoughts please. Thank you

Best way to link to 1000 city landing pages from index page in a way that google follows/crawls these links (without building country pages)?
Currently we have direct links to the top 100 country and city landing pages on our index page of the root domain.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
I would like to add in the index page for each country a link "more cities" which then loads dynamically (without reloading the page and without redirecting to another page) a list with links to all cities in this country.
I do not want to dillute "link juice" to my top 100 country and city landing pages on the index page.
I would still like google to be able to crawl and follow these links to cities that I load dynamically later. In this particular case typical site hiearchy of country pages with links to all cities is not an option. Any recommendations on how best to implement?0 -
How to deal with everscrolling pages?
A website keeps showing more articles when pressing a "load more" button. This loads additional category pages with a page parameter (e.g. ...?page=1, ...?page=2, etc.), as suggested by Google to get all pages indexed. The problem is that this creates thousands of additional, duplicate pages, with a duplicate title, header, and very unfocused content. They also show as duplicate content in Moz. The pages are indexed by Google, but none of them is ranking. What do you guys think: add a no-follow to the load-more button, so search engines will never see them? Thanks for your input!

New Web Page Not Indexed
Quick question with probably a straightforward answer... We created a new page on our site 4 days ago, it was in fact a mini-site page though I don't think that makes a difference... To date, the page is not indexed and when I use 'Fetch as Google' in WT I get a 'Not Found' fetch status... I have also used the'Submit URL' in WT which seemed to work ok... We have even resorted to 'pinging' using Pinglar and Ping-O-Matic though we have done this cautiously! I know social media is probably the answer but we have been trying to hold back on that tactic as the page relates to a product that hasn't quite launched yet and we do not want to cause any issues with the vendor! That said, I think we might have to look at sharing the page socially unless anyone has any other ideas? Many thanks Andy

Getting Google in index but display "parent" pages..
Greetings esteemed SEO experts - I'm hunting for advice: We operate an accommodation listings website. We monetize by listing position in search results, i.e. you pay more to get higher placing in the page. Because of this, while we want individual detailed listing pages to be indexed to get the value of the content, we don't really want them appearing in Google search results. We ideally want the "content value" to be attributed to the parent page - and google to display this as the link in the search results instead of the individual listing. Any ideas on how to achieve this?

How to find pages hardest hit
I have been hearing that panda can penalize a website for low quality pages. I have run duplicate content check and done my best to go through the whole website. I hear many people talking about deleting hardest hit pages, or fixing hardest hit pages. My question is how can I find which pages on our website are hardest hit? Is there anyway to check a website for pages that might score low. We do have a ecom section to the website which I am concerned might be considered low quality for each product page. Any advice would be a great help.
