Duplicate Content
-
Crawl Diagnostics is returning duplicate content/title tags for every product image on listing pages of my classified site because each image is on a separate url.
So this page, for example,
http://marketplace.myclassicgarage.com/cars/all/Chevrolet-Bel-Air/24481/
has, among other things, the same title tag as all this page,
http://marketplace.myclassicgarage.com/cars/all/Chevrolet-Bel-Air/24481/media/151968
which is one of many different images that are all child pages in the folder /media
In this particular case there are over 140 pages with the same title tag because there are over 140 images for this particular car. That is just one listing and there are over 1,000 listings (vehicles) and that number will grow.
Is this really a problem? With limited resources, what real positive effect will making all these images have unique title tags really have from a SERP perspective? Keep in mind this being user generated content, there is no way to descriptively update the title tags to something like <title>Bel Air Passenger Side Profile</title>. That is not feasible.

Hi Jim,

Yes it will help, giving descriptions for your images can also help visually impaired people. I would name all my images, however if theres other content on these pages that are duplicate such as URL string I would recommend adding a canonical code, this will help you avoid duplicate content penalties.
This should help:

Thanks Lynn. I've asked our Dev how painful/painless #1 is as this is a completely bespoke site running Ruby on Rails so no CMS. Hopefully won't hurt too much. Thanks again!

Hi Jim,
What a car!
I don't think there is much point in making unique title tags for each of the images, if the layout stays the same you will still have duplicate content issues even if you change the titles.
What you really want to do is consolidate the content onto one page, and there are 2 ways that should hopefully be pretty painless to do, depending on your CMS:
1. Change your slideshow code so that the images are loaded without changing the url of the page.
2. Use the rel canonical tag so that all the /media/ urls have a rel canonical tag pointing back to the original Chevrolet-Bel-Air/24481/ page.
Either of those solutions should work in terms of avoiding duplicate content issues, I would be inclined to go with the first one myself if feasible.
Hope that helps!

Duplicate Content: Marketing Page / Content Page
So I am getting duplicate content warnings on my website for my pages white paper and webinar video pages. Each white paper / webinar video page is behind a marketing form page that must be filled out. I am getting a lot of warnings that the marketing page and the content page are being picked up as duplicated content. In the past, both the marketing page and the content page were given the same title and url, the body content is not similar. My question: Is the URL / Title similarity enough to set off the duplicate content warnings and would changing one or the other solve the issue?

How Do I deal with duplicate page titles for pages on eCommerce site
Hi We have an ecommerce site selling physical products. There are a few areas where the products run into two pages. I have used canonical meta tags and next and prev meta tags too. Despite this SEOMOZ reports are still displaying these as warnings for duplicate page titles. An example would be /brand_name/range/ <link rel="next" href="/brand_name/range/?page=2" /> <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" href="/band_name/range/"/> /brand_name/range/?page=2 <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">prev</a>" href="/brand_name/range/" /> <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" href="/band_name/range/?page=2"/> Should I be doing something different?

How do I fix a duplicate content error with a top level domain?
Hi, I'm getting a duplicate content error from the SEOmoz crawler due to an issue with trailing slashes. It's showing www.milengo.com and www.milengo.com/ as having duplicate page titles. However I'm pretty sure this has been fixed in the .htaccess file since if you type in the domain with a trailing slash it automatically redirects to the domain without a trailing slash, so this shouldn't be an issue. I'm stuck here. Any ideas? Thanks. Rob

Duplicate page errors
I have 102 duplicate page title errors and 64 duplicate page content errors. They are almost all from the email a friend forms that are on each product of my online store. I looked and the pages are identical except for the product name. Is this a real problem and if so is there a work around or should I see if I can turn off the email a friend option? Thanks for any information you can give me. Cingin Gifts

Redirecting duplicate .asp pages??
Hi all, I have a bit of a problem with duplicate content on our website. The CMS has been creating identical duplicate pages depending on which menu route a user takes to get to a product (i.e. via the side menu button or the top menu bar). Anyway, the web design company we use are sorting it out going forward, and creating 301 redirects on the duplicate pages. My question is, some of the duplicates take two different forms. E.g. for the home page: www.<my domain="">.co.uk

www..<my domain="">.co.uk/index.html
www.<my domain="">.co.uk/index.asp</my></my></my> Now I understand the 'index.html' page should be redirected, but does the 'index.asp' need to be directed also? What makes this more confusing is when I run the SEOMoz diagnostics report (which brought my attention to the duplicate content issue in the first place - thanks SEOMoz), not all the .asp pages are identified as duplicates. For example, the above 'index.asp' page is identified as a duplicate, but 'contact-us.asp' is not highlighted as a duplicate to 'contact-us.html'? I'm a bit new to all this (I'm not a IT specialist), so any clarification anyone can give would be appreciated. Thanks, Gareth0 -
Tool for scanning the content of the canonical tag
Hey All, question for you. What is your favorite tool/method for scanning a website for specific tags? Specifically (as my situation dictates now) for canonical tags? I am looking for a tool that is flexible, hopefully free, and highly customizable (for instance, you can specify the tag to look for). I like the concept of using google docs with the import xml feature but as you can only use 50 of those commands at a time it is very limiting (http://www.distilled.co.uk/blog/seo/how-to-build-agile-seo-tools-using-google-docs/). I do have a campaign set up using the tools which is great! but I need something that returns a response faster and can get data from more than 10,000 links. Our cms unfortunately puts out some odd canonical tags depending on how a page is rendered and I am trying to catch them quickly before it gets indexed and causes problems. Eventually I would also like to be able to scan for other specific tags, hence the customizable concern. If we have to write a vb script to get it into excel I suppose we can do that. Cheers, Josh
