Opensite Explorer
-
It may sound like a stupid question but what kind of likes and shares is Opensite Explorer referring at? Is it just how much your page gets liked and shared or about the posts on FB?
-
Great stuff, glad it helped you out!

Thanks Tim, makes total sense now!

I think there's a bit of yes and no in this.
One of the things that got loads of people excited about Facebook shares was the 2012 Searchmetrics ranking factors report - here are the US and UK reports.
You'll see there that the report puts FB shares at the top of its correlation table - as if to say that pages with more shares ranked higher in Google.
The problem is correlation does not equal causation.
What I've found is that social signals can give your page a good short-term boost for a ranking term. If you're aware of the freshness part of the algorithm that gives a short-term boost to new pages in the search engine results, if those pages also have social signals to back them up, I think you're very likely to see a short-term benefit.
In the long-term, however, there is no substitute for links. In my own tests that have tried to measure the effect of (real) facebook shares on a page vs links, those with good links sustained the rankings. To me this makes sense if you think about it - Facebook shares and other social signals are much more easily manipulated.
What is clear though is that social signals are important - getting a lot of them can help your page to rank in the short-term and if you combine that with authoritative and legitimate links, you're definitely on to a winner.
Always aim to accrue Facebook likes and shares but don't see them as a ranking factor (or just a ranking factor). Someone sharing your page is a pretty strong endorsement for that page's content - if you can increase your shares for your page then you can be sure that your content is on the right track.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Tom,
So how can I use this metric in my advantage?
Google doesn't really count FB shares and likes, does it? -
Hey Sylvana
It's the metrics for the page itself, not the post on FB.

Open Site Explorer backlink results different that MajesticSEO... why?
When checking the number of external links linking to a site, Open Site Explorer and MajesticSEO give completely different results. In one case Open Site Explorer is saying the website has: "49 Total Links" and MajesticSEO is saying the website has: "6,143 External Backlinks (in the last 5 years)" and "497 External Backlinks (in the last 90 days)" Does anyone know why this is?

Site Explorer shows links as followable but they have nofollow tags
Hello, I am looking at site explorer and sites linking to my site moneyfact.co.uk. I've got thousands of links showing as 'followable' but when i check them they have rel="nofollow" tags. e.g: http://www.dianomioffers.co.uk/partner/moneyfacts.co.uk/brochures.epl?partner=93&partner_id=93&partner_variant_id=33 Why would they show as followable when the links are nofollowed? Thanks Steve

Opens Site Explorer sees two pages that are one
www.mysite.com/ and www.mysite.com/default.asp are both showing up in open site explorer. How do I make sure that these are not being interpreted as two pages when they are the same page? (Both in search engines and OSE.)

Open Site Explorer is showing "No Data" for my page titles under the "Top Pages" Tab
This is for my site: www.kibin.com/ Does this mean there is something wrong with how we're titling our pages? We're working on our on-page SEO, titles, meta descriptions this week and getting them up to snuff. I don't understand what is going on here or if it's something to be worried about. Thanks!

Need help with Opensite explorer
Hi, Every time i try to create an advanced report with Opensite it will get to around 4-6k links and then start to finalize the report, however it says i have 750k links aiming at my root domain. I have not used any of the page/domain authority filters, any ideas on why this could be cutting me off? Kyle

Old Incoming Links Redirected to new pages are not Being Factored on the Open Site Explorer
Hi, My website has been online since 1994. We have old links pointing to pages that no longer exist so what we have done is to create redirects to the specific page where the content is being displayed now. However, when we use the Open Site Explorer, the linking root domains do not show those sites that contain old links pointing to our domain. One good example of this one is: dmoz.org. Am I improperly handling the redirects? Or, what do I have to do so that old links that are being redirected to the new pages where the information is are accounted when calculating domain authority and trust? Thanks, Alex

Open Site Explorer Missing URL's
I see a link to my site on a couple different url's, but they are not listed in OSE. The links have been active for a long time too. Does OSE not track all inbound links from all sites? Thanks, Stephen

Why does open site explorer show me Chinese characters?
Hi there, When using open site explorer to check the anchor text for www.bookvictoriafalls.com I see Chinese characters as anchor text. However, when I do the same for www.bookvictoriafalls.com/ I see normal English anchor text. Coincidentally this domain has dropped from first page rankings to outside the top 50. Is this a spam issue? Open-Site-Explorer.png
