301 an old site to a newer site...
-
Hi
First, to be upfront - these are not my websites, I'm asking because they are trying to compete in my niche.
Here's the details, then the questions...
There is a website that is a few months old with about 200 indexed pages and about 20 links, call this newsite.com
There is a website that is a few years old with over 10,000 indexed pages and over 20,000 links, call this oldsite.com
newsite.com acquired oldsite.com and set a 301 redirect so every page of oldsite.com is re-directed to the front page of newsite.com
newsite.com & oldsite.com are on the same topic, the 301 occurred in the past week.
Now, oldsite.com is out of the SERPs and newsite.com is pretty much ranking in the same spot (top 10) for the main term.
Here are my questions;
1. The 10,000 pages on oldsite.com had plenty of internal links - they no longer exists, so I imagine when the dust settles - it will be like oldsite.com is a one page site that re-diretcts to newsite.com ... How long will a ranking boost last for?
2. With the re-direct setup to completely forget about the structure and content of oldsite.com, it's clear to me that it was setup to pass the 'Link Juice' from oldsite.com to newsite.com ... Do the major SE's see this as a form of SPAM (manipulating the rankings), or do they see it as a good way to combine two or more websites?
3. Does this work? Is everybody doing it? Should I be doing it? ... or are there better ways for me to combat this type of competition (eg we could make a lot of great content for the money spent buying oldsite.com - but we certainly wouldn't get such an immediate increase to traffic)?

Welcome to the world of competitive tactics based on real or perceived return on investment, and where ethics is a matter personal belief. Some people believe they matter, others claim ethics are irrelevant, because obviously, they will do whatever they can, in attempts to make as much money by any means necessary as they think they can get away with.

Thanks for the quick reply's... I can see that it's probably not a long term solution, but as mentioned I was surprised how well it's working now.
And because of this, I worry newsite.com will continue to buy and re-direct sites every few months (weeks / years) or however long the results last.

When I run into issues like this It's best not to go outside of the webmaster guidelines for moving a site. (updated 3/20/2011) Clearly they have not applied best practices for user experience and missed a golden opportunity in my opinion. Be grateful that they did. With some more work they could be dominating even more. The similar content issue mentioned in GWT guidelines link above will bite them I'm sure. But like Alan said, when is up to the algorithm.
I would stay the course and make your site the best it can be. The competition and the SE are both out of your control.

It doesn't hold the same value as if every page on oldsite.com were redirected to the proper equivalent page on newsite.com - the long term value would be in links pointing to those redirecting to the new ones, combined with the links pointing to the old site's home page redirecting to the new site's home page.
How much value it gets that will last depends on how many links pointed to oldsite.com's home page. Yet ultimately, if no new signals are generated and newsite.com doesn't build out in depth or spread of keywords, it's going to fall off over time.
Exactly how much time is anybody's guess.
The vast majority of people who do such things do it for the short (whatever that means) term boost, and if there are ads on newsite.com, the clicks on those ads.
Good question as to whether the search engines know about this and if so, how they deal with it. Ultimately they don't say exactly.
In the past couple years I have not heard of anyone doing such things as their primary path to long-term success.
The actual length of time it lasts would definitely depend on the market it's in. Are many other sites actively doing across-the-board SEO - both on-site and off-site? If so, it'd last less time than if the market was relatively quiet.
How long it would take you to bypass newsite.com is also an unknown factor, regardless of method you chose. SEO best practices call for putting in the footwork to do best practices and trusting that over time, you'll see value. And you may or may not overcome newsite.com depending on what they do and the rest of the market.

I want to transfer an old Blogger blog onto my new site
When we first started out our website didn't have a blog and we started one on Blogger. It has loads of great content on it but it was before the days when I understood SEO so it's 4 years old and has maybe 1000 views per blog article. Now I want to repurpose some of that great content and SEO optimise it and put it onto my new site. How do I go about this from an SEO perspective. I am aware of internal competition and will only be using the old blogs that are new topics to start off with so it doesn't negatively impact my rankings. Should I just delete the old blog and re-write it all on the new one or redirect the old blog articles to the new pages and rewrite them? The blogger articles have no links to them and it's just content that I'd like to use. The old blog has almost no SEO value at all but I want to use a best practice approach to not cause any damage to my new blog or have google thinking I'm stealing someone else's content.

301'd site, but new site is not getting picked up in google.
Hi I'm having big issues! Any help would be greatly appreciated This is the 3rd time this happened. Every time I switch my old site greatcleanjokes.com to the new design of chokeonajoke.com traffic goes almost completely down (I even tried out the new design on greatcleanjokes [to see if it was a 301 issue] and traffic also went down.) What can possibly be wrong with this new site that google just doesn't like it ?! I was ranking high up for many big phrase like joke of the day, corny jokes, clean jokes, short jokes. Now It's all gone. I also think it's strange that when I search for site:chokeonajoke.com the post pages show up before the category pages!? Here is the old site http://web.archive.org/web/20140406214615/http://www.greatcleanjokes.com/ Here is the new one http://chokeonajoke.com/ If you can't figure out anything do you know of anyone I can hire who may be able to figure it out?

Site verification in WMT
Hello all, I have a site and I want to set a preferred domain but when I do it says I need to verify my site but it gives me no ideas how to do that. I know that normally you have to do it when you set the account up but I had an analytics account for this domain first then just logged on with those details and I was in with no verification process. Cheers

Without having to contact each site it there a way to automatically sort the links from the old structure www.mydomain.com/show/english/index.aspx to just www.mydomain.com Many Thanks

Why are old versions of images still showing for my site in Google Image Search?
I have a number of images on my website with a watermark. We changed the watermark (on all of our images) in May, but when I search for my site getmecooking in Google Image Search, it still shows the old watermark (the old one is grey, the new one is orange). Is Google not updating the images its search results because they are cached in Google? Or because it is ignoring my images, having downloaded them once? Should we be giving our images a version number (at the end of the file name)? Our website cache is set to 7 days, so that's not the issue. Thanks.

Using DNS & 301 redirects to gain control over a rogue site
I'd appreciate peoples' views on the following please. We have been approached by a client whose website does not rank # 1 for their own distinctive brand name due to this position being taken by a site they had developed for them by an affiliate some years back. The affiliate's site is clearly seen by Google as the definitive site for the brand - being older, having more links & in both Yahoo & DMOZ. The relationship has soured with the affiliate & the client wants to take control of the affiliate site & have it 301 redirect to the 'real' brand site. The affiliate won't cooperate (funny that). However whilst the client doesn't have control over the affiliate's website, they do own the domain. Given this, it seems that an option is to temporarily create a 1 page website on another server, change the affiliate website domain DNS settings to point to this, & in turn have that 301 re-direct to the client's website. This is a bit of a round about approach, but necessary because the affiliate won't directly 301 the site they control - despite the client owning it. (As I say the relationship has soured). If you think there's a better alternative approach to this problem (aside from litigation), I'd appreciate hearing it please. Thanks.

301 Redirect?
Sometimes I want to redirect pages on my site. Like a search result: http://www.inthelighturns.com/memorials/catalogsearch/result/?q=hearts to a page designed for what they're searching for: http://www.inthelighturns.com/hearts.html There's no real worry about transferring page rank and this may not be a permanent redirect. Just a "I want this page to show this page for some time" kind of redirect. What's the best solution? Thanks Tyler
