How to change the entire contents and design in my site without getting troubles with google?
-
Hello everyone
This is my first post over here.
In the next few weeks we going to change the entire content and design in our site. The site has 240 pages with poor contents and design.
Except 301 redirects for all the old url’s I wanted to consult with you what is the right way to do it without harm my organic traffic that come from google?
How google refers to this kind of changes?
Which steps should I need to take to do it properly?
Hope to get your help in the issue.
Tahnks in advance.

Hi,
If you change content, design and URLs in the same time you won't be able to assess the reason behind an improvement in rankings or a negative effect in rankings.
Let's say you change all 3 in the same time and you get a slight increasing rankings - you will be happy but the setup behind this is that the content change had a huge positive impact and the design and url changes had a negative effect - you only see the final end result - this is just an example.
The bottom line is that you can get the best out of it if you do it step by step as you can adjust, roll back, edit in order to get the best out of it.
The last change I would do is the URL change and always have a fix and clear procedure in place for this as it is important (if you have some visibility now and the risk of losing something is big).
Cheers.

First of all thank you very much for your replay.
Why I can’t just made all the changes in one shot?
About the url’s, Unfortunately our current status requires us to change them because they are really not friendly ; )
What are you suggest to do about that?

Hi,
If you improve it : design (usability) and content - Google will be the happiest and it will rank accordantly (the only "but" is that - it needs to be a real improvement).
The only golden rule I would follow is - do not change the URLs. If you really really want to change the URLs too do that on a later stage not during the content and design changes. When you do that - just update the old 301 redirects to the new format and add new 301 redirects for the "current" structure to the "future" one - don't use 301 redirect hoops - this is really important.
Best case scenario in my view:
Step 1: Update content only, wait for changes to be visibile: rankings, traffic, CTR etc - track result, assess feedback from all platforms available: seomoz, Web master Tools, google analytics etc etc. Doing this you will see exactly how much of an impact had this content update.
Step 2: Update design - similar with step 1- assess, track, analyze. See how much impact this usability had on the numbers, engagement etc. Use Split A/B testing from Google Analytics to see what version is better and decide based on your users engagement not on your personal preferences.
Step 3: update URls - only if really really needed.
Wait for some time between those steps - based on the size - a few weeks, a few months.
Be ready to roll back if disaster strikes on any of the steps...
Hope it helps as an outside suggestions.
Cheers.

Changing Platforms & HTTPS Same Time
Hi Everyone, We know this is a bad idea. Our owner purchased another website/company and we plan on moving it to Shopify. The site is a very old (not been updated in 4 years) Able Commerce site. My developer whom has been doing this for years with me couldn't get the current host to work with us in order to move the site to https. Looks like we would actually have to spend a lot of money to update the site in order to. So my question is this. If we move the site over to Shopify, they make it https right away. I am out of luck trying to redirect http pages to specific https pages? Jeff

URLs appear in Google Webmaster Tools that I can't find on my own site?!?
Hi, I have a Magento e-commerce site (clothing) and when I had a look through some of the sections in Google Webmaster Tools I found URLs that I can't find on my site. For example, a product url maybe http://www.example.co.uk/product-url/ which is fine. In that product there maybe three sizes of the product (Small, Medium, Large) and for some reason Googlebot is sometimes finding a url like: http://www.example.co.uk/product-url/1202/ has been found and when clicked on is a live url (Status code: 200) with is one of the sizes (medium). However I have ran a site crawl in Screaming Frog and other crawl tests and can't seem to find where Googlebot is finding these URLs. I think I need to: 1. Find how Googlebot is finding these urls? 2. Find out how to keep out of index (e.g. robots.txt, canonical etc.... Any help would be much appreciated and I'm happy to share the URL with members if they think they can have a look and help with this problem. I can share specific URLs which might make the issue seem clearer, let me know? Thanks, Darrell

Subscription Video Content
I've never used video other than embedding youtube videos. This time I want to host my own with encryption for the subscriber content and sample videos for general consumption. Would love any pointers at all. I would also like the content to be streamable on ipad etc. What platform would you use (adobe etc) and why? I don't want to start out on one road to discover down the line that it sucks for SEO. Obviously the subscription content will suck since it will only be available to logged in users, but the rest..... In a nutshell I want to know how to host video well for SEO and make it shareable, but with the option to also have some of the video content subscription only. (should have put it like that to start with probably.)

http://www.buypropertyanywhere.ru/property-details.php?lang=14&pId=14659
http://www.worldwideproperty.in/property-details.php?lang=14&pId=14659 Would it be best to push buypropertyanywhere as the main site and left the others drop or to develop buypropertyanywhere with each country as a mini site within it and use the existing urls for example www.housesalesbulgaria.com and 301s to direct back to the mini site ie www.buypropertyanywhere.com/bulgaria. Thanks in advance0 -
Responsive Vs Mobile Sites
I know this is some cutting edge technology, but I think that this will be a very important topic in the coming months, as html5/css3 becomses more and more the standard, or at least standardized, I think the topic of this in relation to SEO will also arise much more. My question is simple, is it better to code a responsive site, or a completely mobile site for a small company with no special needs (mobile ordering, ecommerce, etc...) I obviously know the visuall differences, and, personally, I think respomsive websites look better. From an seo perspective, my big thing is for the resizing, for example, with WordPress, when you reach the tablet size you can set the sidebar to basically display:none, can that impact your website? I would really appreciate any feedback

Duplicate content.
Hi there....we're dealing with a duplicate content mess. We're a franchisor(www.kitchensolvers.com), and each of our franchises have their own landing page. The trouble is, the way the landing pages are set up, it's causing all the links available on the national level of the website to be re-indexed each time for every franchise! We don't have an in-house developer and was wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and point me in the right direction.
