How to Explain Admin Access To Client Who Denies It to Anyone Inside or Outside?
-
Hi ,
I am on a new project for a great prospective client. After a company split the IT dept says, "Our IT Infrastructure team doesn’t provide admin access to anyone (internal or external) to any of our servers/sites for security, maintainability, and quality reasons. We would be more than happy to install and configure any software you would like and provide you read access to any output you might need."
I am not aware of any such software. Or what help "read only access" is to getting tasks accomplished. Tomorrow am I meet with four others on the project that I am to assign SEO tasks to. Everyone wonders how to accomplish marketing tasks, web redesign and SEO tasks efficiently? They are told to drop by new content on a backupn CD.
My contact has asked that I am permitted access... what can one do when IT says "no?"
-
Nice work! It's always great to hear success stories and gives us a little more inspiration to keep up the communication until we get what we want;-)
-
For a quick follow -up. After several meetings, I have been able to explain my efforts and how it will move their project forward. We seem to have built a new level of trust and the admin access has been granted. Lots of extra hours to get here, though. Thanks for all of your great advice.

Thanks! All your thoughts prepared me for a meeting with the business owner today and the head of IT. They have determined to set up a Dev site and give me access to it. Then they will move updates to the live site. Has anyone worked this way? Tips on how to best manage it?

Wow, that is really a bad situation and sounds like you are going to be very limited. When I mentioned limitation, I was referring to things such as Google Analytics Admin. Some of the platform sites have their Google Analytics account Admin, but will not give Admin and GWMT access to 3rd parties (marketing agencies). They package in Analytics with their platform monthly rates and set Analytics to mail a report to the client each month. I have had developers refuse to add a video sitemap. I have had some that gave me access to their site backend, but it was hosted on an IIS server and required them to do the manual 301 redirects, and they refused to do this. These are just a few examples of "limitations" I have seen.
Having said that, I really feel your pain here. In your initial question, you called this a "great prospective client," but it is not a great situation as there seems to be a bad breakup with residual bad internal politics. Without knowing your entire situation, here are my recommendations based on what you have mentioned so far:
Option 1 is to not accept the project as it might be too draining and time consuming because of the company politics.
Option 2 is to start by placing proper expectations with the person hiring you - sounds like you have established a good relationship with them. You have to let them know how important on-site optimization is and how the IT dept seem to be unreasonable. Without onsite optimization, your entire campaign is going to be inefficient - it will take a ton more work offsite in order to get results and it is not ideal. Even blogging sounds like a serious pain in that it has to go to a test server first, then you have to wait for an IT person who doesn't "get it" to approve. You should also consider raising your rates because of the situation. This is not typical, so your typical rates that you may have quoted may no longer apply now that you know the whole story.
Anyway, good luck with this. I hope it works. I would love to hear how it plays out.

It is good to learn that some of you work in this manners as my experience has been largely with having full admin access. Tim, what "are some limitations" you have found this way?
I have offered to train those with access by walking them through what they need to do verbally, including meeting with them initially in person as needed to ensure they understand how to complete the steps successfully. However, as I understand it after this new three-way company split, all the higher level and "cutting edge" IT are gone. The remaining staff is working hard to learn those positions and has no or little bandwidth for such training.
They use one path for all internal and external help who blog, add photos, redesign pages or any form of updates: all are done on a test site till approved by the IT staff, then placed on a CD, driven or mailed to their physical address, and IT uploads the new content into a "rolled back" version of Joomla (Joomla-253-released.html).
Therefore, unfortunately, I will be unable to use schema metadata, just one downside.
They seem unsure of time or budget for follow-up communication or documentation from IT. As I understand this is where the "installing software to give me read only access" is meant to give "output". I can audit already through many SEOmoz and other tools. Is there such a software? Would it work as a communicative documentation of completed tasks?
I agree with your "just work through it" and "no point in doing all the work". My concern is the project manager/my contact's take that IT in this case is like an "unnecessary barricade" and is asking me to proceed by way of "software solution discussions". They seem to be seeing SEO conclusively as something similar to a WordPress Yoast install for an old Joomla platform.
How do you suggest building trust with a "barricaded team"? They seem worn and now face competing with their former peers/lead staff who are all well ahead according to Site Explorer's comparison tools.

Yes, as Cesar stated, this is not uncommon, and you can push the tasks to them. Over half of our clients' sites are on platform based sites and their developers do not give us access. While there are some limitations, we provide them with a nice zip file with paint by numbers documentation of what we need them to do.
Just put together your strategy exactly the way you would if you were going in there to do it yourself. Spell each item out so that it cannot be misinterpreted. I always include a READ ME FIRST file that explains the content of the zip folder. Once you send the file, schedule at time to verbally go over it and confirm that they completely understand your instructions for them. A lot of the times, you will get a grumpy response as they just don't get why these things are so important to you. Just work through it. Find out what they may not be able to do and problem solve to find the work-around. Have them send you documentation once they have completed the tasks. Do an audit and make sure everything meets your satisfaction. Keep the paper trail (email trail) of everything saved, just in case...

Are you referring to making edits to their website for SEO purposes?
If so most companies will outline in a Doc what they need to do and you leave it up to them to get those tasks done.
No point in doing all the work

Can Someone explain why this site ranks #1 and #2? I am confused.
Hi everyone, Here is my problem. This site: https://247ride.com/town-cars/ ranks for bunch of really good keywords. Such as lax car service, car service to lax etc. The keyword does not appear in Title tag, and only partially on meta description. The site's DA is 23 and PA is 22. Less than 29 links overall, and linking domains 8. Why in your opinion Google is ranking this page #1 and #2 for many competitive keywords. I know it's a hard question to ask but any input would be greatly appreciated. I am working really hard to rank for same keywords and so far i am at #11 position. Thanks in advance, Davit

Outside Top 10 Even though - Higher Domain/Page Authority/Higher On Page Grade
Hi, Note: this is for Australian search results - for people in Perth.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | HeadStud
The website is: http://thedj.com.au I am trying to optimise for the keyword 'perth wedding dj', but also 'wedding dj perth' and for some reason my website isn't even in the top 10 results. Here is what's weird though: My on-page grade with the On-Page Grader for the keyword 'wedding DJ perth' is an 'A' for http://thedj.com.au (http://awesomescreenshot.com/0135135hca) When checking the Keyword Difficulty in the Google Australia search enginge for 'wedding DJ perth' - there are 4 results which have a lower domain authority than 15 (in fact one result has a domain authority of 1) - http://awesomescreenshot.com/03f5134zd1 http://thedj.com.au has a Domain Authority of 23/100 and a Page Authority of 34/100. (http://awesomescreenshot.com/0bb5134tb8) So seeing as the page has gotten an A for on-page optimisation for the keyword 'wedding DJ Perth' and has a higher domain authority then many results in the top 10... why isn't it in the Top 10?! Bonus Question:
Why is DJ Avi showing up at the top of search results (Local listing) depsite the fact that:
a) He has no website to link to
b) No reviews for his listing
c) No keywords that I can see (other than the fact that he's a DJ)

Keyword Strategy for outside of the US
I posted a similar question a while go, so I will attempt to articulate my question a little better.... I am the owner of an E-Commerce site that operates in Canada. I have been brainstorming ways to find opportunities and niches for Canadian online shoppers in an industry that is dominated by corporate American E-commerce sites. I saw another Canadian e-commerce site try to combat this issue, and I wanted to get some advice on whether this strategy is sound. Here is an example. Well.ca is a large e-commerce site in Canada. They take a competitive product like a "Tide Lundry Detergent" and include local and intent terms in their page titles. For example "Buy TideLaundry Detergent from Canada at Well.ca - Free Shipping". If a Canadian shopper searches for "Tide Laundry Detergent", they are going to find results for amazon.com, ebay.com, Tide's website, etc.. I would imagine that Canadian shoppers would start to add terms such as Canada, Buy, or online to try to find Canadian sellers. If that is the case, then Well.ca ranks and arguably serves the customer with those intentions much better. I guess my question is, if the dominant search terms in my industry are polluted with irrelevant or American companies (even in Canada), is this form of localization a good idea? The terms don't seem to be searched much according to any keyword research tool I've used, but I know that I add "canada" to my search terms in order to find Canadian results? Thoughts?

Alternative Markup Challenge. Can anyone help?
I have a challenge around alternative markup. We currently operate a single domain with geo-targeted folders and alternative markup implemented. We are now now looking to expand this out to non-English content. Current Implementation; All generic English language content hosted on the main domain, with x5 English language content variations (locales) available under a folder structure (.com/en-us/ etc.). Alternative markup is in place for all locales within the HTML, implemented automatically by developers via the CMS. Locale folders geo-targeted via GWT and Bing WT. Planned Launch; Introduction of 5 new non-English locale folders (e.g. /de-de/ etc.), targeted to their respective country and language. Content language will be mixed, with around 1/10 of pages translated and the other 9/10 of pages (business listings) having their body content remain in English, with headers / footers translated. Locale folders will be geo-targeted via GWT and Bing WT. Folder and markup usage TBC. Options; Folders; Implement folder structure /de/, attempting to indicate country but not language (issue; usually a single identifier indicates language, not country?). Implement /de-de/ folder structure to match the English locales and maintain correct country targeting (issue; some content is not in language). Alternative markup; Do not make use of markup at all. Implement CMS based automated markup on all English and non-English content throughout the locale (e.g. /de-de/), but exclude English language versions (e.g. /en-gb/). Attempt manually implementing markup to bridge the English and non-English locales, potentially creating future issues with new content going live and content being removed. A heavy risk. Current approach is webmaster tools targeting, a /de-de/ folder structure and automated implementation of markup. This means English language URLs will have markup and non-English language URLs will have markup, but they will not match up (e.g. English pages will never have markup for non-English language content). If you minds haven't melted, what's your thoughts? Any help is much appreciated.

Client hell bent on grabbing a competitive .net domain
Hi all, Firstly, i'm a content guy! Thrown into SEO at the deep end, but absolutley loving it and the community. I need some advice, so i'm popping my cherry with this one: I have a client who is in the service industry, very competitive and in a City, so it's all local. He has branded site that has had little investment in SEO and a huge PPC spend over the years. After a lot of nagging they are getting the message that PPC is a massive money tap and as soon as it's turned off that's it - gone! They have had conversations and hit me up with this as their want. Example: They see www.londoncakebakers.com / .co.uk which is a site belonging to Smiths Cakes. They have spotted that www.londoncakebakers.net is free to purchase! You know what's coming right? They want to buy it, get me to design a site for it and deploy SEO on it in a big way! The key phrases are all in the domain name and all the obvious benefits. Am I over thinking this and should embrace it, or should I advise, no, no, no? Thanks in advance. Mark

My website keywords have been almost completely taken out of indexing in Google since 04/26/11 and I cannot determine why, anyone know?
I had 12 to 15 1st page Google rankings in the iPhone, iPad, app review vertical. As of 04/26/11 I have lost all rankings, traffic has gone from 1,000 to 1,200 a day to 150 to 350 a day. I was using a plugin for auto press releases, but have removed this and deleted the urls. I also have changed themes and hosting over the last 3 weeks. I have been trying to get SEO help, but cannot seem to get anyone to help me. thank you Mike

Does anyone know if certain DMOZ categories are blocked/never get indexed on google?
Hi all, After waiting many months I was happy to see a certain site listed on DMOZ, then months later still haven't seen the dmoz category indexed in google. It makes me wonder if certain categories don't get indexed or blocked or even previously penalized by google. The category in question is a regional one : http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Jersey/Localities/G/Garfield/Business_and_Economy/ Anyone come across this before? Dave
