Best way to fix a whole bunch of 500 server errors that Google has indexed?
-
I got a notification from Google Webmaster tools saying that they've found a whole bunch of server errors. It looks like it is because an earlier version of the site I'm doing some work for had those URLs, but the new site does not.
In any case, there are now thousands of these pages in their index that error out.
If I wanted to simply remove them all from the index, which is my best option:
-
- Disallow all 1,000 or so pages in the robots.txt ?
-
- Put the meta noindex in the headers of each of those pages ?
-
- Rel canonical to a relevant page ?
-
- Redirect to a relevant page ?
-
- Wait for Google to just figure it out and remove them naturally ?
-
- Submit each URL to the GWT removal tool ?
-
- Something else ?
Thanks a lot for the help...

If you already fixed the error, then just wait for Google to figure things out on their end. Having those errors in GWT isn't going to hurt you.

Wouldn't you be showing 404's instead of 500's in the first place?
If the old URL's are still showing in the index, I'd reckon you'd want those 301'd to relevant pages anyways, at worst, at least a resource-heavy 404 page popping up rather than a 500.
-
4/5 with a bit of 7
What you need to do is return the correct response code (I'm guessing that is either 404 or 410) then let google reindex those URLs. That way Google knows that those urls are no longer valid. However, if those URLs have links or get traffic then you might want to 301 them.
Let's look at a couple the other options though - it is interesting.
-
This will stop google re-visiting those URLs,Therefore it will always think they are there.
-
No index confirms they are there, but tells google not to return them in results. Again this isn't correct and they will continue to return to and re-check those URLs
-
Unless the content is very close, this is unlikely to work. It is also wrong (because presumably they are not the same thing)
-
If they URLs have a common (and exclusive) directory it may be an option to submit that. It might though not be a good idea to submit lots individually - Matt Cutts has suggested this in the past.

Can Google index the text content in a PDF?
I really really thought the answer was always no. There's plenty of other things you can do to improve search visibility for a PDF, but I thought the nature of the file type made the content itself not-parsable by search engine crawlers... But now, my client's competitor is ranking for my client's brand name with a PDF that contains comparison content. Thing is, my client's brand isn't in the title, the alt-text, the url... it's only in the actual text of the PDF. Did I miss a major update? Did I always have this wrong?

What are best options for website built with navigation drop-down menus in JavaScript, to get those menus indexed by Google?
This concerns f5.com, a large website with navigation menus that drop down when hovered over. The sub nav items (example: “DDoS Protection”) are not cached by Google and therefore do not distribute internal links properly to help those sub-pages rank well. Best option naturally is to change the nav menus from JS to CSS but barring that, is there another option? Will Schema SiteNavigationElement work as an alternate?

Site indexed by Google, but (almost) never gets impressions
Hi there, I have a question that I wasn't able to give it a reasonable answer yet, so I'm going to trust on all of you. Basically a site has all its pages indexed by Google (I verified with site:sitename.com) and it also has great and unique content. All on-page grades are A with absolutely no negative factors at all. However its pages do not get impressions almost at all. Of course I didn't expect it to be on page 1 since it has been launched on Dec, 1st, but it looks like Google is ignoring (or giving it bad scores) for some reason. Only things that can contribute to that could be: domain privacy on the domain, redirect from the www to the subdomain we use (we did this because it will be a multi-language site, so we'll assign to each country a subdomain), recency (it has been put online on Dec 1st and the domain is just a couple of months old). Or maybe because we blocked crawlers for a few days before the launch? Exactly a few days before Dec 1st. What do you think? What could be the reason for that? Thanks guys!

Spike in server errors
Hi, we've recently changed shopping cart platforms. In doing so a lot of our URL's changed, but I 301'ed all of the significant landing pages (as determined by G Analytics) prior to the switch. However, WMT is warning me about this spike in server errors now with all the pages that no longer exist. However they are only crawling them because they used to exist/are linked from pages that used to exist. and no longer actually exist. Is this something I should worry about? Or let it run its course?

Changing the city of operation and trying to know the best way of informing Google
We are having a business operating out of three cities A, B and C with A being the primary address and the business provides its services in B and C as well. Business has decided to shut shop in C and instead add D as another city. Currently the URLs are like www.domainname.com/A/productswww.domainname.com/B/productswww.domainname.com/C/productsPlease help us in understanding the best way to inform google that City C is non operational now.Do we need to do the redirects, and if yes, should we do the redirects to Home Page?Or can we just remove the C city URLs from the webmaster tool and inform Google.

I have a few categories - for example: flats, houses etc. Url of category looks like that: mydomain.com/flats/?page=1 Each category has about 30-40 pages - BUT in Google index I found url like: mydomain.com/flats/?page=1350 Can you explain it? This url contains just headline etc - but no content! (it´s just generated page by PHP) How is it possible, that Google can find and index these pages? (on the web, there are no backlinks on these pages) thanks

Best way to handle with a Multiple Langue Issue
Howdy everyone! I am having trouble with deciding on how to solve a Multiple Language Issue. I went to several consultants here in Mexico, but i am not totally convinced on their solution. So i am hoping to hear excellent advice (as always) here on the SEOMOZ Forum. I have a website, (www.aceromart.com) an ecommerce site in which to sell materials for the construction industry. My main market is in Mexico, therefore the website is in Spanish. However, the export sales are increasing and some of the suppliers are from USA. I need to include the English version on my website, however i dont know how to do this. The option that they propose is to create an entirely different website with another domain. Entirely in English that links to my existing website. I did not like this at all. Mainly because i would not like to change the brand name or anything. I would like to include the English version within my website. Is it okay, if treat it as a folder withing my website. I.E www.aceromart.com/english/content? What is the best way to do this according to your experience. Best Regards, thanks for your help.

Magento - Google Webmaster Crawl Errors
Hi guys, Started my free trial - very impressed - just thought I'd ask a question or two while I can. I've set up the website for http://www.worldofbooks.com (large bookseller in the UK), using Magento. I'm getting a huge amount of not found crawl errors (27,808), I think this is due to URL rewrites, all the errors are in this format (non search friendly): http://www.worldofbooks.com/search_inventory.php?search_text=&category=&tag=Ure&gift_code=&dd_sort_by=price_desc&dd_records_per_page=40&dd_page_number=1 As oppose to this format: http://www.worldofbooks.com/arts-books/history-of-art-design-styles/the-art-book-by-phaidon.html (the re-written URL). This doesn't seem to really be affecting our rankings, we targeted 'cheap books' and 'bargain books' heavily - we're up to 2nd for Cheap Books and 3rd for Bargain Books. So my question is - are these large amount of Crawl errors cause for concern or is it something that will work itself out? And secondly - if it is cause for concern will it be affecting our rankings negatively in any way and what could we do to resolve this issue? Any points in the right direction much appreciated. If you need any more clarification regarding any points I've raised just let me know. Benjamin Edwards
