What are Spammy Back Links
-
My site was hit by Penguin 2, where I lost 40% of traffic. People keep talking about spammy links but I've made none of those for my site. So how can I analyse my site and find out which links are hurting me. Can it be done with SEOMOZ software? What do I look for?
I used Site Explorer and most of my links are to relevant websites. Is there a penalty for being in somebody else's blogroll even if I was added naturally and their site is a high ranking (PR4) and relevant site? All the links to my site coming from forums are no-follow. Could it be my own website? How do I check that? I have no clue what to look for.
Thanks

Thank you all. Those articles helped. Time to do some research on my links.

Uesat,
I like Michael's response, looks like he put some effort into what he provided. I just wanted to add a point that might help you, and perhaps others concerned about the same thing.
We have used a company called Link Research Tools. They charge for their service, but I have found it invaluable. They may be found online here http://www.linkresearchtools.com Their spider will index your site for all of the inbound links, then report back on the possible impact of the link. The report provides all sorts of data about the inbound link, if it is indexed by Google, webmaster contact information, number of links that the inbound links receives, inbound link subject matter. You get the idea. They also suggest if the link is possibly impacting negatively on your ranking.
Hate to admit it, but this report can also be run on your competitors website, which may help you discover new quality links to go after or avoid for you own website. They even provide an automated Disavow tool.
Check them out

Great question, and I would suggest you check out the following Moz posted article by Ron Medin "How to Create and Excel Spreadsheet to Remove Link Spam Post Penguin".
Hope this helps, and good luck with your recovery!

This is a good question. I think "spammy" needs to be defined since sites like ours, up for many years, have links in numerous places that cannot be "fixed" because at the time there was no such thing s "nofollow" and the like. To punish for old links would seem harsh although it might be done. Our problem is that we're listed on long pages of "link resources" that many are saying is spam and penalty but this is what was done in the 90s and 2000s by people wanting to put up useful websites. Here are a few I saw on possibly relevant articles that appear knowledgeable:
- http://www.searchenginejournal.com/googles-penguin-beginning-to-flex-its-muscles/63416/
I find Barry's articles very helpful and ostensibly honest: http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-on-upcoming-penguin-panda-link-networks-updates-151273
To begin, it's difficult for anyone to tell you what the problem is with your site without providing your site. It's a horrible feeling (I know) but that will give you the best answers, unless you prefer to pay for that privacy by hiring an SEO consultant to manage the issue. You may want to post some of the links here if you don't want to post your site and see what the group says. Regarding blogrolls - another issue that affects the 2000s and it's crazy for Google to think we can "clean" that which never really needed cleaning and only the large companies with staff will survive. Hopefully there will be clarity. Best of luck.
PS - If it makes you feel any better, your traffic drops are small in comparison to some others.

Links to Your Site: No Data Available in Google Search Console
The site I am working on did not have their site submitted to Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools). I submitted the site and a sitemap that auto updates. Google is crawling the site daily (about 30 pages a day). Under Search Traffic > Links to Your Site it shows no data is availible. I thought it was because it was a newly submitted site, but it has been two months now. Moz seems to have the same issue. Moz does show inbound links, but their are some that we think should really help us that are not shown. For instance, the Dallas Morning News wrote this article. They have a high DA and PA. Also, iliveindallas.com has an article about us that is still on the front page. That was a few weeks ago but also does not show up on Moz or Google SC. We are trying to be selective about the links we are getting. That they are follow links from reputable sites. Worried that both Google and Moz are not showing them.

Reclaim lost links to old pages?
We recently moved our site to a new CMS and did a complete redesign, with new content. It's really hit our SEO. Open site explorer is telling me there are lots of 404 web pages which were basically old product pages that no longer exist, since the way we have structured the site has changed. So is it worth trying to reclaim these links? If so, how can I do that without building pages at the URL - will a 301 redirect be enough?

Redirecting back to initial redirect.
Hello, I have an example site A.com that is currently being redirected to site B.com. My client is having issues with B.com and finding that there is more equity in site A.com. The client now wants us to have A.com as the site. What is the best way to proceed with implementing A.com without hurting search in the long run, since A.com was initially a 301 redirect to B.com. How should I proceed in this redirection back to A.com What pitfalls should I look out for that could affect SEO and how should I input safegaurds to protect myself? I appreciate the support

My domain authority is 1, and I am not seeing any links to my site.
I know that there are links to my site, but nothing shows up. My website is www.mullinsgeoffrey.com. I have tried with and without the www. I am using wordpress for this site, but competitors are as well, and there authority seems fine. is there a hidden setting somewhere that is screwing things up?

Number of links shown in history report are going down?
I'm looking at the link history for my site and 3 competitors I am tracking and for all sites External followed links have dropped by about 40% over the last 2 months. Has anyone else seen this with their sites? What would be possible reasons for this? Thanks,

Missing Juicy link finder
Hello, In the past, I was using two tools mainly: Keyword difficulty and the Juicy link finder. Buit Juicy Link Finder does not exist anymore and I miss it 😞 Any of you are missing it also? Do any of you who were using that tool have found a new tool to do the same good job than what Juicy Link Finder was doing? Thanks Nancy

Need to find all pages that link to list of pages/pdf's
I know I can do this in OSE page by page, but is there a way I can do this in a large batch? There are 200+ PDF's that I need to figure out what pages (if any) link to the PDF. I'd rather not do this page by page, but rather copy-paste the entire list of pages I'm looking for. Any tools you know of that can do this?
