Website, webshop and blog. Subfolders or subdomains?
-
Hello fellow mozzers,
I've seen a lot of discussion and confusion about whether you should use subfolders or subdomains when you have a website, a blog and a webshop.
Of course with subfolders the PageRank will be more effective since it's all in one domain. On the other hand subdomains will be a better user experience since you can focus on just the webshop or just the blog.
Was wondering how you guys/girls think what would be the best way to handle this.

Hey Wesley,
Sub-directory will be a good option. You can find more info http://moz.com/blog/understanding-root-domains-subdomains-vs-subfolders-microsites
I also like the common sense approach. Is your blog part of your site? Yes? Then have it as part of your site. Are you going to write around the topic of your products and services? Yep, Great. Then have it as part of your site so you can link them when natural to do so.

DEFINATELY subfolders.
If they are going to affect your SEO, you want to avoid subdomains as each subdomain will be treated as separate and irrelevant from others with regards to link juice and authority build up
you may have to work a little harder this way to achieve similar user experience to sub-domains, using things like geolocation services instead, or even making your site socially friendly and personalized with SSO and so on, and you may have to change your web design around this as well by incorporating navigation buttons or breadcrumbs in proper locations to enhance or organize user experience. In the end, for most situations, subfolders will pay off far far better in the long run, especially for new sites who need heavy SEO work. Down the line and when traffic and authority are established, you can always switch to subdomains and not care about SEO anymore, with proper 301s and other mitigations.

Hi Wesley,
I am new here, but I believe I can answer this one. As of the end of 2012, according to Google's Matt Cutts, brands using multiple subdomains will no longer receive the SERP advantage and subdomains and subdirectories are now both classified as internal links. Cutt's is recommending that you choose the structure that is easiest for you to maintain. Here is the YouTube video for more explanation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MswMYk05tk
I hope that answers your question.
Thanks,
Christine DeGraff

Subfolder cannibalization
Hello, I looked through the forum but couldn't find an answer so here is my question: A client have 2 subfolders that are selling the same things for example Furnitures, Office Furniture, Bedroom Furniture, etc. The website looks like this : www.website.com/subfolder1/ www.website.com/subfolder2/ But it's like 2 diferents brand, just that it sells the same kind of product. The company wants to put evereything in subfolder1 and stop the subfolder2, which mean stop the second brand. But the thing is that right now the subfolder2 have better positions in SEO than subfolder1 for most of the Keywords. How could I make all the internet traffic goes from the subfolder2 to the subfolder1 ?

How many pages should be on landscapers website
Hi Guys, We have a good website strong onsite and offsite seo. A year ago, we had a 15 pages website for all main keywords we needed and we were on top 3 for most of these keywords in google. We were happy but we wanted more.. So we created lots of unique content targeting long tail keywords and created 100 more pages for the website. In next 4-5 months we lost positions for almost all our main keywords but got lots of longtails SERPs. Trafiic grew but the quality and the conversion rate shrinked. Everybody keep saying that it doesn't matter how many pages you have on the website as long as content is unique and I don't think it is true. I see lots of 3-5 paged websites without any seo in top 3 results in google. Does it mean that if I delete all these 100 pages that I created I will have more chances to get my main keywords SERP back? Basically does the seo juice that you have on domain is spreading across all pages and the more pages you have the less juice every page will get?

Best SEO format for a blog page on an ecommerce website.. inc Source Ordered Content
Does anyone know of a page template or code I might want to base a blog on as part of an eccomerce website? I am interested in keeping the look (includes) of the website and paying attention to Source Ordered Content helping crawlers index the new great blogs we have to share. I could just knock up a page with a template from the site but I would like to investigate SOC at this stage as it may benefit us in the long run. Any ideas?
