No-Follow Comments from 2010
-
An old SEO consultant left a lot of comments with exact anchor text links on non relevant blogs back in 2010.
At this point most of them are no-follow, but I'm obviously still concerned they are damaging. Is the no-follow enough? Or should I still work to remove them? Is the time worth the effort?
Thanks,
-
I just looked at my organic traffic since 2009 (ugh, not the trend you like to see).
The biggest drop was in April 2011 (Panda 2.0 (#2))
There was a small drop but immediate recovery in December 2011 (Panda 3.1 (#9))
Another drop in June 2012 (Penquin 1.1 (#2))
Another drop in September 2012 (Don't really know - Panda updates 3.9.1 and 3.9.2)
It's been steady/slowly increasing since then.
The comment (and other) spam links are in the hundreds or thousands (By my best estimation)
What do you think? Obviously, I need more good and less bad, but do you have any advice on what/where to focus?
-
Penguin isn't a manual penalty, it's algorithmic. See if your traffic drops correspond to previous Penguin releases:

I'm not sure how extensive this comment spam, but unless it's on the scale of hundreds or thousands it's probably a good idea to just ignore them, and focus on things that will have a positive impact on your SEO, such as creating new contents and building new links.

Thanks for answering.
We haven't been manually penalized, but have definitely seen a drop in nearly every important ranking.
I was under the impression that the disavow tool will just tell Google to mark them no-follow anyway. It's not like they are going to manually remove them or anything. Am I wrong?
-
Have you been hit by Penguin? If not, then don't worry about it. If you have been hit, then you can disavow the links in Webmaster Tools.
-
You shouldn't worry about them if they are marked with nofollow.
Nofollowed links will not damage your rankings because, as the Google's support page says, the nofollow attribute "means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links".
Cheers!

Lost backlinks following switch from http to https
I have a client who appears to have taken a big hit in a few areas recently: MOZ Domain Authority has dropped from 16 to 1 In ahrefs, their http version has 103 backlinks from 46 referring domains, but the https version shows 'no data' for backlinks or referring domains Their 'average position' in SERPs has fallen from around 32 to 43 in the last six weeks Ininitally, I thought this might be due to the MOZ indexing problems last month. However, I now suspect this is connected to their switch from http to https, which occured in mid December. Although all the http pages appear to be redirecting, it looks like the backlinks are not being associated to their https version. Anyone had experience of this and/or now how to remedy?

Value / Risk of links in comments (nofollow)
Recently I noticed a couple of comments on our blog that seemed nice and relevant so I approved them. The site is wordpress and comments are configured nofollow. We don't get many comments so I thought "why not?". Today I got one and noticed they are all coming from the same IP. They all include urls to sites in the same industry as us, relevant sites and all different. Looks like an SEO is doing it for various clients. My question is what is the value of these nofollow links for the poster? Are these seen as "mentions" and add value to Google? And am I better off trashing them so my site is not associated? Thanks

Rel Canonical and Rel No Index, Follow
Hi, Cant implement rel next and prev as getting difficulty in coding - tried lot for same, but to no luck... Considering now rel=canonical and rel noindex, follow to 2 sections Deals and Discounts - We have been consistenly ranking on first position for over 1.5 yr, however recently slipped to position 4,5 on many keywords in this section URL - http://www.mycarhelpline.com/index.php?option=com_offers&view=list&Itemid=9 here, the page content for page 1 and 2 pertains to the current month and from page 3 to all other pages pertains to previous months. Is adding up rel canonical from page 3 to last page to page 1 - makes sense & also simultaneously add noindex, follow from page 3 to last page News & Reviews Section - Here, all news & article items are posted. Been the links of news items are primarily there. However, the pages are not duplicates, does adding noindex, follow makes sense here URL - http://www.mycarhelpline.com/index.php?option=com_latestnews&view=list&Itemid=10 Look forward for recommendations to implement the best - to gain SERP, avoid duplicate and white hat method.. Many thanks

Is it bad to no follow all External LInks at the same time?
I am working on more than 40 EMDs. They are good quality brand sites but they all are interlinked to each other through footer links, side bar links. (and they dont have much of linking root domains) Now Some of those sites have been renovated with new templates and these new sites has very few external links (links going out to our own sites) but some of these old sites has 100s of external links (all these external links of course link to our own sites). But anyways, we are planning to no follow all those external links (links that are linking to our own sites) slowly to avoid penalty? question is, can it be bad to implement no follow to all those links on those sites at the same time? Will Google see it as something fishy? (I don't think so) Also, Is it good strategy to no follow all of them? (I think it is) What you guys think ?

Is using twiends.com to get twitter followers considered black hatting?
Hi, I've been struggling to get followers on Google Plus and Twitter, and recently stumbled upon twiends.com. It offers an easy service that allows you to get twitter followers very quickly. Is this considered black hating? Even if Google doesn't consider the followers as valid, am I likely to be punished if using their service? Even if it doesn't help rankings, it is nice to have lots of followers so that they will see my tweets which has the potential to drive more traffic to my site, and give awareness to my business. What are your thoughts?

Influence of users' comments on a page (on-page SEO)
Do you think when Google crawls your page, it "monitors" comments updates to use this as a ranking factor? If Google is looking for social signs, looking for comments updates might be a social sign as well (ok a lot easier to manipulate, but still social). thx
