Social Media Links
-
I cannot seem to find the answer through my research. Can somebody tell me if social media links to a website are taking into consideration by Google? For example, if l have a video on my website and post the link on my facebook page, when other people share it do more and more links get created? Are these picked up on open site explorer?

You've stumbled on a very big question is SEO. Unfortunately there's no right answers, just lots of nuances.
In the traditional sense, most social links and mentions are not handled the same way by search engines as traditional links. We do know that Google takes social data into account, and there is a high correlation between content that is highly shared and content that ranks well, but we don't know exactly how search engines use this data.
Think of it this way: when you post your video on Facebook and people share it, that means more people are talking about it and you have a change at more attention, links and mentions. These are all things search engines are looking for, and there's a good chance you'll rank higher. But it may be more of an indirect effect than a direct one.
The one exception may be Google+, which is structured different than other social platforms. Post on Google+ pass both PageRank and anchor text, and post shared there actually "count" as a link, as far as I know.
So the answer to your question is yes and maybe. Social links may be taken into consideration by the search engines, but typically not the same way as traditional links.
Facebook doesn't share all their data with Google, for the most part discourages robots, and you won't typically find posts in Open Site Explorer. That doesn't mean the links don't count, but in the traditional sense they don't carry the same value.

Social Media: Industry with no apparent engagement?
Hey Mozzzzzzzzzzzzzzers! I work for a high end rehab. We have a Facebook page with 800 fans, twitter with 5,500 followers, and a linkedIn with around 1,000. I noticed that the previous CEO probably bought our twitter followers, so that explains our minimal engagement. The part I am having a hard time grasping is that all of our competitors, including the big guns in the industry are struggling as well. I see numbers like these all the time: 30,000 facebook fans with posts getting 5/6 likes and a comment here and there. 7,000 twitter followers with every 10th tweet getting 1 or 2 favorites, a RT is a blue moon Experts in the industry with high blog views, high credibility in their field, huge fan base, and engagement like the engagement above. If I look back since 2005, we have accrued 250,000 hits on our website... 236 are from facebook. Our best month was last year in December and I honestly can't figure out why, there was nothing done differently. I am a firm believer that if there is no audience then it's not worth the time. That being said, I can't help but think we are all missing something in the addiction field. I guess my questions are: What do I do in an industry where there appears to be minimal engagement across the board? (Dr. Drew doesn't count.) When do you/have you decided to cut your losses on social media and just use it as a place to have representation and not as a place to drive profit? Is there always a way to get engagement? Do you believe some industries are just doomed? (That's an unfair question isn't it?) Anyway, just food for thought. Would love to hear your opinions! I also would love to know about any marketing and or social media forums you all participate in that I can direct some of the more social media/marketing specific questions towards. I don't want to make things too convoluted. Thanks everybody!

Does a 301 retain social actions
I just changed the domains on one of my largest and oldest sites for branding reasons. I have the 301 set to keep the page structures and all. My question is will the "likes" and shares and etc be kept via the 301 or will they have to be reacquired?

Various question re SEO and social media
Hi all: It is time for my semi-annual “I don’t have a clue” question. Actually it’s questions since there are three although they may overlap. I am confused about the intersection of social media and SEO. A couple of years ago it seemed like one of the better procedures for link building was writing articles and having them published on Isnare, Goarticles Ezine and the like. Now I am not sure if this is effective anymore. It seems like all of the emphasis is being put on social media sites. Not just Facebook, Twitter Pinterest, and blogs, but big ones (that I don’t have a prayer in the world of getting on) such as Mashable, Reddit etc. How are my efforts best served at this point? Should I still submit articles to article directories or should I concentrate on guest blogging (which isn’t so easy if you want a reputable blog) or try something that I can’t even think of? Second, my blog is a Wordpress Blog that is no big deal and probably isn’t read much. It can be accessed either at Wordpress or through my site. It is listed in my Google Merchant Account, but I can’t imagine anyone reads it. It’s about gifts and products that we sell and is not going to stimulate anyone’s mind. Two things here: First (and I don’t know if anyone will know the answer to this) my site is hosted by Yahoo. There is a tab at the top of my site that takes you to the blog, but Yahoo also has some way to integrate the blog with the website. Does anyone know if this will make any difference? Second, the last several times that I ran by backlinks on Open Site Explorer my Wordpress blog has not shown up. It always did previously right at the top. Any guesses as to why it no longer shows? Finally, in the last couple of months I have had a precipitous drop in orders and visitors to my site. The only thing that I have done is to lower my budget for Google Adwords, but it was never that high to begin with and shouldn’t account for the change. Given the holiday season traffic should be picking up but it is going in the other direction. Does anyone know what is happening here and what to do about it? Anyone with really good insights might get a gift certificate from us (is that permitted on SEOMOZ – if not then forget it). The website is www,uniquegiftsanddecor.com. Here’s a thought – buy stuff from us. (ignore if this is spammy). Many thanks. Don

Has anybody else noticed that Google has made a significant change to their SERP? There is a lot of social data reported from LinkedIn, Youtube and Facebook (includes page likes and activity) when you search by company name. Thoughts anybody?

What is the best social backlink checker available right now?
I want a tool that i can enter a domain into and get all the social backlinks available. Preferably the tool that keeps the most recent database of this information. I'm willing to pay for the tool, it does not need to be free. Not sure if i'm using the right terminology here, by "social backlinks" i mean Facebook Shares, Twitter RT's, Google +'s, etc.
