Changing URLs to include a fixed identifier or ID
-
The Scenario: I got pages that I need to track, located in a domain, within several folders. Adding a common identifier or ID (eg. www.domain.com/folder/page-name-identifier.html) in those URL's will ease my work so I would be able to select, in Anlx, all traffic including URL's with that specific identifier. URL's for which track is needed lack this identifier today.
My Plan: add identifier (7 letters fixed and common for all URLs) to those existing pages and 301 redirect from old to new URL's
My Question: will this change of URL's and redirections SEO-hurt me in anyway?

I agree with Andrew. If you use GA, custom variables are the way to go. You can actually put several parameters onto a page and have them in plain English without have to have a bunch of crazy stuff in the URL. We use this on a site and it works quite nice.
What is great about this too, is that since this is all in GA and if you have goal and goal values setup you get all types of insights into what are the most valuable categories etc on your site.
If you do need to change the URL, setup the 301 redirects from the old URL to the new URL and you should be fine, especially if you have a 1 to 1 relationship with those 301 redirects.
One thing to consider, we have setup urls for articles etc that read like this
www.domain.com/folder/######-page-name-slug-here.html
The ###### is a ID number for the content that we use internally in our CMS. We are then able to use the ###### as a fail safe in the URL structure if there is some other error in the url when it is types in or linked to
for example
www.domain.com/folder/######-page-name-
www.domain.com/folder/######-page-name-slug-here.
www.domain.com/folder/######-page
www.domain.com/folder/######-page-nam
www.domain.com/folder/######-Page-Name-Slug-Here.html
www.domain.com/folder/######-page-name-slug-here.htm
We setup our system so that if any of the examples wrong URLs occur above, the system can use the folder and the ID to always 301 redirect to
www.domain.com/folder/######-page-name-slug-here.html
As we have the ID as the absolute identifier. We have found this helpful with the inevitable issues that may come up with an incomplete URL.
Good luck!

In theory, nothing should change and it should not hurt your SEO, but there's always some risk involved whenever you start redirecting pages. There may be some authority that's lost or Google may take some time and shuffle things around for a while. So, I would consider if there are other options. If you have good rankings for these pages, see if there's another way that you can track the traffic in a reliable way before you go messing around with 301 redirects. If it's the only way to track what you need to track, then what you're planning should work in theory.

Howdy!
Instead of messing about with URLs, have you considered using Google Analytics custom variables?
They're quite simple, and may make your life a lot easier: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/gajs/gaTrackingCustomVariables
Kind Regards,
Andrew

Should I change my permalink structure?
Hi guys, hope you've had a manageable working week. Just after some advice! What would you think to changing the permalink structure of an already established entertainment website so that the category and postdate also appears in the URL, i.e "2014-01-01/news/this-is-the-post"? I have done it before without thinking about all the crawl errors it would cause and quickly reverted everything. However, I am now eager to get listed in Google News (don't worry, this isn't the only reason to change the URL) and think it might help things overall. Thoughts? Worth the effort or a pointless exercise?

Weird 404 URL Problem - domain name being placed at end of urls
Hey there. For some reason when doing crawl tests I'm finding pages with the domain name being tacked on the end and causing 404 errors.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Jay328
For example: http://domainname.com/page-name/http://domainname.com This is happening to all pages, posts and even category type 1. Site is in Wordpress
2. Using Yoast SEO plugin Any suggestions? Thanks!0 -
SEO is changing - how has your day to day changed?
I'm sure we all read on our alternatives to Google Reader that SEO is changing - "here's what we must do to be relevant in 2014". I find these articles boring and uninformative. I suspect I'm not alone. The reason I'm not their biggest fan is because I feel like I've invested 10 minutes into an article that I have no actual guidance from. Therefore, I thought I'd ask the real SEO's, you guys, what has actually changed for you? Are you now not creating content with the aim of getting links? If you run a commercial website, what are you doing different to rank your product pages - directly or indirectly? Please share with the group. I'm sure many like me are still brainstorming and creating content they think will grab people's attention and gain them links, whilst also pushing their Facebook, Twitter, Youtube profiles, etc etc. What has changed about this?

How do I fix my sitemap?
I have no idea how this happened, but our sitemap was http://www.kempruge.com/sitemap.xml, now it's http://www.kempruge.com/category/news/feed/ and google won't index it. It 404's. Obviously, I had to have done something wrong, but I don't know what and more importantly, I don't know how to find it in the backend of wordpress to change it. I tried a 301 redirect, but GWT still 404'd it. Any ideas? And, it's been like this for a few weeks, I've just neglected it, so I can't just reset the site without losing a lot of work. Thanks, Ruben

Changing your URL? Impact on rankings?
I have been thinking about changing our webadres for quite a while but I'm too afraid of the impact on my SERP. I understand I would need to use the Google Change of Address tool & 301 redirects. Am I missing something? What is your experience with changing the URL of a website? How has this impacted your SERP? In the past I heard someone say it will damage the linkjuice by 20%. Is that accurate? If you change the URL, is there a blank period of where your old site nor your new site are indexed? Or does Google handle this transition well?

Time for Google to change the emphasis?
Why doesn't Google recommend that links are nofollow as standard, via HTML5, etc., with follow being added if the link is on a quality site (defined by PR, or whatever.) and adds value. Wouldn't this save alot of time? Then they could whack all the sites with coding that doesn't comply, couldn't they? Also, instead of enabling negative SEO, why doesn't Google simply focus on wiping out the sites developed simply to pass on PR. I'm sure we could all send them a few thousand suggestions!

Automatic redirect to external urls
Hi, there is a way to create a "bridge page" with automatic url redirect ( 302 ) without google penalization? In this moment, my bridge pages are indexed on google with title and description of the redirected page.. Thanks in advance. Mauro.

Does URL format affect Keyword effectiveness for a URL?
I am looking at our site structure, and don't want to have to rebuild the way the site was linked together based on it's current folder structure so I am wondering what option would work better for our URL structure. I will uses car categories as an example of what I am talking about, but you can insert any category structure you like. For example I would like to have pages like this: www.example.com/ford-convertibles
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | SL_SEM
www.example.com/chevy-convertibles But instead due to the site structure I will need to have pages like this: www.example.com/ford/convertibles
www.example.com/chevy/convertibles But wonder if I shouldn't do the following to ensure the proper phrase is known for the page: www.example.com/ford/ford-convertibles
www.example.com/chevy/chevy-convertibles The "/ford/ford-convertibles" just seems odd to me as a human, but I haven't seen anything on how well a keyphrase in a URL split by /'s does and I know dashes for phrases are fine. This means I am inclined to go with the"/ford/ford-convertibles"style because it keeps the keyphrase separated by dashes even if it is a bit repetitive. There will be other pages too like "/ford/top-10-fords-ever" but I don't wonder about that since it isnt "ford/ford-xxxxx" Thoughts on whether /'s in a keyphrase are as good as dashes?0
