Having a second homepage for a site would affect my SEO?
-
Hello guys,
One of our clients is planning to have a new landing page for any users hitting the site for the first time. (returning users will still see the current homepage based on cookies ... in other words, the site would technically have 2 home pages). According to this client, they are planning to do something like this:
- https://www.websitename.com/ (for returning visitors)
- https://www.websitename.com/newuser (for first time visitors)
Our instinct is that is not great to have 2 home pages (that would affect the SEO campaign we are managing for this company) and we are not sure how to handle this. That's why we would appreciate your opinion regarding this topic:
- From an SEO perspective, do you think this is a good idea?
- If not, what would you guys do differentiate first-time visitors vs returning visitors without affecting SEO? Maybe just a pop-up?
Thanks in advance for your help !

Here's my take:
First, basing user experience on cookies isn't always the best experience. Folks change browsers throughout the day (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop) and they often browse privately and/or clear their cookies. This means LOTS of folks will be landing on the "first-time" page when they are actually returning visitors.
But if you can live with this, fine.
From an SEO point of view, where are you directing bots like Googlebot that don't accept cookies? Will bots see the "new visitor" page? Do you want bots to see the new visitor page? (sorry for so many questions, but I don't know your objectives - but these are important questions to think about)
Overall, it's typically best to have a consistent experience between bots and visitors. If this means javascript popup for folks without a cookie set, this might be the best option (but still not ideal, because popups can negatively effect visitor usage and satisfaction metrics, like bounce rate)
If this is something you have to do, I'd go with the popup, but first I'd try to talk the client out of it

Hey Robert,
In my point of view that sounds like a landing page which as far as i know is perfect.
It actually helps visitors don't fall with there faces to many information that they don't need to know and confuse them.
Check out this article on Moz which is kinda old but for me still correct.

Hope that helps.

How to correct error in customized posttype WP site
Hi folks Can anybody help me. I foolishly, dogedly followed a Lynda.com tutorial for developing an 'online portfolio in WP'. Little did I know that my initial assumption - to use the 'twenty twelve' rather than the 'twenty eleven' theme would land me in such deep water. I was attempting to learn php on my own. All went well, until, --- the index page for the customized post type. Now I have two beautiful customized posttypes, 'companies' 'coverage' and no idea how to create an index page for either. I can't do the next step! I have tried every permutation - changing the permalink settings, changing them back, desperately searching for any handle to the nebulous links within the menu section. The only thing I can do (and have done for now) is to link the menu item 'company' and the menu item 'coverage' to a single post. Then the poor visitor has to scroll through the posts individually. I tried contacting the tutor and Lynda.com, to no avail! I have searched forums and found this is a common problem, but because I am so confused and novice to php they might as well be speaking Chinese. To compound my problems, looking through 'Wordpress SEO' for Yoast, I am painfully aware I can't go to the first basic step and fix the peramilinks to 'Postname' as that just makes my flakey menu collapse like a pack of cards. Help!

Is there any negative SEO effect when using Wordpress for your Blog?
I have a site entirely done in html, no CMS used. The blog page however, is wordpress. Wondering if this will effect us negatively in terms of SEO, having the blog that is linked to our site, a wordpress site. My gut is absolutely not, but the questions was asked....what do you think?

Given the lastest Google update, should I rewrite my Flash site or try to present an alternative HTML/CSS site?
I have a site that was created using Flash. The reasoning behind this was, at the time, that I didn't care if the site ranked or not (portfolio site). Now I would like to drive traffic to the site from SE's. Given the Penguin update, should I rewrite my Flash site in HTML/CSS or present an alternative site for bots and browsers that don't support Flash? My concern is that by presenting an alternative site to bots and non Flash supporting browsers that the SE's will see potentially see this as cloaking. Thoughts and advice would be much appreciated.

I am gathering examples of great SEO'd sites and would appreciate your examples. The rationale can be anything - great SEO structure, great linking, solid content - you think stands out. Thank you!

Wordpress SEO Change of Structure
Hi, I have a Wordpress SEO Question. I ran the SEOMOZ checker on my website and it discovered roughly 70 of my 250 blogs had a URL length problem. I have removed the year and month from the WP structure as I read elsewhere that it is not important. The blogs displayed as follows: domain.com/blog/2011/02/contents-of-the-blog and the new structure is: domain.com/blog/contents-of-the-blog I have resubmitted the new structure to Google Webmaster Tools XML and updating the on-page sitemap on my main site. My blog was cached on 25th October and seems to be caching every 7 days, my website cached on the 24th and I wonder if I should do any follow up work to ensure the content gets crawled properly. a) Individually 301 redirect the old URLs to the new. b) Individual Canonical links for each. c) Adding the old pages to the robots file and disallowing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
