Accurate Google Keyword Ranking for a domain
-
Hi Folks,
SEO N00b here, in a new job so please go easy on me if i ask stupid questions. I'm looking for some clarification on Google Keyword rankings. I am looking for accurate Google Keywords rankings as when I log into Google Webmaster Tools I am given values like (6-10) for a ranking?
When I used SEOMoz (Research Tools -> Keyword & Ranking -> Rank Tracker) it gives me an even less accurate range by simply saying >#50?Why is SEOMoz giving a completely useless metric? Why is its actual rank not shown?
I know rankings are becoming less useful as a metric with Google moving toward personalized search but I still have reports to deliver to clients so the conversation of what metrics are going in the report is to be had another day. Right now I just want to get accurate rankings, from what I've found online Google Webmaster tools is recommended as the de-facto ranking tool but it doesn't provide accurate results so how can that be (yes I know it averages out the ranking but 6-10 is a range of values not a single value that represents an average)

Hi Guys,
Cheers for the feedback, much appreciated - for a while I thought I was loosing my mind or just being a n00b. I have inherited the Power SEO Suite rank checking tool so at least I now have a consistent perspective on the rankings but I would like to use multiple sources so I will look into the Advanced Web Ranking software you mentioned Karl. Im in a similar position as yourself Allen with Google being the primary focus.

Hi Ciaran,
Welcome to the SEO world!!
Moz's ranking software shows you were you rank, the >50 you mentioned is how much it has risen/dropped since they last crawled the website. I use Advanced Web Ranking for my keywords, its not free but does as many keywords as you like. However, if you are only managing 1 account then use Moz's ranking tool

Ciaran,
Don't forget when looking at GWMT that is a one sided view of the world. Meaning that you are only getting reports from Google, about Google, and their view of the world.
By using MOZ you are receiving a more balanced blend of the world as they see it. So I would suspect that if you used Bing webmaster tools you would notice as we do yet a completely different opinion. That's not all bad thing, its like getting different peoples view on a discussion point.
In our demographic Google is the 800# gorilla. So we base our decisions skewed towards Googles WMT and temper our efforts on what others sources are saying about the metrics.

How to check if a domain has been penalised before I buy?
I guess the question is in the subject. We have a client that wishes to buy a domain and use it to replace the primary URL on their website. Although the domain is currently not in use, it was back in 2002 until about 2010. We're concerned that this could cause issues if we change the name over and the domain itself has had penalties in the past

Google has a penalty on my website? How to resolve?
I recently purchases Moz pro, hoping to find out why my website isn't ranking on specific keywords. I'm done analytics on myself and my competition and it seems that I rank better than them on 95% of the categories (using OpenSiteExplorer and keyword research tools). So I purchases Moz Pro hoping I'd find the glaring error in my ways. I found a few small issues I was having, and have dealt with them. Overall however, they were small issues, and have led me to believe Google as a penalty in place for my website (SEO friend have also suspected this). In my Google Webmaster tools, nothing is marked under Manual Actions. So does anyone have a way to contact Google and have them directly look at my website to insure there is no errors in their system?

Ranking Tool
We are considering purchasing your complete suite. Our question is regarding your Ranking Tool. We currently subscribe to Market Samurai and they provide us with keyword ranking abilities tied to our internal pages. Our domain, www.wklaw.com has hundreds of internal pages. (86 areas of law, each with 5 pages). will your ranking tool match our keywords to our internal pages? or does it only provide us ranks for the main domain? Thank you.

Why does SEO Moz say we are ranked lower than appears on Google Searches?
We are currently ranked 18th for the Sydney Vet keyword in SEO Moz ranking tools, however in organic Google search we are ranked third. This search was conducted without Googles personalised results feature. Is this just an error? Or does it have something to do with Google Places not being counted in SEO Moz ranking tools? Any help would be much appreciated.

Is there a way to pull ALL rankings for a site for a set of keywords?
I'm fairly new to SEOMoz, and am looking for a way to pull all rankings for a site with the keywords I've listed, not just the top ranking. So for instance if my site ranks for the keyword "widget maker in MO" in two spots. The current rank report will only show me the top result. I know I can click on each keyword individually and see a full list of the top 50, but I'm looking for a more automated way of doing this (I'm the only SEO at my agency and time is an issue). I previously used Advanced Web Ranking and the tool would like me pull a CSV of the top 30 sites for each keyword I was tracking and then I could just search for my site and pull those results easier. Anyone know of a shortcut or report I should use? Thanks!

Keyword Canibalization!
I have a page and it's ranking for a keyword. I placed an internal text link with that keyword as an anchor from that page to that page. The pages is linking to itself. Why on-page report card sees that anchor text link as a cannibalization link? Another problem that i cannot resolve about keyword cannibalization is that the same tool sees cannibalizing link for different kw. Ex : I have a page/category about shoes. From that page i link with anchor text links (the name of the anchor is the name of subcategory ) to subcategories which are men shoes, women shoes, kids shoes, etc. Now, why those links are seen as a cannibalization links for the keyword shoes?
