Is it possible to export Inbound Links in a CSV file categorized by Linking Root Domains ?
-
Hi,
I am performing an analysis of the total inbound links to my homepage and I would like to have the total amount of inbound links categorized by the Linking root domains.
For example, the Open Site explorer does offer the feature to show you the Linking Root Domains to your page. Then when you click on the first Linking Root Domain, it also shows you the Top Linking Pages ( Which means all the pages that link to your page from this particular top level domain)
Now I would like to export this data to a CSV file, but open site explorer only exports the total amount of top level linking domains.
Does anyone has a solution to this problem ?
Thank you very much for the help in advance!

You are correct. Excel should be able to match on that example or one similar to it. You may need to do some reading within the Microsoft help pages to see how it uses regular expressions (for example I dont know if you need the asterisk in your query). Just mess around with the function and you should be able to figure it out.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts CleverPhD.
Since the Domain Authority is the same for every link that springs from the same root domain, I already thought to use the given Domain authority in order to create a separate list.
However, different linking root domains can have the same domain authority. Thus, If I would like to summarize all links from one domain automatically I will have to establish a extended function that relates the domain authority to the text (name) stored as URL.
For example:
DA URL
18 http://blog.moneymanagedproperly.com/?cat=8
18 http://fulano.info/wordpress/?m=201008
I was wondering how to do this without creating a single function for each root domain (for example = COUNTIF(B2:B3;" =http://blog.* "
I am keen to know what are your thougts on this example?
-
There is logic built into Excel that allows you to both COUNT and COUNTIF or COUNTA
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/countif-function-HP010069840.aspx
If you are wanting to count the total number of domains you can setup a function to count non blank cells
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/count-nonblank-cells-HP003056101.aspx
=COUNTA(A2:A6)
This would count non blank cells from A2 though A6.
You can use this also to count if you have a value that is greater than a given number. Say you wanted to see all the linking domains with a DA greater than 20
=COUNTIF(B2:B7,">20")
You get the idea. Note that you may need to format your number cells as Numbers to get this to work.
You should be able to use one of the logic functions above in Excel to get you what you need.

Thank you for the answer Chris!
Yes that is correct, by sorting the spreadsheet by the URL simply from A to Z I can extract a list of all links from a particular root domain. However, then I will still have to manually (or automatically) count the links. This can be time consuming.. I was wondering if moz.com relate links to each other and export this..

Arne, isn't that something you would do after it is downloaded by sorting your columns in your excel or google docs spreadsheet? Your download contains all the same data as you see on the screen, ie. linking root domain, domain authority, and linking root domain. Is there something else you're trying to do?

Root domain change - how do we best handle existing backlinks from our own content platforms on youtube, etc?
Hi, we have recently changed our brand name after 7 years and have changed our root domain to match (33shake.com since 2012, now 33 fuel.com) The site is the same (no migration to a new one) as there were no other business changes apart from the name/domain. 301 redirects are looking after all former 33shake.com links, which are now being redirected to their new 33fuel.com equivalents (slugs are the same in 99% of cases). My question is: We have a lot of backlinks for our old domain (33shake.com) on our own content via our YouTube channel (100+ videos) and also our podcast (64 episodes in, broadcast on 10 platforms). For maximum SEO benefit as we continue to restore domain authority, etc to 33fuel.com, are we best to leave these historical backlinks pointed at the old domain and let the redirects pick them up when people click? Or are we better off swapping all of these old historical backlinks so they point directly to the new domain? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, this is quite a maze we are now picking our way through! Warren

Recently re-built our site and changed domain. Now I want to go back to old domain - it it a bad idea?
About a year ago I rebuilt our website and changed our domain name. We rent villas in Tuscany, we used to be 'invitationtotuscany.com'. Then I started doing the same in Provence, and in the italian lakes, so i had further sites called invitationtoprovence.com and invitationtotheitalianlakes.com. But maintaining them was awkward and I wanted to have one site. So I put them all onto invitationto.com and did 301s from the old domains and sites. Now I'd dropped off organic search results and I've also realised that invitationto.com is far less clear as a business address. My inclination is to go back to invitationtotuscany.com - Tuscany is still 80% of our business and have the other areas in there too - optimised for SEO for Provence etc. I'm being told its a really bad idea to change domain, 301 the old one, and then revert to the original domain. But I'm suffering anyway, so I wonder if I sjhouldn't just bite the bullet. A lot of my old good backlinks still point to invitationtotuscany.com (BBC, Sunday Times, etc) and the DA is 33 against 22 on the new one.. All help gratefully received! : )

301 Redirect for 3 Domains into 1 New Domain
So I wanted a quick sanity check on the htaccess syntax for migrating 3 domains into 1 new domain. For example, we're migrating 3 sites abc.com, def.com and ghi.com, all into 1 new site on ghi.com. Here's the htaccess we're placing on the root of ghi.com: redirect 301 http://www.abc.com/wines.html http://www.ghi.com/wines redirect 301 http://www.def.com/trade.html http://www.ghi.com/trade

redirect 301 http://www.ghi.com/winery-tours.html http://www.ghi.com/visit/taste On the DNS side of things, we're parking abc.com and def.com on the ghi.com server. I'm not seeing examples of htaccess files for this scenario, and none that use any domain info on the "from" side of the redirect 301 syntax. Any suggestions before we pull the trigger? Thanks!0 -
Change of domain name?
Hello, We are currently developing a new site for an existing online clothing retailer. The existing site is on a .co.uk domain, however we are targeting a global market and wondered whether we could/should launch the new site under a .com address and whether this would be beneficial? Most of our back links come from Affiliate blogs and we could quite easily change these to the new URL. Thanks Bilal

Two blogs on the same domain
I have had two blogs on the same domain for a while now, and it just occurred to me that no one else seems to do this and maybe it's even weird. http://www.stadriemblems.com/blog/

Too many links on my site
Hi there everybody, I am a total SEO newbie and i am burning with questions. I had my site crawled and found out that it contains too many links. The reason is that it is a site where I constantly write news and articles and each one of them is a new Joomla item, thus a new link. I actually thought lots of content is good for SEO. How am I supposed to reduce the link amount?

Link Building Advice
Hi Everyone, I have just joined the community and am looking for some help regards Offsite SEO and Link Building. I have done some basic SEO on my website 'Marketing Quotes' Added to web directories (although I am told they do not carry much weight) I have written content and articles around them (on ezine, squidoo etc.) I have written unique content for the site I have done guest posting on blogs Not sure what to do next though for high power links. I did notice a Q&A on contacting webmasters and asking for links (after building a relationship) but wondered if there was anything (offsite wise) that I have missed out? Appreciate any advice. Regards, David

Preserving Link Value
My client has an existing domain, domain A. They recently purchased and absorbed another company with their own domain, domain B. For marketing purposes company B will be rebranded as company A. They want to redirect domain B to domain A. The problem is that company B has by far the more visible domain, with 4x the number of inbound links. If I redirect domain B to domain A, what will happen to these links? I'm thinking their value will be lost.
