How Does Google Treat Date Ranges For a Specific Keyword or Query?
-
How are date ranges interpreted by Google - ie if you type "1993-2003" does Google know 1995 is incl. and should be referenced for a query? What is the best practice for an ecomm site when it comes to a landing page for multiple years? Should be list out each year (looks spammy, "2003,2004,2005...), go with a full range (1993-2003 ), or is a two digit range suffice (88-95)?

Hello Andrew,
It sounds like you're asking about how you should format your on-page factors to rank for searches in which people are typing in a specific year, or range of years. If this is the case, I think you will need to include each of the years. When I search Google for a date range as part of the query (not as part of an advanced search, more on that below...) it shows me exactly what I typed in. So if I search for "shoes 2005-2009" I get pages for that exact date range first, with some single year results for 2005 and/or 2009... but without any 2006, 07, or 08 results.
If I search for "shoes 2006" I don't get any of those 2005-2009 results, and instead get results from only 2006, or those with 2006 as part of the listed range (e.g. 2006-2007, 2004-2006, etc...).
In other words, when searched like that it just treats the date/s as part of the query like any other number - meaning you'd have to include that date in the on-page optimization.
However, a searcher can search within a custom date range on Google by going to Search Tools --> and changing "Any time" to "Custom range", then selecting the range from the calender. This isn't going to show those pages that are "optimized" for the dates, but rather the ones that were discovered by Google on those dates.
If you give us a little more detail about what you are trying to accomplish, what types of products you have, etc.... we may be able to provide more assistance with regard to best practices surrounding date-based archives/campaigns/products Vs "evergreen" landing pages that are frequently updated.
Good luck!

Weird Page switch for a keyword in Google Rankings
Over this past weekend Google switched the page which usually showed in search results for keyword benchmarking. It went from from http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking to http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking-portal/osb. Also on Google the Rankings for the keyword 'benchmarking' sank from 15 to 47 for http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking Just looking for some theories or ideas or anyone that has had this happen to them.

One word Keywords
Hey as you know that as a seo we are, we always optimize keywords which are at least 2 words, and lets say I'm trying to optimize a page for terms like "man clothing, man london clothing, man great collection, man stylus collection" and as you can guess I optimize this pages for this keywords by inputting them into title heading tags and body.

So my question is , what if google takes "man" phrase from my 2 words keywords, and pretend as a my keyword. (I mean what if google thinks my keywords is man because as you can see in all of the keywords "man" is in all of them.)
And what if Google thinks the density of "man" probably would be %20 which is astronomic number.? Sorry for my bad english.0 -

Worth removing keywords...?
I was just going over a site I manage and noticed it had a load of meta keywords on it. Probably 10-15 keywords per page... Do you think this is harming the site? Is it worth removing them?

How does Google treat menus that are opened with hovering?
Hi All, As far as I know, Google also gives "importance" ranking to pages based on the number of clicks from the homepage that it takes to reach them. The question I have is How Google treats menu items that are revealed only with hovering / click? Menu Items such as the SEOMoz Blog that can be reached when hovering "Community" here in the top menu. Is it an equivalent to the Q&A Forum? Would it be the same if the menu would have opened with a click instead of hovering? Thanks

My domain name contains my top two keywords. Am I penalized if I create another page where I add my domain key words a 2nd time after the domain name along with a subcategory and the name of a state. I don't know what white hat and black hat is so I want to make sure I stay white hat. Also I didn't know it but is it true that your title shows up in your domain name?
