.png vs .jpg - Which ranks better or does it matter?
-
Hi Moz community,
I am working on a SEO project (ecommerce) and most of the images on the website are .png and I notice they do not rank but yet the .jpg do. Do you recommend I change all the .png to .jpg? They all have alt text and keyword filenames (no spam
Here is the website www.moldear.com.ar. Notice the swimming pool coping tiles are .png and the swimming pool images are .jpg. I cannot get the coping images to rank for some reason
Thanks
Carla

Thanks Lynn,
I see what my issue is. I need to rename some with more generic keywords...

One thing that I want to chime in about and discuss is image size and image compression and optimization for speed purposes, as images are a significant factor in the page load time of the site. + Image optimization helps with site load speed.
Just a little different between the two types: PNG is better for crisp images with a low number of colours, and JPG is better for a low-bandwidth image - however it is not as crisp and therefore not very good to be used for the layout of the website. Â Generally, JPG is for photos and pictures, whereas PNG (or GIF) is for website layout or for computer generated graphics.
Great resource here which is better for image compression and/or optimization if its of interest.
Not directly important to ranking but important in general sense of ranking.

the cleaner/bigger the image, the better they perform for me. I tested this in the "sexy celebrities" niche where you get to compete with thousands of new players everyday and authority sites. Ive gotten great organic image traffic just by optimising it there.

There is no preference at all that the rankings is influenced based on extensions.
if the images with png tend to be in a higher competitive search queries it might be it.
are all png and jpg original images?

Hi Carla,
I have never heard of one file type being better or worse for image ranking, I would think it makes no difference so use the type that makes the most sense for the kind of image it is (ie jpg for photos, png for logos and generally whichever will give you a lower file size). That being said, I did a search for 'LĂnea Solarium Recto' and your images are the first ones shown so it might depend on what phrase you are trying to rank for with certain images, the pngs in other words are certainly showing up for quite specific searches.

They seem to have alt text which is good how long have you given it as like most thing in SEO it can take time.

Does duplicate content damage ranking in YouTube the same way it does on websites?
I'm asking this question due to the following scenario: When we have videos produced by Third Party video companies they upload the video to their YouTube account before us (the customer), has chance to upload it to ours. If this was an article that was uploaded to the web then the website uploading it first would be classed as the original piece and all other website uploading the article would be considered duplicates and not rank (As I believe). Hence my question, does YouTube work in the same way and hence our videos when searched in YouTube be secondary to our Third Party video companies as they are posting them first? Regards, Tom

Ranking dance teaching company in multiple locations where they hold casses
Hi Guys, This is a question to all the pro local SEOs out there. I have a client that teaches dance classes at three different studios in Manhattan, New York City, and these studios already have their own local presence in Google Local, Yelp and so on. They basically sublet the space to hold their classes. How would I rank them for these locations? Their actual office is in Brooklyn and I don't want to target Brooklyn audience, but they can verify their listings at the class locations in Manhattan. Â all advice appreciated!

Ranking top 3 with Geographical Keyword but not on 1st page without it.
Recently I have been working to solve an issue where we rank number 2 for "Web Design Memphis" yet we do not appear on the first few pages for the keyword "web design." Several of our local competitors appear on the first page without the geo keyword. What can be done to solve this issue? I am not searching incognito and Google is recognizing my locality. Why is the competition able to rank on the first page without the geo keyword and we are not? Thanks for your feedback!

Local Ranking Factors Question
Local SERPS continue to confuse me. Â I feel like I can tell what's going on but I'm never right. Â How do these two listings rank for "best bar" in the local Chicago SERPS? Â It's the same if you search for "best bar in chicago". http://maps.google.com/maps/place?hl=en&biw=2109&bih=1218&noj=1&gs_upl=3495l4209l0l4335l8l5l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=best+bar&fb=1&gl=us&hq=best+bar&hnear=0x880e2c3cd0f4cbed:0xafe0a6ad09c0c000,Chicago,+IL&cid=17128325649974296516 or http://maps.google.com/maps/place?hl=en&biw=2109&bih=1218&noj=1&gs_upl=3495l4209l0l4335l8l5l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=best+bar&fb=1&gl=us&hq=best+bar&hnear=0x880e2c3cd0f4cbed:0xafe0a6ad09c0c000,Chicago,+IL&cid=455944883716881589&ei=aQPqTo7mN4mIgwe4oc3fCA&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=placepage-link&resnum=5&ved=0CFgQ4gkwBA This has had me stumped for months. Â I've analyzed everything and there aren't any good indicators as to how this was done. Â The former doesn't even have a website. Â The latter example has some category keyword stuffing, which I don't get why they're account hasn't been suspended because of it. Â It also has a very small and not very powerful link profile. Any insights would be much appreciated!

Google Places - Local Search - Not ranking when 100% complete?
Hi I have followed the examples set by David Mihm and fully completed a Google Places listing - with the geographical area covering the area that it serves along with lots of local citations but when searching on google for 'accountants swansea' it is way down on page 4 of the places results. Does it take time for Google to recognise these changes to Places listings or is my listing incorrect to attract a high listing for the search phrase. Looking at the competition many of them have not optimised or done anything with their listings pages so I am at a loss to explain why the listing is doing so badly. The places listing is at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?hl=en&prmd=imvns&biw=1280&bih=829&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=accountants+swansea&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=accountants&hnear=0x486e45555a4e97b1:0x3d77128e2fe7cb74,Swansea,+Neath+Port+Talbot&cid=9815784575213492240&ei=UN6WTt7UJ8rasga-ocTrAw&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=placepage-link&resnum=7&ved=0CFcQ4gkwBjge

Local Keyword vs Business Name in URL
I am working with a local business owner who has purchased multiple domains. One includes the geographic area she serves and the type of business she runs. The other includes her business name and the type of business she runs. She is unsure of which domain she would like to use as the main URL for her business website. When choosing a domain for a small, local business, would you consider it advantageous to have the main geographic area that the business serves in the URL rather than the actual name of the business? What would be the best use of domain name which isn't selected from a SEO standpoint?

Why are we ranking so poorly for this keyword
I am having a hard time understanding why we are ranking so poorly for the keyword search "self storage toronto" on google.ca We have claimed our places page, and we have 38 citations and 9 reviews. Yet for some reason we are burried 7 pages into the places pages results way below other places pages that have far lower page authority, domain authority, and less citations and reviews on their places page. I just can't understand what we are doing wrong / overlooking. Any ideas? Here's the places page i am referring too: http://maps.google.ca/maps/place?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=storwell&fb=1&gl=ca&hq=storwell&cid=3009236871758088464&z=14 We do happen to land very high in the organic results for the same keyword, infact we are on the first page but why is google not giving us any love in places?
