Is it a good idea to use an old domain name for a new product
-
Hi guys,
I have a domain name XYZ.com which hosts the site of a technology service company as of now. The company however didn't do well and shut down a few years ago.
Now, that company wants to launch a new set of technology products and wants to use the same domain name. Is it a good idea. The issues that I can see here are:
1. Google has previous pages indexed
2. There are a couple of subdomains totally irrelevant to the business. like employees.xyz.com there.
3. Can the previous indexing be completely undone.
Regards,
Mayank

Absolutely, many sites go through a total re-branding.
The history of the site and probably the existing back links will get the site going rather fast, providing the site has not been penalised or anything like that in the past or suspect link building.
Make sure you create a good sitemap and have a good 404 page setup for all pages that no longer exist. be sure to remove all the pages that you no longer want/need.
Take advantage of some of the existing pages on the site if possible, the history and any links to those pages will be a good start for those pages.
Also look at the possibility of 301 redirecting any pages that have pagerank or links coming to them to related new pages that you create.

'domain:example.com/' is this line with a '/' at the end of the domain valid in a disavow report file ?
Hi everyone Just out of curiosity, what would happen if in my disavow report I have this line : domain:example.com**/** instead of domain:example.com as recommended by google. I was just wondering if adding a / at the end of a domain would automatically render the line invalid and ignored by Google's disavow backlinks tool. Many thanks for your thoughts

What domain name do you think is better for SEO: sirocco-webdesign.com or sirocco-web-design.com?
Hello, I would appreciate it very much if you share with me your thoughts on what domain name I'd better pick out in terms of productive SEO: sirocco-webdesign.com or sirocco-web-design.com? I know hyphens are not good, but second domain looks better, I think.

Moving to New Domain - Ranking impact
I understand that when migrating to a new site, even if done perfectly (page level 301s etc) that rankings will drop in the short term and each site will be impacted differently. I picked up the following comment and was wanting to get a few experts thoughts on whether I can quote this to my client: "In our experience, even when 301's are correctly executed, we see a short term fall back (7-30) days and then about a 90% carry through after that period for about 90 days and then back to full strength. "

Mapping and tracking old and new information architecture
Howdy. So I'm working on "example.com", which has thousands of URLs. The site is going to be redesigned, with some changes to the information architecture. I'm trying to think of a good way to organize and account for similarities and differences between the original information architecture and the new one. This should help with building 301s. I've downloaded a list of URLs from example.com from Open Site Explorer. What I would love to do is generate a visual "tree" of the site based on the output from Open Site Explorer. It would basically look like a pyramid with all of the subfolders branching out. Does anybody know of a tool out there that will do this for me? Or am I going to have a long day in Excel? 🙂 Any other thoughts on working through this process are welcome. Thank you!

.com domain is an iframe copy of a .net domain?
Hey folks, This one is over my head. I'm helping out a friend's dental office website (www.capitolperiodontal.com), and their home page source code points to the .net TLD for its content apparently: | | <title></span>http://www.capitolperiodontal.com/</title> http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html" /> rows="100%" id="dd_frameset_0001"> src="http://www.capitolperiodontal.net/" name="dd_content_0001" framespacing="0" frameborder="0" noresize="noresize" title="capitolperiodontal.com" /> <noframes></noframes> My idea was to load all the content from the .net to the .com, then redirect the .net to the .com as it has better domain authority and is, well a .com. Any insights what this iframe biz is all about and if my strategy above is ok? Many thanks folks! john
