What's my best strategy for Duplicate Content if only www pages are indexed?
-
The MOZ crawl report for my site shows duplicate content with both www and non-www pages on the site. (Only the www are indexed by Google, however.) Do I still need to use a 301 redirect - even if the non-www are not indexed? Is rel=canonical less preferable, as usual?
Facts:
- the site is built using asp.net
- the homepage has multiple versions which use 'meta refresh' tags to point to 'default.asp'.
- most links already point to www
Current Strategy:
- set the preferred domain to 'www' in Google's Webmaster Tools.
- set the Wordpress blog (which sits in a /blog subdirectory) with rel="canonical" to point to the www version.
- Ask programmer to add 301 redirects from the non-www pages to the www pages.
- Ask programmer to use 301 redirects as opposed to meta refresh tags & point all homepage versions to www.site.org.
Does this strategy make the most sense? (Especially considering the non-indexed but existent non-www pages.)
Thanks!!

Very informative - thank you! It seems when I think I have a relatively firm grip on SEO, I stumble upon something new - like the dangerous potential for an infinite loop in a 301 redirect in IIS. (That was Chinese to me two days ago;))
Your response solved my concerns - hopefully it will help somebody else when they face the same problem.

Well the reason Google has picked the www version as it's preferred version automatically is most likely because of all the links you mentioned that were already pointing to that iteration of your domain. Google can figure this out on their own. That said, it still sees both of the sites (non www and www) as duplicates of each other. Best practice is to 301 one to another.
I've waged this war with a programmer before so I know how it goes. The one I dealt with didn't think there was any reason and told me all websites work that way. So I asked him to go to http://google.com and tell me how it resolves. Repeat that step with every major brand you can think of until he/she gets the point and that might help you.
They should be able to 301 this one time, no matter whether they're using an Apache or IIS server. This should be a quick fix. If they're unsure how to do it, have them Google "IIS 301 redirects" if it's a Windows server or "htaccess 301" if it's a Linux/Apache server.

Thanks for easing my mind Jesse! One thing still confuses me - the fact that the non-www pages are not indexed. They are not disallowed in robots.txt, there are no rel=canonical tags (except for pages in the blog subdirectory), they are not meta-refreshed, and obviously not 301 redirected. Could it be the doing of a sitemap (though I cant find one)? Or did Google simply decide all the www pages were more relevant? Am I missing something here? I don't want to ask the programmer to add a ton of 301 redirects (which I did) only to get a 'DUH!' response;)
FYI - site is asp.net - not sure if that matters, except when they redirect homepage to avoid creating infinite loop. (right?)
Thanks again!

This is an incredibly easy topic to address because you've already laid out exactly what needs to happen.
In other words, yes! That strategy is exactly the way you should go.
Good job and good luck!

Duplicate Content & Rel Canonical Tag not working
I'm really questioning the legitimacy of the duplicate content flags with moz. I'm building a website that sells home decor products and a lot of the pages are similar in structure (As would be expected with a store that sells thousands of individual products). It seems a little overkill to me to flag the following pages as duplicate content. They have different urls, titles, h1, h2, and h3 tages, different meta tags, etc. Right now, it's saying that the following have duplicate page content: http://www.countryporchhomedecor.com

It keeps saying that pages with a rel canonical tag are duplicates when some of the urls that it's flagging shouldn't even be indexed because of the canonical tag. Blog Page URLs Showing Duplicate Content
On the SEOMoz Crawl Diagnostics, we are receiving information that we have duplicate page content for the URL Blog pages. For Example: blog/page/33/ blog/page/34/ blog/page/35/ blog/page/36/ These are older post in our blog. Moz is saying that these are duplicate content. What is the best way to fix the URL structure of the pages?

Duplicate Page Content and Title - Miva - How to fix?
Hi, I'm new to SEOmoz and just diving into it. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I use Miva Merchant as my storefront interface. SEMOz is returning a bunch of duplicate page content and duplicate page titles and I can't figure out what to do about it. It seems it may have something to do with Miva shortlinks. I click on the dup URL's in SEMOz and it brings me to a dead page. I can't figure out where it's coming from. I know without seeing the actual information it'll probably be tough to help me but any suggestions would be appreciated. I try to fix them and come to a point (after about three hours of getting nowhere) it becomes too frustrating. Thanks!

Duplicate Content Issues with WordPress
I'm having some difficulty with a few of the sites I'm managing right now. When I run a report here, I'm getting a duplicate content issue with sites that I'm running through WordPress. Sites running on a different CMS are not getting the issue. The duplicate content is being listed as from two URL's that are identical. I checked trailing slash, spelling, capitalization, everything. It looks like the same site is being marked as two with duplicate content. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this and/or what I may be able to do to resolve the issue (or if it's really something to worry about or not)? Thanks. (and thanks for helping the new guy!)

I am seeing this a lot - why is it happening? thanks Tracy

Redirecting duplicate .asp pages??
Hi all, I have a bit of a problem with duplicate content on our website. The CMS has been creating identical duplicate pages depending on which menu route a user takes to get to a product (i.e. via the side menu button or the top menu bar). Anyway, the web design company we use are sorting it out going forward, and creating 301 redirects on the duplicate pages. My question is, some of the duplicates take two different forms. E.g. for the home page: www.<my domain="">.co.uk

www..<my domain="">.co.uk/index.html
www.<my domain="">.co.uk/index.asp</my></my></my> Now I understand the 'index.html' page should be redirected, but does the 'index.asp' need to be directed also? What makes this more confusing is when I run the SEOMoz diagnostics report (which brought my attention to the duplicate content issue in the first place - thanks SEOMoz), not all the .asp pages are identified as duplicates. For example, the above 'index.asp' page is identified as a duplicate, but 'contact-us.asp' is not highlighted as a duplicate to 'contact-us.html'? I'm a bit new to all this (I'm not a IT specialist), so any clarification anyone can give would be appreciated. Thanks, Gareth0
