Still ok to use
-
This is the flag to prevent google storing a copy of your webpage.
I want to use it for good reasons but in 2013 is it still safe to use. My websites not spammy but it's still very fresh with little to no links.
Each item I sell takes a lot of research to both buy and sell with the correct info. Once it's sold one I may just come across another and want to hold my advantage of having already done my research and my sold price to myself. Competitors will easily find my old page from a long tail search. Some off my old sold pages keep getting hits and high bounce rates from people using it as reasearch and price benchmark. I want to stop this.
So, No archive first, then 301 to category page once sold. Will the two cause a problem in googles eyes?
-
Thank you,
That put my mind at rest.
I was also concerned about the wayback as I have used it many times to find out details of an old page when the google cache doesn't show me what I need. So an extra thank you for that info link as well.
-
I don't see any problem with putting a noarchive on your page. We do it on all of our skill pages, because those pages get their content via AJAX, and as such appear broken when viewing the cached versions. Doing this should not have any effect on your rankings.
301 redirecting pages that are no longer used to another (hopefully) relevant page on your site is a very common tactic and is a best practice, so I wouldn't be worried about that either.
The wayback machine will still archive your content, and your competitors may look it up there. If you want to keep your old pages out of their index, you'll need to disallow their crawler in your robots.txt, and keep it from visiting those pages, or your entire site. There's info on that here.

Yes, I agree , it would look artificial, which is what worries me.
What I am trying to achieve is normal and full indexing of an item page and normal coverage so people can find it.
However, once it is sold I want to remove the page as I don't want competitors to come across the page via a keyword search and then request the original cache copy with price and info from the search results.
I assumed pages hang around a while and can be found via cache, so once I remove or 301 the page that needs to make the old page information inaccessible immediately.
-
The behaviour might seem artificial to them. I have seen people use the 'noarchive' tag, but only when they want to speed up the removal (from Google index) process. Plus, I didn't entirely get what you're trying to achieve.

How can you best use additional domains with important keywords
Currently I have a corporate website that is ranking all right. However, I have some additional domains containing import search terms that I would like to use to get higher rankings for the corporate website, or allow these domains to generate more traffic for the corporate website. What are best practice in using these domains with keyword terms, to make most use of them, for ideally both ranking as well as generating additional traffic. All input is highly appreciated.

Am I using pagination markups correctly?
Hey Mozzers! I am receiving duplicate title tag errors from Search Console on paginated pages (blog.com/chlorine, blog.com/chlorine-2, blog.com/chlorine-3). I do not currently have a view all page. If I were to create one, would I add all the content from chlorine-2 and chlorine-3 to the blog.com/chlorine page? Then use the rel=cononical on chlorine-2 and chlorine-3 to blog.com/chlorine? If I move forward without the view all page, I could implement the next/prev HTML markups but can I do this without dev help? I am currently using the Yoast SEO plugin and do not see the option. Would I use the text editor to add the markups directly before the content? I think I have a grasp on this, but this will be my first time implementing and I want to double check first! Thanks!

Guys & Gals anyone know if urllist.txt is still used?
I'm using a tool which generates urllist.txt and looking on the SEO Forums it seems that Yahoo used to use this. What I'd like to know is is it still used anywhere and should we have it on the site?

Using RewriteRule - SEO Implications
Hi There, My client has a website (www.activeadventures.com) which they relaunched in April 2013. The company sells inbound tourism trips to New Zealand, South America and the Himalayas. Previously, the websites for these destinations were on their own domains (activenewzealand.com, activehimalayas.com, activesouthamerica.com). With the launch of the new website those domains were all retired (but had 301 redirects put into place to the new site), and moved into sub directories of the activeadventures.com domain (eg: activeadventures.com/new-zealand). There has been no indication that this strategy has improved organic search results (based on analytics) and in my opinion I believe that having this structure has been detrimental to their results. My opinion is based off the following: Visitors to the websites are coming into the site with a specific destination in mind that they want to travel to. Thus... having the destination in the URL I believe provides more immediate relevancy and should result in a higher CTR. I also feel that having the sites on their own URL's will provide a more concentrated theme for the destination based search phrases. The new site is a custom Joomla build and I want to find the easiest way to keep the current Joomla set up AND move the country specific sections of the site back onto their original URL's. It seems on the face of it that the easiest way to get this done is to use the htaccess file and use "RewriteRule" to push all the relevant pages back onto their original domains. Obviously we will ensure we also cover off pointing the existing 301's from the new site and the old sites to this new structure. My question is, are their any potential negative SEO implications of using the RewriteRule in the htaccess file to achieve this? Many thanks in advance. Kind Regards

Using video transcripts v captions and avoiding duplicate content?
Part 1: After editing a You Tube transcript, I typically re-upload as a caption file (with time codes)...for SEO does it matter whether you upload as a transcript v. captions? Is one better than the other? Part 2: If you upload a transcript (or caption) to YouTube, then post that video/transcript in your blog, wouldn't you get pinged for duplicate content?

Developing a drop down menu: Do I use javascript or pure css?
I am developing a drop down menu and am trying to decide if using javascript instead of just css is worth it. I've done some research on the topic and the opinions seem dated. I know that at one time not using javascript for a drop down menu was important but now less so. Google constantly says that they will not discount the links just because they are not shown until javascript is ran. What I want to know is has anyone discovered from testing that using javascript instead of css for a drop down makes a difference? Note: the links will not be located in an external javascript file.
