How To Rank Landing Pages In The SERPs
-
Hi, am hoping someone can give me a little advice..
We have created an Ebook for a client, which we will ‘hide’ behind a landing page for the purpose of collecting email addresses in return for a link to the Ebook.
We are thinking of using Unbounce landing pages, integrated with Mailchimp. The problem however is that I’m assuming it will not be possible for Unbounce landing pages to rank well in the SERPs.. which is essential.
The obvious solution would be to write a blog post detailing the contents of the Ebook, and then to ‘SEO’ this post.. this however will not provide a positive user experience as below;
- Visitor lands on blog post
- Visitor then has to click through to Ubounce landing page (very similar content)
- Visitor completes form to download Ebook
My question is; What’s the best way to rank a direct landing page in the SERP’s, whilst providing the best possible user experience (less steps)?
Many thanks in advance, your time is appreciated
Lee.

If you're saying that each ebook landing page lives on your root domain then that's definitely better. I thought as you were using Unbounce for the landing pages that they would be on a subdomain.

Wow, what a great response Oli, many thanks!
There are certainly some things we can do from this list, but others require additional budget which the client doesn't have.
Just one last question if you don't mind?
2. Have all of the ebooks for this client live on a subdomain such as get.clientsite.com/ebook1/ get.clientsite.com/ebook2/ - We currently use www.domain.com/ebooks, is there a particular reason you suggest using a sub-domain?
Thanks again, have a great weekend.
Lee.

Hi Lee,
I'd approach it like this (it's also how we do it at Unbounce).
To get it ranking in the SERPs (and be successful in general), I'd do:
- Write a blog post as you described. This would be the launch of the ebook. It should essentially be a preview of the ebook, either a chapter or some ket highlights turned into an original blog post.
- Have all of the ebooks for this client live on a subdomain such as get.clientsite.com/ebook1/ get.clientsite.com/ebook2/
- Make sure you have an XML sitemap listing all of the pages on that subdomain
- Create a resources page on the client's website to provide another link into the ebook page
- Allow two methods of digital currency in exchange for the ebook (pay with an email or pay with a tweet) - see this ebook landing page as an example - http://get.unbounce.com/conversion-centered-design-guide/. The tweet version allows the page to have a viral loop to maintain the momentum of the page.
- Have the client email their list to drive more people to it. The more people see it the more will link into the page.
- Have social share buttons on the confirmation page to get more exposure to the ebook landing page.
- Do some outreach to friends, colleagues, blogs etc. that might be able to add a link to the ebook.
- Do a guest post with another portion of the ebook expanded into an original piece.
- Do a Slideshare presentation of the ebook. This will get you listed in the SERPs immediately. Make sure you have a CTA at the end of the presentation linking to the ebook landing page.
That's a few things off the top of my head
Hope it helps, cheers.

Many thanks Ocelot, it's not possible to 'frame' or embed Unbounce landing pages within an external webpage.. looked into this yesterday! It would be the ideal solution too.

Depending on the actual value of the lead generated from the email have you also considered PPC?
But coming back to your point, if you create a blog post it needs to be of compelling content (not sure what your ebook is about) but your post must be interesting/useful enough for visitors to share and create a buzz online. In my experience this helps it get picked up quicker in the search results. The other option would be to frame the unbounce page within a page within your existing website?

Adwords landing pages with no site links
Adwords best practices say to focus landing pages on conversions, with no navigational links to the rest of your website so they don't get distracted. However, now that Google Ads in the SERPs look so similar to organic results, visitors may click the ads instead of the organic result because that's what they see first. What is the risk of turning off these visitors who come to a landing page with a form, instead of a way to navigate through the rest of your site? Discussion question: Trade-offs between a form-focused landing page and providing navigation to the rest of the site?

Adwords Remarketing Advice - Low Traffic Pages
Moz, I am just looking for a little advice if anyone has any experience with Google Adwords and remarketing in particular, I am currently looking through the Adwords help pages to gain a better understanding of how Adwords remarketing works, from what i gather this can be a really useful resource to use in certain industries and i have a lot of ideas and scenarios where i think this could work really well, I am just trying to get a good understanding of the how remarketing lists are built up, Using Rule based targeting for visitors that have visited a specific page that gains roughly 1200 unique visits every 60 days, so i have set the membership duration to 60 days, So if i use the visit of this page as a rule for my list, then in a little less than 60 days time then my custom ads should start appearing to these previous visitors ? My Question Am a right in thinking the remarketing list is like a funnel, once 1000 visitors are added to this list/funnel then my ads will start showing, but then as those visitors in the funnel have reached the 61st Day they will be removed, and replaced with the new visitors being added to the list for that day ? Aslong as my list remains above 1000 visitors it will continue to show, but if i were to drop below 1000 visits within that 60 days my ads would not be visible ? so i would need to potentially extend the membership period if this happens ? Apologies as i really struggled to explain this question as best as i can 🙂 Hope someone can drop me a quick comment and straighten this out to ensure that i am on the right track and i am understanding this correctly 🙂 Thanks a lot James

Optimising /product/ pages for our 15,000 product ecommerce store.
Hi guys! We're constantly working on evolving our /product/ pages on the site, however some times it's pretty easy to get lost in your own mess. Especially when the sites consists of 15,000+ products. So it's pretty painful to handcraft every single page. So I thought I'd jump in here to see if anyone had any suggestions for stuff we're missing, and or should improve? These are product pages: http://www.warcom.com.au/products/9954_draytek-vigor-120-single-port-adsl-122-modem http://www.warcom.com.au/products/49884_warcom-deluxe-double-lcd-monitor-stand---free-shipping There is a few issues we're aware of already.. Negatives: To many links in the left menus. To many links in the footer. Positives: We recently included rich snippets.. We're always testing out colors and styles. We're always testing meta data. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How Do I Create a Google Analytics Dashboard for My Designer To Monitor Landing Page A/B Testing
Hello All, We recently started doing some "AdWords Experiments" using A/B testing of our search landing pages. My web design team does not have access to our AdWords account, but they do have "user" access to our Google Analytics account. What I need to figure out how to do is setup an easy dashboard (or custom report) that will show them at a quick glance how the two versions of their page are performing in terms of: Goal Completions (Conversions) where the specific page is the entrance/landing page. Bounce Rate Time spent on site where the specific page is the entrance/landing page. Pages viewed where the specific page is the entrance/landing page. Possibly a way to see the most popular page visited 'next' after starting on the specific entrance/landing page Anything else that might be useful The two URLs would be like: http://www.domain.com/search/testa/

What company/person do you recommend for improving conversion rates on landing pages?
Hello! I'm looking for specific recommendations of companies with whom you have been "Tickled pink at fantastic conversion improvement results!" I'm the customer for this service. 🙂 I seek a page-level review of a specific area of my site. I'm looking for output of specific recommendations for improving conversion rates. I want to avoid paying for a "generic best practices report" with one or two ideas for my site sprinkled in. I realize that I will be called to complete proper input into the process. I am ready to do my share with the level of detail required. So, if you have an enthusiastic recommendation, please share. Details are appreciated. Most important, please tell me why this company made you very happy. I sincerely look forward to SEOMozzer input. Thank you kindly, Loren

How to improve Time to First Byte? Page Load Speed
I am working with a ecommerce site that is having major issues with their load speed. The ttfb is...wait for it...7911 ms. I am not even sure where to start with this issue. If you have any recommendations, it would be appreciated. Is it the clients servers that are slow? They have went through multiple redesigns and have some code that could probably be deleted but I don't think it would make it that slow.

Contact page lead optimization
Hi, I have a client whose contact page is the second most visited after the home page. However, there is a 93.65% abandonment rate on the contact page. This could be for a number of reasons: There is a phone number on the page, so people may call the firm There is a Google Map on the page, so people may get directions The top next pages are: Exiting the site (about 50%) Returning to the home page Going to the About the Company page Going to the Distributors page (the company is a manufacturer) What is the best way to analyze the performance of this page? Thanks, Josh

Page Title Tags - SEO vs CRO ?
Hi everyone, Thanks to what seems to be a recent(ish) algo change in Google, some of our more targeted deeper pages are ranking for search terms where before only our homepage would rank. This is of course great however I am a little worried that some of the page titles of our internal pages are a little short, for example our main departments (we are an ecommerce store) are titles 'Department Name | Liberty Games' so for example 'Pool Tables | Liberty Games'. I have heard varying reports on what to do with the title tag, I have heard to keep the most relevant keywords to the left of the tag, which we have done, I have also heard that shorter is better. I am just a bit concerned that our tags are looking a little stumpy in the serps alongside other results which are longer (although admittedly a bit keyword stuffed). So (eventually) my question is, will short titles harm my click-through rate ? but are shorter titles better for SEO ? If longer is better are there any recommendations about what I could add to these titles that could potentially help click-throughs and natural rankings ? Many thanks, Stuart
