Google Site Links question
-
Are Google site links only ever shown on the top website? Or is it possible for certain queries for the site in position #2 or #3 or something to have site links but the #1 position not have them? If there are any guides, tips or write ups regarding site links and their behavior and optimization please share!
Thanks.

I think the "avoids repetition" is in reference to anchor text or alt text to two different pages. For example, if Page A and Page B are both priority pages and both in the main navigation menu, their anchor text or alt text should be different. That way, when Google displays them as site links, they both won't display the same text in the site link.

Thanks for the info!
I'm curious, what does Google mean here regarding internal links avoiding repetition? Wouldn't it make sense that your internal links for a particular page on your site all use the same anchor text for the sake of consistency? Or am I not understanding their advice correctly?

Hello! In my experience, site links are only shown for the top ranking site. And it's typically for a branded search term. In terms of optimization, the best you can do with Google is to demote URLs that you do not want used as a site link. You can demote up to 100 in Google Webmaster Tools.
Bing allows some additional control: you can weight the pages that are appearing in Bing's site link consideration set. For example, there might be 15 URLs in their consideration set, but they only display 8. So you have the ability to make suggestions as to which of the 15 will be displayed in search results.
With all of that said, site links typically come from the main navigation and is algorithmically derived, so presumably, it's the most important pages on your site, as determined by site architecture, AND the pages that have high user engagement.
I'll leave you with some advice from Google on optimizing for quality site links:
"There are best practices you can follow, however, to improve the quality of your sitelinks. For example, for your site's internal links, make sure you use anchor text and
alt
text that's informative, compact, and avoids repetition."-Trung

Google search console: 404 and soft 404 without any back-links. Redirect needed?
Hi Moz community, We can see the 404 and soft 404 errors in Google web masters. Usually these are non-existing pages which are found somewhere on internet by Google. I can see some of these reported URLs don't have any back-links (checked on ahrefs tool). Do we need to redirect each and every link reported here or ignore or marked to be fixed? Thanks

Google panda, penguin or Patience needed?
Dear friends, On 3rd of May, i suffered a Manual google unnatural outbound link penalty. I recovered from the said penalty on 27th of June. However, i have noticed that my traffic has been dropping since 23rd April. I am confused where to target my work. Should i work on thin content and is it an algorithmic Panda problem (but my keywords are still ranking good) or is it a Penguin problem (I had 6 domains with payday loans backlinks and i have dosavowed 32 backlinks recently) What should be my plan of action here and what would you recommend? Meta Descriptions - Google ignores what we have
Hi I still write meta descriptions to help with CTR. I am currently looking at a page where the CTR needs improving. I check the meta on Google SERPs & it isn't pulling through the meta description we have - but other info on the page. This isn't ideal - why does this happen? Will Google just make the decision and are descriptions not worth writing?

Recent Google algorithm update?
Two of our clients have experienced a huge dip in organic rankings during the past week or so and we haven't done anything that would cause this. Have there been any major Google changes reported lately? I'm not seeing anything reported here: https://moz.com/google-algorithm-change. Thanks for your input. Eric

Are the latest Ranking Reports counting the new large format site links as positions?
Received my weekly ranking report this morning and noticed a specific keyword that I've been ranking in the 3rd or 4th spot has dropped a significant amount of positions. I tested the results myself and it appears the site links of the manufacturer are being counted as positions? My keyword has me in the 3rd position (although it is much lower on the physical page now because of the new format). I'm really wondering how this will affect organic listings going forward - this new format could be a game changer.

Google seems to have penalised one section of our site? Is that possible?
We have a page rank 5 website and we launched a new site 6 months ago in February. Initially we had horrible urls with a bunch of numbers and stuff and we since changed them to lovely human readable urls. This had an excellent effect across the site except on one section of the site: http://www.allaboutcareers.com/careers/graduate-employers Although Google has indexed these pages and several have a PR 2 they do not appear in Google when previously they were on page 1 when we had the old urls. We figured we just needed some time for Google to get used to it, but it hasn't done anything. It is also worth mentioning we changed the page titles from: FIRM NAME | DOMAIN NAME then... FIRM NAME | Graduate Scheme, Jobs, Internships & Apprenticeships | DOMAIN NAME then.. FIRM NAME | Graduate Scheme, Jobs, Internships & Apprenticeships Do you think these are being penalised? There are two types of page: Example A: http://www.allaboutcareers.com/careers/graduates/addleshaw-goddard.htm Example B: http://www.allaboutcareers.com/careers/graduates/accenture.htm
