Competitor has 50 linking root domains, 2500 facebook likes
-
Hello,
A competitor of ours is ranking way higher than you would expect. They have very few links, half the DA and homepage PA of us, yet they rank several slots higher.
On analysis, the only difference seems to be that they have 2500 facebook likes.
Did they buy likes? Have you seen anything odd like this before?
Thanks.

What would be a 100% white hat way to get the same results?
-
Sounds pretty gray-hat. I don't believe it violates any of Facebook's rules though. A company I used to work with did those promotional "like-us" campaigns... never a big fan personally but they did get numbers.

A little digging uncovered what they did.
1. They held a $200 sweepstakes that you had to like their page to join and they published press releases.
2. They offer a $3 coupon if you like them on facebook.
Brilliant, but is it white hat?

Have you checked the age of your domain name, compared to the age (both forward and backward) of their domain name? That could factor into the ranking analysis.
It's possible they bought likes, but it's likely that the people running the other organization are spending a lot of money sponsoring Facebook posts that get people to like their site.
This might be the case where the social component of the ranking outweighs a site that has other high metrics from Moz (Google doesn't use PA and DA; Moz ranks based on these estimates).
It could be that their site content is more recent and topical, so the site is ranking for fresh, new content, instead of a page that has withstood the test of time.
I'm happy to take a look at both your site and the competitor's site to see additional differences, and look at search results, if you want to post them here...
Thanks,
-- Jeff

External linking
Hi guys. So I know external linking is good, as I've seem to have read every article written on the subject from 2007 to 2016, but can't seem to find anything more recent, but does that mean you are better to at least one external link on every page? And if so, would it suffice to link just to our social media profiles even if you are in an industry where social media brings in very little in the way of customer enquiries? I've actually linked to all our social profiles but made them nofollow. However, that said, would it be better to leave them nofollow and link to Government white papers in my sector for example?

Links to Social Media accounts, rel=nofollow/follow and rel=me
Hi guys, I just saw this rel="me" attribute and I can't find any reputable recent (within last year) information. I never heard of this and wonder if it's any beneficial in any way. At the same time, should I use nofollow or follow on links from website to social accounts? I've heard different opinions but, again, no recent relevant and trustworthy information. Please, kick me into right direction. However, when kicking, please give me some proof, rather than thoughts 🙂 Thanks!

Tool to get all the Social Shares for a Domain
Does anyone know of a tool that can get you the total, or close to it, social shares an entire domain has received? I know of... http://www.sharedcount.com/ - but this only gets shares for the entered URL not the entire domain. http://www.pagesort.com/ - this seems to dig a little deeper but not deep enough. I know opensite explorer gets some data as well but still seems very limited.

Facebook etiquette
Should you post on competitor's facebook page, I had an opportunity to recommend a client site for their services. The facebook page was a holiday company, they only offered hotels & apartments, the post asked do they do villas and they responded with "no" and wished them luck. Should I have posted a link to our clients website or facebook page?
