Video Sitemap Creation Question
-
I have created a sitemap file as per Google Web Master Tools instructions. I have it saved as a .txt file.
Am I right in thinking that this needs to be uploaded as a .xml file?
If so, how do I convert this to a XML? I have tried but it seems to corrupt - there must be a simple way to do this?!
-
Thanks guys - I'll keep persevering. Hopefully I'll sort this out shortly!
-
Yes, it needs to be a .xml file.
You can save a text file as .xml using Word or Pages... or even notepad.
-
Hi, if the syntax of the code in your text file is correct, then it should just be a case of changing the file suffix from .txt to .xml.
You shouldn't need to open it in any editor, just rename it. If you need to open it though then don't use MS Word as that is really a rich text editor. Either use Notepad on a PC or TextEdit on a Mac
An XML file is a simple text file, but the syntax needs to be correct.

Thanks for your help guys.
The sitemap.txt file I have created uses the correct approach as listed by Google on this page - it isn't just a list of links in a Wordpad file:
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/80472?hl=enI am just trying to eastablish how to convert it to an XML file. When I change the file extension it seems to break and when I export from MS Word it doesnt seem to like the parameter
Didn't think this would be so difficult!

XML sitemaps needs some structure, is not just a plain text file with the URLs in it.
Did you build the sitemap with a script or manually? Mind sharing it here?

Hi, the video sitemap needs to be in XML format not text.
Are the videos hosted on YouTube? If so, there is a free generator for YouTube videos here:

Sitemap Query
I've decided to write my own sitemap because frankly, the automated ones pull all kinds of out of I don't know where. So to get around that, manual it is. But I have some products appear in various categories, should I still list every product in each category in the sitemap, regardless of some being duplicates, or should I choose the most relevant category and list them there? I do have a canonical URL extension which should resolve any duplicate content I have.

Question about Syntax in Robots.txt
So if I want to block any URL from being indexed that contains a particular parameter what is the best way to put this in the robots.txt file? Currently I have-

Disallow: /attachment_id Where "attachment_id" is the parameter. Problem is I still see these URL's indexed and this has been in the robots now for over a month. I am wondering if I should just do Disallow: attachment_id or Disallow: attachment_id= but figured I would ask you guys first. Thanks!0 -
SEO Question re: Keyword Cannibalization
I know about Keyword Cannibalization, so I understand why it's generally a problem. If you have multiple versions of the same page, Google has to "guess" which one to display (as I understand it, unless you have a SUPER influential page you won't get both pages showing up on the SERP). To explain why I'm not sure if this applies to our page, we have a blog that we write about employment law issues on. So we might have 20 blog posts over the past year that all talk about recent pregnancy discrimination lawsuits employers might be interested in. Now, searching the Google Keyword tools, there aren't even close to 20 different focus keywords that would make any sense. "Pregnancy Discrimination lawsuit" is niche enough for us to be competitive, but anything more specific than that simply has very little search activity. My suggestion is to just optimize all of them for "pregnancy discrimination lawsuit". My understand of how Panda works is that if the content is different on each page (and it is!) then it will only display what it guesses is the most relevant "NLRB" post, but any link juice sent to the other 19 "NLRB" posts would still boost the relevancy for whatever post Google chooses. And it wouldn't get dinged as keyword stuffing because it's clearly not just the same page repeated over and over. I've found quite a few articles on Keyword Cannibalization but many are pre-Panda. I was CERTAIN I'd seen a post that explained my idea is a totally viable and good one, but of course now I can't find it. So before I go full steam ahead with this strategy I just want to make sure there's nothing I'm missing. Thanks!

Posting same video on both Vimeo and Youtube
A client likes the control of Vimeo Pro for embedding videos on site, but for search purposes would like to create a YouTube channel with the same videos, perhaps with altered titles and descriptions. This is the same video content in two places - will we run into duplicate content issues? Thank you, Stephen

Hi, I have a 2 month old blog with me, i have submitted a few press releases for the start, later in these 2 months, i got about 40 guest posts, which i've written and submitted at myblogguest site. My niche is in health. Currently my serps are at 16th page which is not a good position. Does it become useful? please help as i find no other sources for my link building task, i tried researching for guest blogs in google also, but i don't find any related to my niche. Question about WhiteHat Quality Link Building Technique!
Hello, I am using Opensite Explorer as well as Link Builder from wordtracker to find good links which either link to my competitors or either links pointing to top 20 sites in my niche keyword. Then my team follow each link and find Directory Links Forum Profile Links Bookmark Links PR / Article Sites Links Guest Blog Post Sites Links... Then we make links manually to those sites for our websites as well. Is this a good whitehat strategy for long term good SEO, i believe opensiteexplorer's high page authority links shall worth in a long run. What is the average % of links from a sitemap that are included in the Google index? Obviously want to aim for 100% of the sitemap urls to be indexed, is this realistic?
