How to delete video rich snippets?
-
Hi mozzaholics,
At first I was very happy to have video snippets appear in Google (200 pages), but now after 6 months I see a drop of almost -30% in traffic, whilst the average rank stayed the same, compared to the star snippets I have for other pages.
So I want to remove the video snippets and have the old rich snippets back. I tried removing the videositemap and google's the structured data tool doesn't show video snippets.
Does anybody know what else I can do to remove the video snippets? Is there anybody who succeeded deleting them? Please share your wisdom.

Are you looking to remove every single video snippet? Or just the snippets from some pages? It seems fairly drastic to remove every one, so I'd suggest you delve a bit deeper and work out exactly which pages you don't want the snippet on any more. That way, you can submit a sitemap with some URLs, but not all.
Additionally, note that it's much easier to get the thumbnail changed than the snippet removed entirely, could you try split testing thumbnails to see if it's just suboptimal pictures that are causing you problems here, rather than the snippets as a whole?
If you can't take the videos down, I honestly think you'll struggle to get the snippets removed. Google are not on your side here unfortunately.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for your extensive answer. I saw your response before, when looking in to this problem, here on moz (loved your video btw) and elsewhere. It's too bad there isn't a guideline by Google we can follow.
I did remove the videositemap, but since these are the only video's on the site. I did not resubmit it. Do you recommend resubmitting an empty one (bit weird though)?
I can't take them off the website since it is high season in my industry and the video's do have added value to the visitor. I guess it's just not something he or she is expecting when looking (googling) for our product.

Hi Ivo,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you're really going to struggle to get those snippets removed, especially since you've used YouTube embeds.
It seems that right now, once a video is indexed, it's very hard to get that snippet removed. You can get a difference video snippet indexed for the page, but Google don't seem to refresh the index regularly or re-crawl pages to determine whether the video attribution is still relevant that often either.
In instances where I have managed to get snippets removed, it's often taken months and there doesn't seem to be a huge level of consistency I can point to.
That said, here are my recommendations:
- Submit a new video sitemap with the appropriate pages taken out (don't just remove the old one)
- Take the videos off the page (and you probably want them off YouTube as well in your case).
- Ensure you don't have FB open graph tags or schema tags related to the video on the page.
- Once you've done all this, resubmit the page to GWMT and then hope for the best!

No the traffic went to our own website, but the CTR dropped after the video snippets appeared. So we want to go back to star rich snippets.

Was the issue that it was sending the traffic to youtube instead of your site? If that's the case have you considered a backlink friendly hosted video solution(Wistia is the onlu one I know).
I'm really curious about this particular scenario.

Thanks for answering. It's HTML
with a ref to Youtube. There is no rich snippet info surrounding it. The video sitemap did the trick. So removing the video sitemap seems the first step.

What have you used to put them in place in the first place? HTML, PHP, WordPress?
If I'm understand the question correctly if should just be a case of removing the rich snippets that are around your video information?

Should we set up redirects for all deleted TAGS?
We recently found our site had 65,000 tags (yes 65K). In an effort to consolidate these we've started deleting them. MOZ is now reporting a heap of 404 errors for tag pages. These tag pages should not have links to them so not sure how come they're being crawled. Any suggestions from experience in this area would be useful.

Single Page for video & text resources or multiple?
Our new site will have a 'learning center' which contains educational videos as well as articles for prospects who are considering purchase. We were thinking linking to the "Learning center" page from main menu then having multiple videos and articles on this page. (thumbnails, & brief descriptions). Then when the user clicks on the video or article this will take them to a page with that video or article. My thoughts are that would allow us to optimize each page for that question or video topic. Is this a good idea? or should we just have video thumbnails on one page and have the video play on that same page? What about articles, should they also expand on that page or should they open on separate page? We are using WP as CMS. If the videos open on separate pages then how does the user easily get the other videos? will they have to go back to the /learning page or something else? It would seem like a lot of work to have them keep going back to watch one video, then go back and watch the next. What is the best practice - if there is one? Examples of websites that do this well?

Keyword rich domain name and page title
Hi guys, First of all, I must say I love this community, and that SEO is great and at time fascinating :d Ok my question now is, I have this domain which is keyword rich, later I noticed Google changed my pages title into something else but similar, also added my domain name (mysite.com) in the titles. Google had taken some of his auto-title-suggestions from inside my pages, later i changed them and saw google changed the titles too accordingly, nice work google ) So I figured this tile name changing is because my domain is already keyword rich, right? so the best practice is, I create a more unique descriptive title + my domain name at the end of the title. (And for homepage, domain name .com at the beginning in the title. What do you think? Thanks for your thoughts!

Can You Use More Then One Google Local Rich Snippet on a single site/ on a single page.
I am currently working on a website for a business that has multiple office locations. As I am trying to target all four locations I was wondering if it is okay to have more then one Local Rich Snippet on a single page. (For example they list all four locations and addresses within their footer and I was wondering if I could make these local rich snippets). What about having more then one on a single website. For example if a company has multiple offices located in several different cities and have set up individual contact pages for these cities, can each page have it's own Local Rich Snippet? Will Google look at these multiple "local rich snippets" as spaming or will they recognize the multiple locations and count it towards their local seo?

New small business.. brand or keyword rich domain?
With so many keyword rich domains in circulation is there actually little option for small business right now other than to use keyword rich domains themselves e.g. (businessname)(keywords).com instead of brand e.g. (businessname.com) where competitors are using keyword rich domains and ranking high? It could be a mis-perception on my part, but, unless you have a very old non keyword domain name, if you don't have a keyword rich domain name in a competitive market you will struggle to succeed unless you have a serious SEO budget. Unless you are the next Google/Facebook/Pepsi isn't branding just a load of BS ? We are ourselves are in a predicament about which domain to use for our own website design business. We have a brand name domain name which is a 4 char domain but we also have a brand+keyword domain and are not 100% which one to use as our primary domain. Perhaps we can use the brand domain as our primary domain and then use the brand+keyword domain as an appropriately constructed single page promotional site, perhaps with unique content which links back to the brand domain? Good idea / Bad idea? I guess the overriding question is, if the content is good enough is the domain name you choose irrelevent to some extent?

Schema markup for video vs. Authorship: How will the SERP look?
All, Would love to hear from the community on the issue of 2 rich snippets appearing on the same page, will one take precedence in the SERP? For example, I am working with a client who has authorship markup on his homepage, we are going to add to that schema markup for an introductory video. Will the video snippet or authorship snippet display? Will both display?

Locating 404 Page Errors for Deletion
On my SEOmoz report, there are several 404 pages that I assume need deletion. Yes? When I am looking at my pages from the back-end of WordPress, how do I identify these to delete or fix them? In the list of pages I have created, it is not at all apparent when I click into "edit" the page that any of these are broken pages. I think the 404 pages are urls from pages that I changed the url to be more seo friendly, but they don't really exist. I hope this makes sense - it is baffling to me : ) Thank you for any insight and help with getting these cleared. The errors are listed below from the report. How do I create a Video Sitemap for Youtube Embedded Videos?
I've been seeing a lot of people recommend creating a video sitemap or Media RSS feed (mRSS) and submit to Google. We have videos hosted on Brightcove and most on YouTube. Brightcove can generate the sitemap for us. But does anyone know how to generate a YouTube Video Sitemap for those videos embedded on our pages? Note: I realize I could manually assemble the video sitemap, however manually assembling the sitemap is probably not an option for us due to the volume of videos we've published.
