Moz Q&A is closed.
After more than 13 years, and tens of thousands of questions, Moz Q&A closed on 12th December 2024. Whilst we’re not completely removing the content - many posts will still be possible to view - we have locked both new posts and new replies. More details here.
Do you think that Content Locking (force to share to unlock content) is manipulative and will eventually be penalised by Google?
-
There is a tactic called content locking which requires a user to share a post or homepage URL in order to unlock content (either a video, a full post or downloadable ebook).
Do you think this is manipulating signals to increase search rankings?
Argument Against Using Content Locking
Social signals and links from Google Plus shares clearly correlate to increased search engine visibility.
Requiring a user to pay for content with social sharing is only used to improve search rankings.
According to the webmaster guidelines:
"Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you'd feel comfortable explaining what you've done to a website that competes with you, or to a Google employee. Another useful test is to ask, 'Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?'"
Argument For Using Content Locker
Users tend to value their social profiles and won't share something unless they believe it is valuable. Requiring a share is just a push to motivate them to share something they value.
Additionally, it is similar to an email opt-in in that the publisher now has a social media lead they can follow up on.
It's not just about SEO, it's about tapping into social network traffic and engagement on social networks.

Right!
And there can be secondary effects. If you are running surveys and people bounce back into the SERPs instead of answering the question, could that result in a ranking reduction because of poor engagement? I have been running surveys and am cautiously watching my engagement and rankings.

Because Google has never broken its own guidelines and then penalized its own pages before.... http://searchengineland.com/google-penalizes-google-japan-16541

You may find it does the opposite of what you intend if your visitors don't use social media - they'll feel left out of the party and nobody likes that! There are many many reasons why someone would choose not to be on social media, and forcing them to have an account just to read an article is never going to work - they'll just leave and find the content elsewhere on the web.
Check analytics to see how socially engaged your visitors are. If they are, then I'd test it as a tactic - it may not work for long though, because it's the sort of thing Google doesn't like ('Don't do as I do, do as I say!!!!')
I bet Mr Cutts is thinking of a way to thwart your plan as I type this
Good luck whatever you do, and please let us know what the outcome is!

This isn't an answer. Just sayin' something that one google project is doing.
If you are familiar with Google Consumer Surveys, people who arrive at a page of content are asked to do a small task in exchange for unlocking the content. They are normally given a choice of two tasks: A) answer one or two multiple choice questions, or, B) share the content.
So, if Google is going to be slappin' people for the share, they will be slappin' their own project along with its publishers.

How to provide good quality content if competition is stealing
Hi everyone, I have a customer that is very successful in a worlds niche market in the aviation industry. Following Rand Fishkin and Wil Reynolds I tell them to provide the best content they have for their customers and want them to blog. Now the issue is that their competition is playing unfair and already stole texts from them to present those at aviation fairs. What do you think? How can one follow Rands and Wils suggestions without losing in the end? Cheers Marc

Google + and SEO
Hello, A couple of competitors that I keep an eye on over the last couple of months have been really going for the Google + links and according to Opensite explorer they have over 200 social page metrics for Google +. I was just wondering if there has been an update that I have missed that gives follow links for Google + or does Google + affect Domain authority? And if so can I just use my own Google + account to create these social page metrics or does it depend on someone else sharing my posts? Many thanks

How important is Google Plus - Specifically for B2B Small Businesses?
Our traffic is about 300 visitors a day in a small industrial niche. We have 89 wonderful facebook followers (all friends and no customers) and basically social media is of no interest to our audience. The same is true of all our competitors - we all have twitter accounts, FB accounts etc and they are resolutely ignored by our customers. [For a combination of Industry Sector, Language, Culture, Business Culture and Job Role] That's not the question though 🙂 No one has any Google Plus followers either and no +1's on pages. So if I get 10 +1's on a page will that make any difference? Would 50? Would 500? How much effort should I put in to this? As we are not an e-commerce revenue isn't tied directly to website traffic but there is a correlation. So is it worth spending a bit of time to develop a 'natural distribution' of +1's and then reach out to my contacts to get them to plus 1 me? That is I use lots of different google accounts, with different IPs on different pages at different times and slowly build Or do i just say that this part of the SEO approach is of no benefit and I ignore?

Important G+ News: Google to End Forced G+ Integration, Cut Resources. What Does Everyone Think?
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/04/report-google-to-end-forced-g-integration-drastically-cut-division-resources/ Assuming this article is accurate, I am glad this happened. I spent little time focusing on G+ because I truly felt there were better things to focus my time on. It was never well received by the public and SEO's (for the most part). I did not agree with its usability nor its philosophy. Its forced integration was annoying to say the least and I believe by forcing it down our throats, it turned many of us off. I hope that G+ will no longer have any impact on ranking in SERPs. I never dedicated much time to gaining more followers and I hope that was the right decision. What does everyone think about this?

Google 'Author' tag question (Guest Blogging)
Hi, It seems like im seeing more and more about the Author tag, its now in Webmaster Tools and Google+. If your guest blogging, is it a good idea to include the Author link back to your Google+ account? If your Google+ account is also connected to your website and Google confirms they can see the connection does the Author links help with ranking when you push them back to the connected Google+ account?

How to best promote this content via social media to gain backlinks
I have created this content http://www.musicliveuk.com/live-music/the-worst-function-bands-and-wedding-bands-ever in order to promote it via social media. Ideally I want it to be shared across the web in order to gain backlinks. My question is how can I best do this? I know I can post it on twitter, facebook, google plus etc... but is that it? I'm new to social media and don't really understand how to use it to good effect. By posting it on social networking sites am I risking people copying the content and duplicate content penalties? Any help would be much appreciated!
