Is it important to have a geo modifier for local SEO link building?
-
If anyone here is familiar with local SEO, you may have noticed that there are different local results for:
"city + Keyword" and just the "keyword".
When building links will you end up targeting both with a geo modifier in the link, or is it beneficial to build links without the geo modifer for the keyword?
-
Thank you for clarifying and sharing your knowledge. I think it is easy to get stuck in a link building rut with little variance when working on local, so this will very much help.
-
Absolutely. In my presentation at SMX Advanced this week, I touched on the critical need for inbound links to have a healthy variety of anchor text, as that is the only way to emulate natural links.
Brand variations
domain name
high level keyword phrases
mid level keyword phrases
long tail phrases
generic textThese should all be part of the mix, over time. And this would include, for local sites, anchors with and without various forms of geo.

Glad you're willing to Google it Chris. I've no idea where to buy utility kilts And you bring up a very important concept - out of town searchers. There are millions (billions?) of people who travel - for vacation, business, permanent relocation...
-
I agree with you Alan in respect to the need for geo modifiers. I was just thinking of my own individual brick and mortar business. Making me extremely selfish in my questioning.
Do you see any value in linkbuilding for a local brick and mortar business without the geo modifier in the anchor text?
-
-
I like you critical thinking Alan. Too many times people react without thinking through the consequences of those actions.
Don't forget about the geo searches for people who are not in your area but are looking for information on it. I am in Florida but will be doing searches to find out what is going on in Seattle during MOZcon at the end of July. That includes car rental, restaurant, tourist traps (my wife is coming too), maybe even your overnight multi-day pet-sitting service if we bring the dogs as well are heading to Maui for a week to absorb everything the experts can teach me.
By the way. What is that place in Seattle that sells utility kilts? Think I will Google it.
-
Forward thinking is critical to sustainable SEO. However I partially disagree - some geo search will always exist. As in my examples of "bay area" relatd phrases. The "bay area" I live within is hundreds of square miles. there's no way humanly possible leaving that "bay area" out of the query will ever get me info on companies 40 or 50 miles away.
-
While most people currently search with the geo modifier, my belief is that many will no longer use this modifier in the future as they become comfortable with the understanding that searches know where they are located automatically.
I think it is important to be ahead of the curve and work on terms that may not be readily searched for, and that includes simply typing in the "keyword" only into google and looking at the local results.
For that reason I would love to know if backlinking for the "keyword" only will have an effect without the geomodifier to influence the local results.
-
I was under the assumption that it made no difference if the site was set for local under webmaster tools or not, and Google would figure it out.
Is this actually of benefit in local search?
As far as the local search volume goes, I am unsure how that matters, since their are two sets of results with and without the geo modifier. So how can backlinking influence the one without the geo modifier?
-
Including geo modifiers is always a good idea if it's a brick-and-mortar business that wants to ensure reaching the local and semi-local market online. It does not prevent reaching other prospective customers in a significant way if done properly.
Be aware that some local terms don't show as having any traffic in the Google system. This does NOT mean they're not searched, just that keyword suggestion tools are known to not be very helpful for local specific except for major geographic areas.
And given that, also consider including some next-larger geographic area phrases. Here in my area, local could be "keyword + Sausalito" (the town) or "keyword + Marin" (the county), or "keyword + bay area" (the region) or "keyword + North Bay" (a slice of the region).
In some cases none of these show in keyword tools, in other cases, some do, and in some cases they all do.
Another factor to consider from this regard is the specific business. If it's an overnight multi-day pet-sitting service (for vacationers), their customers might be willing to drive a bit more for better service. If it's a car detailing service, not so much.
-
It depends on the keyword you want to target. Check the local search volume in the Google Keyword Tool, and target that term. Make sure the site is set in Webmaster tools to be targeted locally. It is no different from any other keyword.

Better link building is hardest to achieve in 2014
In a simple words. My site has good quality content not copies 100% original. Have good social points more then 500 or twitter, fb, g+ (200) and now what to do with ranking. should i start linking, but where, please don't refer me any-page. As my thinking all old link building method are now died, like comment, rss, classifieds, footer links, directories. etc At this time i am thinking the powerful link building is hard to achieve in whole process of seo. Now any one tell me where do i start, linking to my site .....? (I also research on competitors but there links are all from contextual and linking domain sites DA is more then 70, and i can't even able to get one link by scraping more then 200 sites.) Thanks .

Sort of lost my way - Links, SEO
Not sure where to start with this so please bare with me. I do the SEO for our company website (we're a small family business), I'm not an SEO'er by profession (I'm a carpenter/joiner) but been doing our site for ten or so years. About 12 months ago sort of let go of work & web things a bit due to very sudden family bereavement which kind of hit me hard. So when I did get back into doing bits on our site I probably then concentrated a little bit too much on content building rather than going after links etc. As a result we've dropped in the SERPS a bit, but having said that still just about clinging within the top ten for our terms. Since I've started again we've had Panda/Penguin and I'm a little unsure how to go about getting links in, most of my competitors are using things like blog commenting (just random blogs that are do follow) , recip linking (any sites as long as they give a link!) etc basically things that long term will hold no value long term (or possibly none even to begin with). All this brand stuff leaves me at a loss, we're a small family business as our the majority of our competitors so not 100% sure that the branding stuff I'm reading about is relevant? As I say I've got some pretty decent content, some of which I am trying to push with mixed results – we're not in a very sexy niche so not much chance of it picking up links naturally! Another thing I am noticing is in my niche I don't think any SEO companies are involved with my competitors, most of our competitors are ranking their home pages for every single related search term, whilst I've have always tried to create a page for each search term and I have these pages ranking. For example my main search term, lets say 'wooden doors' I rank an internal page for this term whilst everyone else seems to rank homepages. I'm finding it hard to get new links into this page, so one idea I do have is elsewhere on my site I have a guide to fitting the doors (with videos, pictures and text) so what I'm thinking is place this guide on my 'wooden doors' page making it a bit more linkable (it's fairly new and not yet gained any links, so no loss to move it) and would also mean a variation of anchor text. A good idea do you think? Some of my other content has been linked to by colleges in the UK, unfortunately all the links are behind moodle log-ins (give me a decent link you leeches! Lol) ! I am thinking of getting in touch with other colleges to see if the content would be useful, but actually getting hold of the person responsible for the subject is proving difficult! I've also done a bit of guest blogging, however I'm torn between writing decent stuff for our blog or giving it away (I wouldn't like to give something away thats poor, ok or doesn’t make sense) to other blogs. Sorry for the ramble (if you've made it this far then thanks for reading!)! Would appreciate all advice. Ultimately would love to get an SEO'er involved but looking around the good un's are out of our price range so I may seek some training as it may prove more beneficial.

How much should a link building program cost?
Hi All, I am relatively new to the world of SEO but it is vital to our business that we improve in this area. I believe our site architecture is good although we have a new site coming in the next few weeks which is effectively a re-skinning of the existing one that makes the user experience more relevant. What I would like to know is how much a link building program shoudl cost from an SEO provider and how they quantify what they charge - is there some kind of indicative cost per link or is it just "give us some money and we will do our best?" We have started writing daily articles on our news site and our natural listings are already pretty good. What I am looking to achieve is top three status for the London area (where we work) accross a broad range of keywords. I know this is what everyone wants but we are already front page and top 3 for many keywords and the back link building would appear to be where we are weaker compared to some of our competitors. Thanks James www.morganpryce.co.uk
