Duplicate content question...
-
I have a high duplicate content issue on my website. However, I'm not sure how to handle or fix this issue. I have 2 different URLs landing to the same page content. http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/vegan/ and http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/raw-food/ .In this situation, I cannot redirect one URL to the other since in the future I will probably be adding additional posts to either the "vegan" tag or the "raw food tag". What is the solution in this case?
Thank you

I think Chris had it right in the first response. Use canonical tags on any duplicate content posts pointing to the one version you want to be the canonical version (so the canonical tag on both version needs to have the same canonical URL). You don't have to use canonical tags on the unique pages, but you can if you want to. Just set the canonical URL to the URL of that post.
The tags pages themselves don't matter. Don't worry about them. They won't cause you any issues. It's the posts you need to be thinking about. You also don't need to de-index anything. The canonical tags on the post pages will fix the issue and you don't have to do anything about the tags page.

Tag archives shouldn't be canonicalized because the hope is that you would be adding more content to both over time that would negate the relevancy of the canonical. Most people seem to NoIndex their tag archives... which is a fine solution considering Tag Archives have negligible benefits in Search. You could keep them indexed if you would prefer and the duplicate content issue will be solved once you add more content to each. Also, keep in mind that Matt Cutts, in a recent video, said that duplicate content will not penalize you if it is non-spammy... it just won't rank well (or at all) while duplicate.

Hi,
Since you are planning on adding other articles to each tag I don't think canonical is the best way to go since they are not (or are not going to be) true duplicate content. The main problem is the use of tags which usually produce pages with content which is available elsewhere on the site and as such do not have anything really unique about them (except for the tag). No-indexing is one solution, check out these discussions for more details and some related links.

Even better, just no-index your tag pages.
Depending on what CMS your using (wordpress?) it wont be easy implementing a rel=canonical tag on a tag page
Its general practice to no-index category and tag pages to avoid duplicate issues.

Hello,
rel=canonical will fix this - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139394?hl=en
What it does is tell Google "this page is a duplicate" then Google will only index one page. So in the head you would put the tag pointing to the page you want ranked.
Matt Cutts has said “I wouldn’t stress about this unless the content that you have duplicated is spammy or keyword stuffing.”
So once you've done the canonical I wouldn't stress a great deal about the duplicate content (though I still recommend implementing the rel=canonical tag when possible)
Hope that helps a bit.
Good luck!

Duplicate content : domain alias issue
Hello there ! Let's say my client has 2 webshops (that exists since long time, so many backlinks & good authority on both) : individuals.nl : for individuals (has 200 backlinks, let's say) pros.nl : exact same products, exact same content, but with a different branding intended to professionnals (has 100 backlinks, let's say) So, both websites are 99% identical and it has to remain like that !!! Obviously, this creates duplicate content issues. Goal : I want "individuals.nl" to get all ranking value (while "pros.nl" should remain accessible through direct access & appear on it's own brand queries). Solution ? Implement canonical tags on "pros**.nl**" that goes to "individuals.nl". That way, "individuals.nl" will get all ranking value, while "pros.nl" will still be reachable through direct access. However, "individuals.nl" will then replace "pros.nl" from SERP in the long-term. The only thing I want is to keep "pros.nl" visible for its own brand queries -> it won't be possible through organic search result, so, I'm just gonna buy those "pros" queries through paid search ! Put links on all pages of pros.nl to individuals.nl (but not the other way around), so that "pros.nl" will pass some ranking value to "individuals.nl" (but only a small part of the ranking value -> ideally, I would like to pass all link value to this domain). Could someone advise me ??? (I know it sound a bit complicated... but I don't have much choice ^^)

Do mobile and desktop sites that pull content from the same source count as duplicate content?
We are about to launch a mobile site that pulls content from the same CMS, including metadata. They both have different top-level domains, however (www.abcd.com and www.m.abcd.com). How will this affect us in terms of search engine ranking?

WordPress Duplicate Content Caused By Categories
Hello, We have a wordpress blog that has around 250 categories. Due to our platform we have a hierarchy structure for 3 separate stores. For example iPhone > Apps > Books. Placing a blog post in the books category automatically places it into iPhone and iPhone/Apps category, causing 3 instances of any blog post in this category. Is this an issue? I have seen 2 schools of thought on categories, 1 index follow and 2 noindex follow. I know some of our categories get indexed, but with so many, maybe it is better to noindex them. We also considered reducing our categories to 10 to 12 and use tags to provide the indexed site navigation as follows: Reviews (category) iPhone Book App, iPhone App Store (tags) but this seems a little redundant? Anyone want to take this on? thank you Mike

Duplicate Page Content for sorted archives?
Experienced backend dev, but SEO newbie here 🙂 When SEOmoz crawls my site, I get notified of DPC errors on some list/archive sorted pages (appending ?sort=X to the url). The pages all have rel=canonical to the archive home. Some of the pages are shorter (have only one or two entries). Is there a way to resolve this error? Perhaps add rel=nofollow to the sorting menu? Or perhaps find a method that utilizes a non-link navigation method to sort / switch sorted pages? No issues with duplicate content are showing up on google webmaster tools. Thanks for your help!

Taking descriptions from Manufacturer sites and Duplicate content
We are doing some inventory improvements eg new photographs from various angles, etc. We are also writing descriptions for each product.. As one of our suppliers has perfect desriptions on their site what is the theory on how duplicate content will affect our ranking for these products if we copy and paste? Also if we change the descriptions, just how different do they need to be? Thanks

Fixing Duplicate Pages Titles/Content
I have a DNN site, which I created friendly URL's for; however, the creation of the friendly URL's then created duplicate page content and titles. I was able to fix all but two URL's with rel="canonical" links. BUT The two that are giving me the most issues are pointing to my homepage. When I added the rel = "canonical" link the page then becomes not indexable. And for whatever reason, I can't add a 301 redirect to the homepage because it then gives me "can't display webpage" error message. I am new to SEO and to DNN, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Duplicate Content - Just how killer is it?
Yesterday I received my ranking report and was extremely disappointed that my high-priority pages dropped in rank for a second week in a row for my targeted keywords. This is after running them through the gradecard and getting As for each of them on the keywords I wanted. I looked at my google webmaster tools and saw new duplicate content pages listed, which were the ones I had just modified to get my keyword targeting better. In my hastiness to work on getting the keyword usage up, I neglected to prevent these descriptions from coming up when viewing the page with filter parameters, sort parameters and page parameters... so google saw these descriptions as duplicate content (since myurl.html and myurl.html?filter=blah are seen as different). So my question: is this the likely culprit for some pretty drastic hits to ranking? I've fixed this now, but are there any ways to prevent this in the future? (I know _of _canonical tags, but have never used them, and am not sure if this applies in this situation) Thanks! EDIT: One thing I forgot to ask as well: has anyone inflicted this upon themselves? And how long did it take you to recover?

Large Scale Ecommerce. How To Deal With Duplicate Content
Hi, One of our clients has a store with over 30,000 indexed pages but less then 10,000 individual products and make a few hundred static pages. Ive crawled the site in Xenu (it took 12 hours!) and found it to by a complex mess caused by years of hack add ons which has caused duplicate pages, and weird dynamic parameters being indexed The inbound link structure is diversified over duplicate pages, PDFS, images so I need to be careful in treating everything correctly. I can likely identify & segment blocks of 'thousands' of URLs and parameters which need to be blocked, Im just not entirely sure the best method. Dynamic Parameters I can see the option in GWT to block these - is it that simple? (do I need to ensure they are deinxeded and 301d? Duplicate Pages Would the best approach be to mass 301 these pages and then apply a no-index tag and wait for it to be crawled? Thanks for your help.
