90% Traffic Drop...
-
Hey Moz Community
Our team has been racking our collective brains about a 90% drop in traffic a niche client of ours has seen. The traffic drop occurred September 20th. The site averages 300-400 unique visits a month (very targeted & niche) & dropped to 30-40 uvm.
The domain is on an exact match but other then that I can't see anything that would be deserving of such a significant drop in traffic. Our campaign had been performing very well & we were seeing steady gains in traffic & ranking over the long term until September 20th.
I'm curious if the exact match update would have such a big impact months after it was released (July/July if I remember correctly). I also didn't think it could be such a big issue because that domain has been used by us for a couple years.
Is the Exact Domain Match such a big deal?

Nice - I didn't consider an issue with reporting.
-
We've never checked the server logs but I'm going to put in a request for that. Analytics hasn't been touched & we've checked to ensure it's correctly installed.
Unfortunately the client has seen a drop in leads & sales.
-
Again great thoughts & questions. We have a few years worth of analytics & the vertical type is bankruptcy (chapter 11). There is seasonality but not at this particular time of year & we've never seen a drop that was this significant.
From a ranking standpoint we'd never actually gotten to page one but we'd seen a very steady climb & traffic was starting from zero when the site was launched. So there was no rank drop per but we weren't on page one.
No other marketing at the time & certainly nothing that could have impacted traffic.
We've started to see a very slow increase in traffic so we'll monitor it closely & continue to do the best work we can.

Was there any work done to the site on that date? Could GA code have not been put on some of the pages? Could there have been duplicate codes that had been inflating the numbers that were removed? Do you have access to awstats or some other form of server log files to check for a corresponding drop there? Have your leads and sales changed?
Just want to narrow down that we are looking at a traffic drop and not a reporting issue.

I would check Google Trends for a possible drop in search volume for your targeted terms. I am not sure how long you have had this site up and running but you may just have hit a seasonality drop (we see this with hotels) and you may simply need to wait it out. You may consider deepening your 'bucket' of phrases if there are relevant terms for which you are not targeting that may still be receiving some decent search volume.
Because you have not dropped in ranking for the specific term I am confident in saying this has nothing to do with your exact match domain - any penalty would have been to your rankings which would have effected traffic but Google can not cut out the middle man - they can't keep you where you are in the rankings but still control your traffic amount.
Hmmmm - that makes me wonder - have you narrowed the traffic loss down to search engines? Were you perhaps running some other type of marketing that may have been driving direct or referral traffic that you have stopped?
-
Good question, no there hasn't been a drop for the exact match keyword specifically. It may be important to note that we've focussed on a bucket of 25-30 phrases that are similar & relevant.
I've been insisting the same thing as you mention here, the exact match doesn't give you the boost it once did but I've never seen a "penalty". This is where I believe that Google is letting us down, without a penalty it becomes incredibly difficult to see an issue.
-
Is there any correlation with ranking drop for the exact match keyword (or any other keywords for that matter)? I know that exact match domains may not get the boost they used to but I certainly don't recall seeing any penalties.

How to avoid adult traffic to site?
A client of ours is increasingly getting a lot of adult traffic to their site, where they show up only for adult searches and not at all for relevant searches. How can we stop Google associating their site with adult content? Here's a blog example, giving advice to parents on girls and body image issues: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/girls-and-body-image keywords driving traffic to this page are all around images for 'young nude girls' etc.

A specific keyword has dropped from #1 in Google to nowhere at all...
Hi guys, I hope you can help. We have a large ecommerce website which has different domains for each language - GB, USA, DE, AU & CA. I've been working my way through the errors that have been flagged in Moz and today I noticed something quite worrying. One of our strong keywords has dropped from 1st place to nowhere at all. However, the Canadian version is ranking in the UK desktop search and our mobile site is appearing in the desktop search too. The keyword is 'personalised macbook cover' and the page in question is https://www.mrnutcase.com/en-GB/personalised-macbook-cover/ I'm confused as this page was ranking brilliantly a couple of weeks ago and now it's nowhere to be seen. We've added alternate and canonical tags to distinguish which site is mobile and which site is desktop. We've also submitted a sitemap so that it takes into account all of the languages. There are no harmful links and we've changed the content of the page across each language. I've attached what appears in the SERP's in the UK. (there is the mobile version ranking at the top and the Canadian version further down the page) Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Danny webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=personalised%20macbook%20covers

Traffic dropped suddenly
-In early January 2013, we had to switch servers after many years with the same one. We were highly ranked and getting about 8500 unique visitors per month. -We didn't notice the traffic falling because we were focussed on a major site redesign and addition that we launched in April 2013. Visits continued to fall, this time also because the company that launched it didn't double check their work and had some dead links etc. Those were all fixed by approximately June 2013.- early January 2014 we switched servers again because we were afraid the new server we moved to was perhaps ranked poorly or was possibly a spamming site before. Currently, nothing has changed. What was about 8500 unique visitors per month 18 months ago, is now about 1,000 and no leads are coming in at all.

Are sites that recently lost traffic considered bad neighborhood?
Hi, While searching for co-operations and guest blogging opportunities I found several sites that look legit and that lost all SE traffic (according to various tools such as SEMRush). By legit I mean sites that have PR3 and up. Have many solid looking articles and that the articles are on the site's subject and that the articles do not necessarily point to other sites with exact match anchors. Should I post in these sites or are they probably penalized and therefore being there put me at risk? Thanks

Dropped 50 places for Page Title Change
Hey Guys, I've got a keyword set that is really annoying me. You see on the 19th July I changed my page title for the home page to what I thought would be something more competitive and instead of climbing from rank 9/10 I dropped out of the top 50. So I waited 2 weeks to see if it changed and it just stayed out of the top 50. After two weeks I changed it back again and I've been out of the top 50 ever since. I havnt made any real significant changes to the site as I've held off waiting for the keyword ranking to return but I dont think it will. I was trying to improve the keyword phrase "bahamas all inclusive" for the website www.smallhope.com. I'd managed to get on to page 1 rank 9/10 depending. I changed the title; from "Bahamas All Inclusive - Andros Bahamas Hotel - Bahamas Vacation - Small Hope Bay Lodge All-Inclusive" to "Bahamas All Inclusive Vacation - Small Hope Bay Lodge All-Inclusive" This is really bad for us and I'm not sure what to do. I had a whole plan in place starting with the Title and moving on to the H1 tags, but now I'm not so sure. I've put everything on hold. If this was you what would you do to get back to page 1? Thanks, Adam
