How to make site pages appear higher than homepage
-
Hi, our site sells a mixture of clothes, for example jackets, hats, scarfs and gloves.
when somebody searches for 'hats in Chicago' our main website would appear.
How can we make it so that our webpage with our hats appears?
Thanks

If [hats in chicago] clicks are converting into sales you should be careful about playing with this in case you lose the ranking altogether. Saying that, individual product pages usually convert better than anything else so it may be best to concentrate on those instead of category pages. To rank a category page that lists the hats you have available there are a number of things you can do if you haven't already:
- If you don't want the homepage to rank, make sure you're not committing keyword cannibilisation
- Ensure your onpage SEO is spot-on for the hat page e.g. title tag with your keyword (and maybe a price/offer/incentive to encourage clicks, meta description to encourage clicks, descriptive image filenames and alt attributes, useful URL structure
- Onpage too - add some unique introductory text
- Show review data (such as AggregateRating) by each product and consider adding a small number of reviews to category pages - user generated content is good for getting unique content. I say a small number of reviews to avoid duplicate content issues
- Link to your most important category pages from every page on your website via a main menu
- Add breadcrumbs
- Make sure you have an HTML sitemap, and an XML sitemap submitted to the search engines - both listen all your pages

Hi Daniel. I struggle with the same issue on one of my ecommerce websites, while my other site doesn't have that problem (the subpages always appear ahead of the home). I don't know why. Hopefully one of the smart Moz Members will have some ideas...
I only have general clues on how to get the product pages to rank above the home page, like: 1) get some links pointing to the product pages. 2) get more descriptive text content on the product pages. 3) Have great meta titles and descriptions on the product pages. 4) Include social media functions (such as Like, Tweet, and G+) available on the product pages.
I have set Priorities in my XML sitemap to declare the main product pages as being higher that average priority, and the homepage as being lower than average. From what I read it doesn't appear that Google uses these Priority declarations very much or at all, but it's easy to do and does not appear to hurt anything. You can read a little more about Priority at the bottom of this page: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/183668?hl=en
Good luck!

How to have MOZ site crawl pre-launch
Hi, Our new website is about to launch. We would love to have moz.com SITE CRAWL our site before launch. For issues like "missing meta description" and everything else that moz.com checks. We would love to do it before we launch. The new site is currently on a different domain than our live site. example.com <-- this is our live site. new-site.com <-- this is our "staging" server with the new site. We have a long running campaign for example.com Do we need to create a new campain for new-site.com ? Or is there some other simpler way? When we launch we will switch the site from new-site.com to example.com .. example.com will be the address for the new site.. Any ideas or suggestions? best practices? edit Forgot to say thank you for your help and input 🙂

Hey folks, in our page crawl errors we are getting 1000's (literally) of missing description errors on our search page - see attached image for what I mean. I have no idea how these are being generated as crawled links? Any help would be appreciated as it would really clean up our errors! qAzah

My site is not being fully crawled
Our site has been crawled several times by RogerBot but each time only 6 pages are crawled even though we have more than 100 pages. Do I need to submit my sitemap.xml to Moz?

Before making improvements, I need to collate the most relevant custom report to snapshot our current website quality.
I've just started at a company and before I start working on content and SEO improvements I need to assess 'where are we now' . The idea being after 3-6 months I can repeat the report to show improvements. Moz has an enormous range of powerful analysis tools - which should I combine into a Custom Report to create a snapshot of current website quality? Thanks

On-page grader
Hi, Is there a facility to upload a spreadsheet? I have a LOT of pages to grade and it's taking a very long time. Can you make this possible in some future update if it isn't currently available? Thanks, Amelia

How does MOZ assign a keyword to a page in the On Page Grades by Keyword Ranking
I'm in the beta analytics tool. In the On Page Optimization > On Page Grades by Keyword section, there is a Keyword column with a keyword assigned to each URL on my site. http://analytics.moz.com/search/on-page/572409.326269 How is the keyword that is shown here decieed upon? Is it simply based on a guess of the "best keyword" for each page based on kwp density and other factors? Can I map a new keyword to each page? or at least to my top ten most important pages? I see I can check the grade for any keyword on any page here: http://analytics.moz.com/search/manage-page-grades/572409.326269. I want to map my top ten pages to ten keywords - can I save these changes in the system so I don't have to manually check a keyword/url match each time? Shaun
